American Football: King of the Bay Area

The San Francisco 49ers’ offense lined up again. After being sacked for a loss of six yards, they were pushed back to their own fourteen-yard line. It was now second and sixteen, and the grim situation was teetering on the edge of a crisis.

But as Lu Ke led the offense onto the fourteen-yard line, the entire Joe’s Bar erupted. Cliff Hart held his flag high. He couldn’t wave it properly in the crowded space, but Jeff and Danny stretched it out between them, pretending it was flapping in a gale. The scene was a little comical, but the atmosphere was incredibly solemn.

Cliff shouted, ”WE ARE!”

”WARRIORS!” the fans in the bar roared in unison. Jonathan waved his arms wildly, urging everyone to get on their feet and join the chant.

”WE ARE!”

”WARRIORS!”

Little by little, everyone joined in, roaring and shouting as if they had lost their minds. They weren’t cheering because the 49ers were winning. They were cheering because number fourteen, standing on that field, had united them with his voice, his determination, and his passion.

They were the 49ers, Warriors who never gave up easily in the face of adversity!

”GO, BAMBI, GO!” After the chant died down, Jeff pumped his fists, shouting with unrestrained passion. Veins bulged on his neck, but his face was lit with a brilliant smile. In that moment, he was transported back to college, back to the day of the Rose Bowl, back to the game against the University of Southern California, witnessing the birth of a miracle.

Then, voices rose and fell all across the bar. ”GO, BAMBI! GO!” Their belief quietly coalesced, binding them together. Raised glasses, pumping fists, red-faced shouts, and sharp, piercing shrieks filled the air.

Anthony Tinozzo stood behind the bar, watching the crowd of fans going absolutely wild. His earlier composure and indifference vanished as he watched them lose their minds, one by one. Despite himself, a broad smile spread across his face. He still loved scenes like this—even the constant cursing, even the drunken brawls. He loved it all, because it was so alive.

”Anthony!” Jonathan called out, waving for Anthony to join their chorus of cheers.

But Anthony just slammed a glass down hard on the counter. He shot a look at the one Jonathan had smashed just moments before, but didn’t say a word. Instead, he pointed at the TV screen. ”If you don’t shut it, you’re going to miss Bambi’s play.”

His words worked like a magic spell. The entire bar instantly fell silent—so quiet, it seemed as if even the sound of breathing had vanished.

Lu Ke’s mind grew preternaturally calm. He cleared his head of all distractions and stared straight ahead, his eyes quietly scanning the defense’s formation—

The Philadelphia Eagles were still using a highly deceptive formation. The first line of defense, facing the Offensive Line, was stacked with five players, creating one-on-one matchups. Two other linebackers were positioned half a step behind them, poised to strike. It looked like a heavy blitz, but they hadn’t relaxed their coverage against the run or the short pass.

A little farther back, the two cornerbacks and two safeties in the secondary formed a wide funnel. The two cornerbacks were positioned wider and closer to the line of scrimmage; the two safeties were a bit more inside and about four or five yards deeper. They looked like a wide-mouthed sack, ready to swallow up any short, medium, or long passes.

Lu Ke’s pupils contracted slightly. ’The analysis from the film room was right. A run play now could catch them by surprise and be very effective, especially with the one-on-one matchups on the defensive line. Those two linebackers hanging back are shifting on their feet, their bodies twitching. They’re clearly still hungry for a blitz.’

Indeed, the Philadelphia Eagles’ blitz packages had been incredibly successful today. While they only had two sacks so far—which seemed tame compared to the Cincinnati Bengals last week—the number of times they had broken through the pocket was staggering, allowing them to completely control the tempo of the game.

An idea struck Lu Ke. He shouted, ”Ginn! Ginn!” Ted Ginn Jr. turned his head. Lu Ke flashed a hand signal, and Ginn gave an ”OK” sign in return. He quickly shifted inward, positioning himself on the left side of the Offensive Line, now just one man away from Chilo Rachal.

The San Francisco 49ers’ offensive formation shifted slightly. Michael Crabtree was lined up on the far left, almost on the sideline. Ted Ginn Jr., who had been positioned midway between Crabtree and the Offensive Line, now moved in tight next to the line.

On the right, Kyle Williams mirrored Crabtree’s position on the opposite side, while Logan Newman took Ginn’s original spot. This spread them far apart, stretching the offensive formation wider and wider.

