American Football: King of the Bay Area

After the snap, the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive linemen unexpectedly didn’t push forward to confront the Defense Line head-on. Instead, they methodically retreated, actively shrinking the pocket with Lu Ke at its center and luring the opposing defensive linemen to rush forward.

Chilo Rachal and Joe Stanley, positioned at either end of the line, were completely focused. They had noticed the opponent’s numbers advantage—seven versus five—so they had to hold their ground to buy Lu Ke as much time as possible to pass.

At this moment, Rachal’s mind was clearer than ever. His performance in this game and the last had been nothing short of a disaster. Opponents had repeatedly broken through his position, making him the clear weak link on the team’s Offense Line. But now, all distracting thoughts were gone. Lu Ke’s unwavering conviction was deeply ingrained in his mind.

The instant the ball was snapped, Rachal planted his hands on the chest of the man across from him, Akeem Jordan. Jordan was an inside linebacker, not a defensive lineman, and Rachal had a slight size advantage.

Rachal threw his full weight into an outward shove, then used the pushback to quickly retreat. He paid no mind to Jordan’s next move; his gaze immediately locked onto Cullen Jenkins to his left, who was waiting for an opportunity to rush the passer.

’Damn you, Jenkins!’

Rachal backpedaled with quick, choppy steps, his body leaning slightly left as he edged outward, positioning himself in the path of Jenkins’s looping rush. He then slammed his left shoulder hard into the lineman. In the middle of his retreat, Rachal suddenly planted his feet and drove forward, catching Jenkins by surprise with a head-on collision. The impact threw Jenkins off balance, causing him to stagger back a couple of steps, his charge completely halted.

But Rachal didn’t let up. In his peripheral vision, he saw Marcus Lynch moving in to provide support on his right. Lynch was already tied up with Jordan, who had been a step too slow. Rachal didn’t risk moving forward to help. Instead, he took two steps back, planting himself squarely in the path Jordan and Jenkins would need to take to sack Lu Ke, completely sealing off the blind side of the pocket.

Just then, Rachal noticed the arc of the football sailing through the sky. ’Lu Ke had thrown the pass!’

Realizing this, Rachal dug in his heels. He then unleashed everything he had, crashing violently into Jenkins, who was rallying for another charge. All his pent-up intensity from the game was released in one cathartic explosion!

...

”Hut!”

Lu Ke and Lynch, standing side-by-side, switched places. Lynch took a step forward into Lu Ke’s original spot while Lu Ke slipped behind him. He then immediately began to backpedal—one large step, then another—creating distance from the pocket as his eyes scanned the entire field.

Facing the Philadelphia Eagles’ seven-man blitz, the San Francisco 49ers countered by retreating. The shrinking pocket forced the Eagles to make an adjustment:

either continue the rush, but since they were a step behind, their own momentum would put them off-balance and at a disadvantage. Or, they could all drop back to defend against short and medium passes. If they didn’t, the gap between their defensive line and secondary, which the San Francisco 49ers had intentionally created, would become a natural throwing lane.

In the heat of the moment, the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense had no time to think. They could only react on instinct and continue to charge aggressively forward.

However, the blind side, which had been inconsistent all day, suddenly held strong, catching the Eagles’ defense completely off guard. After swapping places with Lu Ke, Marcus Lynch stayed put, joining the Offense Line. Fresh and waiting, he further stifled the momentum of the defensive rush.

One second, two seconds, three seconds.

The pocket looked like it was on the verge of collapse, fraught with danger, yet it held firm, refusing to break and giving Lu Ke plenty of time to survey the field.

Lu Ke finished his two-step drop without the slightest hesitation. Just before the edges of the pocket could collapse, he snapped his forearm forward. With a flick of his wrist, he sent the football carving a high, fast arc through the air, like a bolt of lightning tearing through the vast blue sky.

”Oh my God! The San Francisco 49ers’ pocket is in trouble! Real trouble! It looks like it could collapse at any second and leave the quarterback completely exposed to the defense! Danger! He passes! He passes! The ball is out!”

Kirk’s commentary came in a rapid-fire burst, without even enough time to detail the tactical shifts from the San Francisco 49ers or the adjustments by the Philadelphia Eagles. In less than the blink of an eye, he saw Lu Ke release the pass, and his voice began to climb. ”The ball... is... away!” The last word soared so high that his voice cracked.

