Chapter 247: So Many ’Heaven-shattering Thunders’

Yes, Ye Xing was just messing with Ouyang Xu. At the very least, he could get a verbal jab in. Pissing Ouyang Xu off was always a good thing. The conflict between them had already become irreconcilable.

Ouyang Xu wanted to seize Ye Xing’s treasure, and there was no way Ye Xing would obediently hand over such a massive fortune.

In truth, if it could prevent this war, Ye Xing would have considered giving Ouyang Xu ten or even thirty percent of his treasure. But Ouyang Xu was outrageously greedy, demanding to take ninety percent of Ye Xing’s treasure for himself.

The reason Ouyang Xu dared to make such an outrageous demand was that he was confident his strength was more than enough to crush Ye Xing. If not for the fact that White Cloud City was so grand and imposing, making it somewhat difficult to conquer, he wouldn’t have even been willing to leave Ye Xing ten percent. He would have just taken it all.

Since the conflict couldn’t be resolved, the two sides could only settle it through war.

”All troops, attack the city! After the walls fall, you may slaughter and plunder at will!”

Ouyang Xu’s gaze was incomparably frigid, his tone like winter ice. With his command, the war drums began to thunder.

THUMP! THUMP THUMP THUMP!

THUMP THUMP THUMP!

Along with the heaven-shaking drums, the war machine began to turn. Squad after squad of soldiers—some carrying siege ladders, others pushing battering rams—advanced with Weapons in hand, their killing intent surging as the massive army pressed forward.

”Kill!” ”Charge!” ”Kill!”

”The Grand General has decreed: The first to enter the city will be rewarded with A Thousand Gold Coins!”

”Kill!” ”Charge!”

The cries of battle echoed across the plains. Ouyang Xu’s personal forces truly lived up to their name as battle-hardened elites. They were incredibly swift. Pairs of soldiers shouldered long siege ladders, protected by shield bearers. Each one was well-trained, running like the wind as they rapidly closed in on White Cloud City’s walls.

Under the power of a dozen or so soldiers, the heavy battering ram also began its slow advance toward the city gate.

The drums thundered like lightning, and killing intent shook the heavens.

The morale of Ouyang Xu’s troops was sky-high, their will to fight soaring and unstoppable. In contrast, many of the defenders on White Cloud City’s walls, on Ye Xing’s side, were pale with fright. They were incredibly tense, their palms slick with cold sweat. After all, most of these guards were just hired hands from the martial world. This was their first time fighting an army. Moreover, the soldiers in this army were also Martial Artists, and their individual strength was not even weaker than their own. They were also well-trained and coordinated seamlessly. The killing intent, forged from countless battles amid blood and bones, was truly terrifying. If their Gang Leader weren’t personally overseeing the defense from the gate tower, some guards might have already thought of fleeing.

On one side were over ten thousand battle-hardened elites; on the other, a mere two to three thousand men from a disorderly mob.

”Grey Eagle, how long do you think it will take us to breach the city?” Ouyang Xu asked, his gaze fixed on the battlefield before him.

”At most, three days. At the soonest, three shichen—perhaps not even that long!” the old man in grey replied loudly after comparing the two forces.

”Mm,” Ouyang Xu nodded and mused, ”From what I can see, those guards on the walls are just a disorderly mob. I doubt they’ve ever even been on a battlefield. Under the pressure of my army’s killing intent, they’ll likely be scared out of their wits and rout completely!”

Ouyang Xu was clearly very confident in his soldiers, all of whom he had personally trained. Many of them had fought in major wars against neighboring countries and were elites who had survived those great battles.

The battlefield is the ultimate crucible. It is a place of blood and corpses, a struggle on the edge of death where it’s either kill or be killed. For those who crawl out of the piles of the dead, the weak have all been eliminated. The soldiers who survive possess immense Willpower and killing intent. That is what makes them elites!

Three hundred elites could defeat three thousand rabble. What’s more, he had ten thousand elites. From Ouyang Xu’s perspective, victory was certain; it was only a matter of how much time it would take.

However, just as Ouyang Xu’s voice fell—

At that very moment, a series of roars suddenly erupted from the front lines.

BOOM! RUMBLE!

RUMBLE!

The sound shook the heavens, accompanied by waves of horrifying screams that completely drowned out the war drums.