It was still a Pistol Formation, with Marcus Lynch standing parallel to Lu Ke and four receivers spread out. Lu Ke was about four yards behind the Offensive Line. Although the formation was stretched wide, the alignment itself wasn’t particularly tricky. Now, the question was—

With just that small shift from Ginn, was it a pass or a run? Had the play call changed, or not? The Philadelphia Eagles players didn’t react, seemingly prepared to counter any change by holding their ground.

Lu Ke didn’t seem to mind. He used a hard count twice in a row. Although he didn’t manage to draw the defense offside, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense. Seeing the play clock tick down—5, 4, 3—Lu Ke finally barked out the official cadence. This was the real snap.

After taking the snap, Lu Ke didn’t drop back at all. Lynch, who was standing about three yards to his left, started running, cutting diagonally toward a gap in the middle of the Offensive Line. He didn’t rush past Lu Ke, performing a play-action fake. But just as they crossed paths, Lynch formed a pocket with his hands to take the handoff.

A run play!

It was still a run play! A narrow lane had opened up in the middle of the Offensive Line. If Lynch could just hit the hole at the right moment, he could get a huge gain. On a difficult second and sixteen, the San Francisco 49ers had chosen to run the ball instead of pass. It was an audacious call.

But at the very instant Lynch and Lu Ke crossed paths, Lynch’s hands, tucked near his stomach for the handoff, failed to secure the ball. His hands collided with Lu Ke’s, and the football popped straight up into the air. Lynch, however, had no time to stop his momentum and had to keep charging forward.

His 45-point rated Fake Pass Action had failed him again at a critical moment.

Lu Ke didn’t even have time to curse. He looked up, his eyes locked on the ball’s trajectory, while his peripheral vision took stock of his teammates:

Lynch was already moving away. He altered his path from the diagonal cut and charged to the right, blocking an outside linebacker on the contain. The five players on the Offensive Line, in their one-on-one matchups, showed immense focus. For the first time all game, they had truly formed a pocket—an impenetrable one.

As expected, the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive unit had blitzed. All five linemen and both linebackers charged forward, once again showing off their potent attack.

But this time, the five defensive linemen ran into a wall, getting stonewalled and pushed back. Of the two linebackers, the one on the right collided head-on with Lynch, while the one on the left got tangled up with Ginn before he could break through.

The pocket was completely intact, providing textbook-perfect protection.

The football rose vertically and fell vertically. Lu Ke caught it steadily with both hands. He took a few choppy steps in place to adjust his footing. Without a moment’s hesitation, he raised his right arm, drawing it back like a full moon bow. As the string reached its apex, his forearm whipped forward, unleashing a powerful force that sent the football flying—high, fast, and with purpose.

”The play! The San Francisco 49ers are showing a play-action look as Lynch cuts across, but... wait, it is a real run play! No, the handoff between Lynch and Lu Ke was botched! The ball is loose! This is terrible!”

In the broadcast booth, after that heart-stopping moment, the two commentators regained their composure and dove back into their analysis. Teddy was on the call. His speech was a bit slow and he missed a few details, keeping his focus locked on the quarterback.

”No panic! The San Francisco 49ers’ rookie quarterback isn’t panicking at all. His footwork is still incredibly steady. After securing the ball, he raises his head and starts looking for a receiver... wait, Lu Ke is throwing! My God! Lu Ke just threw it! Who is he targeting?”

Both Teddy and Kirk fell silent, their eyes following the football as it traced a rainbow arc through the air. The high, fast pass spun with incredible velocity, tearing through the brilliant sunlight at the horizon. Even the crystal-clear blue sky seemed to become breathtakingly tense. Then, a gasp of astonishment—

”Number eighty-eight! Number eighty-eight! The San Francisco 49ers’ number eighty-eight! Logan Newman! He’s breaking away! He’s fighting with everything he has to shake the safety’s coverage! It’s too late! The Philadelphia Eagles’ number twenty-nine, safety Nate Allen, completely failed to anticipate this turn of events! His reaction was too slow, he can’t keep up!”

Kirk, catching the details on the screen, couldn’t contain his excitement and jumped in. ”Newman broke free! He successfully escaped Allen’s first tackle attempt! Allen only managed to graze his waist before completely losing him! There’s no one left! My God, there are no defenders left in the Eagles’ backfield! Newman! NEWMAN!”
