**Day Three: The Rusted Anvil**

The tavern sat on a side street in the merchant district, its sign depicting a blacksmith’s hammer striking a cracked anvil. The Guild affiliation was subtle. A small silver gear etched into the doorframe, visible only to those who knew what to look for.

Elder Healer Morrain Ashby arrived at 7 PM. He walked slowly, leaning on a cane carved from some pale wood that hummed faintly with Restoration energy. Seventy-eight years old. Level 49. C-Rank Restoration. He had been healing people for longer than Alvian had been alive.

Serah met him at a corner table. The tavern’s noise provided cover, but Ashby didn’t seem concerned about being overheard. He sat down with the careful movements of a man whose joints had been complaining for decades.

”I’ve watched the footage,” he said. His voice was soft. Worn. ”Your partner healing patients I couldn’t help. Students with dimensional displacement. Delvers with chronic scarring. The girl with the crystallized eye.”

”Her name is Lina.”

”Lina. Yes. I’ve been a healer for fifty-three years. I’ve watched people die of injuries I couldn’t treat. I’ve held hands and said ’I’m sorry, there’s nothing more I can do’ more times than I can count.” His voice cracked. ”If your man can do what I couldn’t...” He stopped. Started again. ”Let me help. Let my Guild help. We have infrastructure, personnel, centuries of medical knowledge. We can’t build the array. But we can staff it.”

Serah studied him. Through the communication crystal, Alvian studied him too. Ashby wasn’t performing. His eyes were wet. His hands trembled around the cane. This was a man who had spent his entire life fighting a losing battle against injury and death, and someone had just told him the battle could be won.

’He’s not negotiating. He’s begging. But he’s begging for his patients, not himself. That’s the difference between a healer and a politician. Thorn wanted political advantage. Vex wanted technical knowledge. Ashby wants to help people. That makes him the most dangerous ally of the three.’

’A man who serves a cause is harder to corrupt than a man who serves himself. He’ll betray you only if you betray the cause first.’

”The Healer’s Assembly would staff the arrays,” Serah said. ”Operate them. Maintain them. Under our technical direction.”

”Under your direction. Yes. Whatever you need.” Ashby leaned forward. ”I’ve trained four hundred healers in my career. Every one of them chose this path because they wanted to help. They’ve spent years watching people suffer because our tools weren’t good enough. Your partner just gave us better tools. Let us use them.”

[Diplomatic engagement: Healer’s Assembly]

[Duration: 19 minutes]

[Outcome: Agreement reached]

[Terms: Operational partnership, Staff provision, Technical subordination]

[Assessment: Ashby is genuine. His motivation is service, not politics. The Healer’s Assembly will be the most loyal ally of the three Guilds.]

’Three Guilds. Three agreements. Three different motivations. Thorn wants to break the Magistrate system. Vex wants to understand pre-Cataclysm technology. Ashby wants to heal people. Different needs, same conclusion. They all need me more than they need the Crown.’

The meetings ended. Serah returned to the Undercity with three agreements and three communication crystals, one for each Guild leader. The political alliance was taking shape.

Alvian sat in Tobias’s hut and reviewed the week’s intelligence. Three Guilds aligned. The Crown’s enforcement apparatus was about to lose its foundation. The bounty that had hung over him since the Magnus Estate raid was about to become the most expensive dead letter in the kingdom’s history.

’Three faces in the crowd. Three different people with three different reasons to stand with me. The old Alvian would have fought them all. The new Alvian knows that allies are just enemies you haven’t finished negotiating with yet.’

’Or maybe that’s too cynical. Maybe some people are exactly what they seem. Thorn is angry. Vex is curious. Ashby is kind. Three human emotions, driving three political decisions that will change everything.’

[DING!]

[All three diplomatic engagements complete]

[Alliance framework established:]

[1. Delver’s Consortium: Tribunal support, Warrens access]

[2. Artificer’s Circle: Tech documentation, Infrastructure support]

[3. Healer’s Assembly: Operational partnership, Staff provision]

[Combined Guild combat assets: ~2,400 Awakened]

[Combined Guild political weight: 3 of 7 Guilds]

[Assessment: Alliance viable. Political window remains narrow.]

[Recommendation: Move to public declaration before Crown counter-response.]

’Public declaration. The next step. The Guilds go public with their withdrawal of cooperation. The Crown’s bounty dies not with a bang but with a shrug. And the kingdom’s political landscape shifts permanently.’