Ouyang Xu’s expression changed drastically. He quickly looked ahead, only to see explosions everywhere below the city wall. His so-called elites were being blown to bits, with flesh and blood flying in every direction.

Thick gunpowder smoke drifted over on the cold wind, mixed with the acrid, overwhelming stench of blood.

”Damn it! It’s Heaven-shattering Thunder!” Ouyang Xu’s face was ashen. His five fingers formed a claw, and with a sudden exertion of force—CRACK!—the wooden armrest of his chair was crushed into splinters.

”Calm your anger, General. The Tang Sect’s Heaven-shattering Thunders are incredibly precious. They can’t have many—probably just a few!” said Liu Liqun.

”Back on Biluo Mountain, that kid already used several Heaven-shattering Thunders. How does he still have more? Even with the master’s financial resources, we couldn’t buy many of a powerful weapon like the Heaven-shattering Thunder. How can that kid have so many?” The old man in grey frowned. ”Could it be that he’s already using the treasure to buy Heaven-shattering Thunders from the Tang Sect?”

”Impossible. The moment he got the treasure, we were hunting him day and night. He had neither the time nor the opportunity to use it.” Ouyang Xu’s expression was dark and uncertain as he said viciously, ”I’d like to see just how many Heaven-shattering Thunders he has! Don’t tell me he plans to use them for the entire war! Even if he has the money, there’s probably nowhere he could buy that many!”

The Heaven-shattering Thunder was a powerful Hidden Weapon developed by the Tang Sect. Its explosion could cause massive casualties among Postnatal Realm Martial Artists and even inflict near-fatal injuries on High-tier Martial Artists of the Ninth Realm. Even an Innate Realm expert could be wounded if caught off guard. Such a powerful Hidden Weapon was naturally not cheap, with each one valued at several thousand Gold Coins. Even with the financial resources of an Innate Realm expert, one couldn’t buy many. Of course, Innate Realm experts had no need to purchase them anyway. Typically, large clans would equip their younger members adventuring in the martial world with one or two Heaven-shattering Thunders as a life-saving measure.

The fact that White Cloud City could use over a dozen Heaven-shattering Thunders at once truly baffled Ouyang Xu. On a typical battlefield, even in clashes between major nations, Heaven-shattering Thunders were rarely used. They were simply too expensive to be deployed in large numbers. At most, a few might be used when the situation was just right.

Therefore, having a dozen or so Heaven-shattering Thunders was already incredible; Ouyang Xu was convinced they couldn’t possibly have any more. He was dead set on taking White Cloud City, even if it meant sacrificing his troops. In Ouyang Xu’s mind, Ye Xing surely had only a limited number of ’Heaven-shattering Thunders.’ Once they were used up, they were gone. Ten or twenty of them could, at most, injure a few hundred to a thousand of his men. And since his army numbered a full ten thousand, he could still conquer White Cloud City.

But, to his utter shock and fury, he was completely wrong.

The rumbling from the front lines was nearly incessant. The ’Heaven-shattering Thunders’ exploded one after another, blowing his army to smithereens. Flesh flew through the air, and horrifying screams echoed across the plains.

Up on the walls, the defenders of White Cloud City were having the time of their lives. Any fear they previously had of the enemy army had long since vanished into thin air.

”So the enemy army is nothing special after all!”

”Son of a bitch, their killing intent scared the hell out of me a minute ago! I’ll throw them! I’ll throw more! I’ll blow those motherfuckers to kingdom come!”

”My God, the weapons the Gang Leader gave us are insane!”

”Hahaha, I just accidentally shot and killed an enemy officer at the Qi Condensation Stage with my pistol! A day like this has finally come for me, Liu Ergou! This feels amazing!”

”These bastards wanted to massacre the city! Brothers, let’s kill these sons of bitches!”

All sorts of grenades and machine-gun bullets rained down from the city walls. The so-called elites on Ouyang Xu’s side, carrying their siege ladders, were often blown to smithereens—ladders and all—before they could even get close to the wall. As for the battering ram, it was even more ridiculous. After a tremendous effort, the cumbersome machine was finally pushed to the city gate. But before it could even strike, a bomb was dropped on it. The entire battering ram was blown to pieces, and its wooden wheels rolled off to who-knows-where.
