American Football: King of the Bay Area

The referee blew the whistle, signaling the end of the first half. The score on the board read ”7-0,” with the home team ahead. Lincoln Financial Field had transformed into an ocean of cheers. The home fans sang, shouted, and danced wildly. The surging sea of navy blue crested into roaring waves—a magnificent sight to behold.

”The first half is over, but why do I have this ’it’s finally over’ feeling?” In the Fox Television studio, Teddy said with a somewhat bitter, half-joking smile.

Kirk shrugged, showing his agreement. ”I can’t argue with that. With all the hype from fans and experts, everyone thought this would be a spectacular, hard-fought game. But the first half was honestly dull. Both teams played poorly, the whole rhythm was clumsy and disjointed, and they never managed to get anything going effectively.”

”Yes, that’s exactly how I feel,” Teddy said, nodding in agreement. ”The only score of the first half came midway through the second quarter. And in fact, that touchdown was also an accident.”

As Teddy spoke, the screen began replaying the only touchdown of the half. ”Michael Vick ran consecutive read-option plays, advancing the ball himself three times in a row. Then, all of a sudden, he handed off the football to running back LeSean McCoy. The Eagles’ number twenty-five found a gap and ran for fifty-four yards to complete the touchdown. That gave the home team a 7-0 lead at the end of the half.”

”Actually, that touchdown was a microcosm of the entire first half,” Kirk added. ”The Eagles advanced the ball sporadically with their running game. Under the chaos of Vick’s scrambling tactics, a moment of individual brilliance from McCoy managed to secure them the lead. Meanwhile, the 49ers relied on their passing game, which was equally inconsistent. Minor errors at critical moments resulted in them failing to score at all.”

”Does that mean both defense teams played well? You could say that, but you could also say they didn’t.” After saying this, Teddy chuckled to himself, unable to hold back a laugh. ”The 49ers’ pass defense was decent, but their run defense was abysmal. The Eagles were the complete opposite. Neither Defense Team could find its rhythm; they were severely imbalanced.”

”Teddy, with an explanation like that, any viewers who didn’t watch the first half are probably going to be completely lost,” Kirk said, taking on the responsibility of clarifying.

”In the first half, Michael Vick went six for fourteen passing, a completion rate not even reaching fifty percent, for just twenty-eight yards. In addition, Vick rushed for thirty-three yards, while McCoy ran for seventy-nine—of course, that fifty-four-yard touchdown run did most of the damage. Excluding that run, his individual rushing stats of twenty-five yards are still quite impressive.”

”Overall, the Philadelphia Eagles have completely relied on their running game to open things up today, advancing for a total of one hundred fifty-three yards in the first half. A number like that can’t be called outstanding. The San Francisco 49ers’ Defense Team still did a competent job. Their only misstep was that flash of individual brilliance from McCoy. But, just like Marshawn Lynch’s Beast Mode, some things are just impossible to defend against.”

And just like that, Kirk summarized the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense and the San Francisco 49ers’ defense.

Teddy nodded repeatedly in agreement, then guided the conversation to the next topic by posing a question from a viewer’s perspective. ”On the other hand, the San Francisco 49ers’ offense actually seemed to have the upper hand in the first half. So why are they behind on the scoreboard right now?”

”First, let’s look at the halftime stats. The San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback, Lu Ke, went thirteen for twenty-one, for ninety-eight yards and no interceptions. As for the running game, Kendall Hunter had twelve yards, Marcus Lynch had twenty-three, and Anthony Dixon had eight. At the end of the half, the 49ers had advanced a total of one hundred forty-one yards.”

Kirk once again led with the data. ”You can see that, if you exclude that one stunning run from McCoy, the San Francisco 49ers’ stats are better. In the first half, they had the advantage in first downs, number of times they crossed midfield, and overall control of the field. Especially in the passing game.”

As Kirk spoke, a highlight reel of Lu Ke’s first-half passes appeared on screen. ”We can compare two sets of numbers. In the first half, the 49ers’ number fourteen quarterback was sacked once, hit five times, and forced to hurry his throw five times. That adds up to a total of eleven times. So, how many times did number fourteen attempt a pass? Twenty-one!”

”In other words, for more than half of his pass attempts, number fourteen was throwing under pressure. At the same time, the 49ers’ receivers also had two dropped passes. And it was under these circumstances that he somehow managed to complete thirteen passes for ninety-eight yards. A performance like that is simply astounding!”