’Tomorrow.’

---

The statement hit every extranet feed at 9 AM.

Alvian watched it through the communication crystal network, sitting in Tobias’s hut with Serah and Hendricks Cole. The old scavenger’s mechanical arm hummed with what might have been anticipation. The black market dealer’s cybernetic eye tracked the feed’s reception metrics in real time.

The three Guildmasters stood together at the Guildhall’s public entrance. The image was deliberate. Three people, three Guild uniforms, three raised platforms. Thorn in her delver’s leathers. Vex in his artificer’s coat. Ashby in his healer’s robes. The visual said unity without a single word being spoken.

Then Thorn spoke.

”On behalf of the Delver’s Consortium, the Artificer’s Circle, and the Healer’s Assembly, we formally withdraw cooperation from the Crown’s pursuit of the individual known as Alvian Vance.”

The feed’s comment section exploded. Alvian’s INT 215 couldn’t process the flood fast enough, but he caught the dominant themes. Shock. Approval. Fear. Hope. The usual chaos of public opinion encountering unexpected change.

Thorn continued. ”This withdrawal is motivated by overwhelming evidence of public benefit. The individual in question has healed two hundred and thirty-one patients, including members of all three Guilds, using technologies that address dimensional injuries no existing medical framework can treat.”

Vex stepped forward. ”Furthermore, the Crown’s pursuit of this individual occurs despite documented corruption in the Magistrate system. The Bloodhound assassination contract, bearing Guild Magistrate Hollis Thorne’s notary seal and approved by Chief Magistrate Aldric Wren, represents a systematic failure of judicial oversight. The Crown’s refusal to address this corruption compromises the legitimacy of its enforcement actions.”

Ashby’s voice was softer but carried further. ”The Healer’s Assembly has spent three centuries treating injuries we could not cure. The healing array technology developed by this individual represents the first genuine advancement in dimensional medicine since the Cataclysm. To pursue, arrest, or harm the creator of this technology would constitute an act of harm against every patient who could benefit from it. We will not participate in such harm.”

The statement ended. No questions taken. The three Guildmasters returned inside the Guildhall.

The feed went silent for three seconds. Then the analysis began.

[Political event detected]

[Three Guilds publicly withdraw cooperation from Crown]

[Statement cites: Public benefit, Magistrate corruption, Medical advancement]

[Assessment: Crown enforcement apparatus compromised]

Hendricks whistled. The sound was low and appreciative. ”Clean. No threats. No ultimatums. Just facts and withdrawal. The Crown can’t frame this as rebellion because it isn’t rebellion. It’s three Guilds choosing not to participate.”

’That’s the genius of it. They’re not attacking the Crown. They’re just stepping away. The Delver’s Consortium controls Warrens access. Without their cooperation, Royal Guards can’t safely enter the deep tunnels. The Artificer’s Circle maintains the capital’s magitech infrastructure. Their withdrawal means the Crown’s surveillance systems degrade within weeks. The Healer’s Assembly runs the city’s hospitals. Defying them means alienating every medical professional in the kingdom.’

’Three withdrawals. Three pillars removed. The Crown’s enforcement capability doesn’t collapse. It evaporates.’

---

The Crown’s response came six hours later.

Alvian monitored through the communication network as the political fallout spread. The four Crown-loyal Guilds didn’t break ranks. They couldn’t afford to, politically or economically. But they also didn’t move to enforce the bounty. Their official statements were carefully neutral. ”Acknowledging the concerns raised by fellow Guilds.” ”Encouraging dialogue between Crown and Guild leadership.” ”Affirming commitment to rule of law while recognizing legitimate institutional interests.”

The translation was simple. The Crown-loyal Guilds were waiting. They wouldn’t help the Crown pursue Alvian, but they wouldn’t actively oppose the Crown either. They were hedging their bets, maintaining position until the political winds settled enough to reveal which side would win.

’Neutrality. Not loyalty. Neutrality. The Crown thinks it has four Guilds on its side. It has four Guilds on the fence. And four Guilds on the fence is worse than zero Guilds on your side, because fence-sitters can fall either direction.’

Helen Croft’s security drones captured the Crown’s internal response. King Alistair summoned his council to a closed session at 3 PM. The meeting lasted four hours. No official statement was released.

But Hendricks had sources. A servant in the palace, paid through the Undercity network, reported what she heard through the throne room’s ventilation system. The King’s words, filtered through ducts and secondhand retelling, came to Alvian in fragments.