But Kirk paid it no mind, his eyes glued to the field. All his attention had been on the pocket, and he hadn’t even had time to watch the receivers’ routes. ”There’s no target! There’s no one on the field! My God, why did Lu Ke choose that throwing lane? The open space left of center—there aren’t any San Francisco 49ers players there! Why would Lu Ke throw to the left side?”

”Wait! Crabtree! Crabtree! And Newman! My God!” Teddy was the first to spot the two players appearing in the open space, exclaiming, ”When did they get there?”

On the left side of the field, the only receiver had been Ted Ginn Jr., but he was completely locked down by a cornerback and had no opening. Lu Ke had thrown the ball into a total vacuum. The Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive line and secondary were disconnected, leaving vast swathes of open turf. But there were no San Francisco 49ers receivers there, either.

But just then, Crabtree and Newman, two players who had lined up on the right, both cut inside. One running a shorter route and the other a deeper one, they came into view. The two heavy weapons were like tanks, RUMBLING into the undefended territory.

”Lu Ke’s pass! Lu Ke’s pass! It’s... caught! By Crabtree! Number fifteen, Crabtree, unbelievable! That was a twenty-seven-yard pass, and Crabtree made a small leap to secure the football perfectly! My God! He caught it! He caught it! What an absolutely brilliant pass! Incredible!”

Unable to contain his excitement, Kirk slammed his hand on the desk and let out a triumphant roar.

”Facing second-and-fifteen, the San Francisco 49ers ran an innovative new play! With the pocket collapsing and the pressure on, Lu Ke completed a precise twenty-seven-yard pass! Caught by Crabtree! Beautiful! Just beautifully done!” As Kirk was wrapping up, his voice suddenly hitched. ”Wait, the play isn’t over! Wait!”

”He broke free! Crabtree broke the tackle of two defensive players! My God, he shook off two players and he’s still going! Newman rushes forward to throw a block, taking out the safety coming in for support! He’s advancing; Crabtree is still advancing! This is insane, absolutely insane! Crabtree is pushing forward with unstoppable momentum!”

Kirk’s eyes were wide, glued to the field, his heart caught in his throat, but the commentary kept pouring out. ”He’s still going! Crabtree is still pushing forward! The Philadelphia Eagles’ number fifty-seven, Clayton, is falling back to defend! My goodness, Crabtree shrugs off Clayton’s tackle too! Hughes can’t catch him either! Nelson! Nelson finally makes the play! He completes the tackle and trips up Crabtree! My God! Oh, my God!”

It was one exclamation after another. His brain had completely lost the ability to think; he was just like a machine, capturing the action on the field and reflexively spitting it out, not even fully processing what was happening. Only after Crabtree was down on the ground did Kirk gradually come to his senses. He turned his head to look at Teddy sitting beside him, his eyes filled with astonishment.

”What did we just witness? Jesus Christ! What did we just witness!” Kirk exclaimed, still unable to believe what he had just seen with his own eyes.

”We just witnessed Crabtree go into Beast Mode, shrugging off three... uh, four tackles? No, I don’t remember how many. We need to see the replay,” Teddy said, also dumbfounded. He was so surprised that all he could do was grin absurdly, any other words failing him. ”Let’s take a look at the replay.”

After the snap, the San Francisco 49ers’ receivers ran a set of deceptive routes. Gene, positioned on the left, was responsible for drawing away the cornerback in man-to-man coverage. Williams, on the far right, occupied the other cornerback.

The two ”heavy weapons,” Newman and Crabtree, both charged forward. However, after running about five yards, Crabtree made a sharp ninety-degree cut inside toward the open middle of the field. Newman ran forward for about eight yards before making his own ninety-degree cut, following closely behind Crabtree.

What began as a formation heavily weighted to the right instantly shifted its focus to the left.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense was completely out-schemed. All seven of their linemen were forced to rush forward, while in the secondary, with the two cornerbacks occupied, only two safeties were left—

One was left in the short pass zone, unable to keep up with Crabtree’s sudden charge. The other remained in the Long Pass Area, attempting to cover Newman one-on-one. But because of Newman’s sudden stop, a gap of about ten yards opened up between them. The safety immediately tried to close in, but he was just too slow.

Lu Ke quickly released the pass. With no defenders anywhere near him, Crabtree easily plucked the football out of the air and kept advancing.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense fell into complete disarray. The cornerback who had been covering Gene and the safety assigned to Crabtree both converged to make the tackle. However, the two of them ended up colliding with each other. The tackle wasn’t secure, and Crabtree powerfully broke free, setting the stage for what happened next.

The big Wide Receiver went into Beast Mode, powerfully breaking through and carving a path through the defense!