Watching the video replay, you can see that Lu Ke was incredibly composed in the pocket, showing no signs of being a rookie. He was patient in his observations, decisive with his throws, and accurate with his judgment. Even under pressure, he never gave up hope, carrying the entire 49ers team forward with his outstanding individual performance.

Reviewing the first half, Kirk’s words were exceedingly calm, but he couldn’t hide his excitement when talking about Lu Ke’s performance. Kirk never concealed his admiration and approval for the rookie quarterback, and today was no exception.

”In other words, the San Francisco 49ers consistently had the momentum, but their shortcomings at critical moments have left them trailing on the scoreboard, without even a single score. This isn’t just a gap in execution; it also reveals the youth of the entire team,” Kirk said in summary. ”You could say that throughout the entire first half, Lu Ke’s performance was undoubtedly the most stable.”

”I agree,” Teddy said, nodding. ”The question now is, when will the 49ers’ offense find its rhythm and convert that advantage into points?”

It wasn’t just the two commentators from Fox Television. At that moment, every other analyst in the commentary booth was also voicing their opinions, analyzing the first half from different angles and levels. Halftime was, conversely, their most active period.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the continent, Joe’s Bar was shrouded in a dead silence. The only sounds were the scattered clinks of beer mugs hitting the tabletops, fragmented noises that only accentuated the profound quiet.

Everyone stared up at the television screens, speechless. At that moment, Fox Television was live. After a commercial break, they cut back to the studio, and the director began playing a highlight reel from the first half—a montage of all the hits Lu Ke had taken.

All eleven instances of pressure were edited together, making the pocket feel like a warzone, fraught with danger. Forget patiently observing and preparing to throw; there wasn’t even a moment of peace. Even if Lu Ke’s release was fast—two seconds, two and a half seconds—his throws were still severely and uncontrollably affected in the collapsing pocket.

Squeezed again and again, hit again and again. And yet, amid the fierce waves, Lu Ke always managed to find a sliver of space, seize that sliver of hope, and get the football out at the last possible moment. Twenty-one pass attempts, eleven under pressure, resulting in thirteen completions.

Such stats were far too brilliant. His indomitable willpower was even more staggering.

In comparison, the performance of the Offense Line and the receivers wasn’t even in the same league. What was worse, their timing always seemed to be a quarter-beat slow. All the plays were called correctly, but their steps never landed on the right beat. As a result, the San Francisco 49ers’ offense looked like a spinning top dancing on a high wire—precarious and on the verge of collapse.

The game was almost unbearable to watch.

Just as the commentators said, Lu Ke was playing all by himself, but without effective support, he couldn’t carry the team alone. The fact that the score was only 7-0 at halftime was a blessing in disguise.

Chris Wilson finally couldn’t take it anymore. He slammed his beer mug down on the bar with a dull thud, venting his fury. He shot to his feet and turned to face the silent bar. The dead, lifeless scene made it impossible to suppress his anger any longer.

”Jesus Christ! Look! Open your eyes and take a good look! This is the team you support! This is the team you think represents the San Francisco 49ers! Do you see it? Besides Bambi, no one is even playing! Their performance is absolutely abysmal! But that’s not the worst part. What’s even more disgusting is that they aren’t even trying!”

Chris’s voice echoed through the bar. Jeff, sitting next to him, tried to calm him down, but Chris shook off his arm. ”What, they’re allowed to resist Bambi, but I’m not allowed to bitch about them? If they had any guts, they’d open their eyes and take a good look at those offensive players! Besides throwing tantrums at themselves and their teammates, what are they doing? Nothing! They’ve done nothing. They’re like headless chickens, completely lost on the field! Fuck!”

Chris kicked the bar hard, but his heaving chest still couldn’t contain his emotions. ”Why are you all so quiet? Look! Bambi is fighting alone! He never gave up! For the entire first half, only Bambi was trying, persevering, fighting! He needs our support! Goddamn Jesus Christ! We should unite! We should be cheering for Bambi! This is our team! This is our quarterback!”

As he spoke, Chris’s eyes started to well up, but he quickly raised a hand and wiped away any trace of moisture. He lifted his mug and downed the rest of his beer in one go. ”As God is my witness! That’s our quarterback! That’s our hero! Right now, he needs us, and we’re just sitting here in silence! Cowards! You’re all a bunch of goddamn cowards!”
