American Football: King of the Bay Area

Standing on the sideline, Lu Ke was focused on discussing tactics when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a group of brawny men thunder past like a migrating herd of antelope. It wasn’t just him; Craig, Kip, and the others all looked up, their attention inadvertently drawn to the game, their eyes glued to Marcus as he sprinted at full tilt.

A touchdown! Marcus had actually scored a kickoff return touchdown! This was the San Francisco 49ers’ first return touchdown of the new season, and it came in this week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It couldn’t have been more timely. They had closed the score gap in the quickest, most efficient way possible, throwing all the pressure onto the offense led by Michael Vick!

Without a doubt, Marcus Lynch had truly proven his worth in today’s game!

Watching Marcus celebrate wildly, Lu Ke couldn’t help but break into a wide grin. The other guys from the offense on the sideline all came over, high-fiving Lu Ke one after another in celebration. Logan gave an exaggerated stretch. ”Well now, that saves us some trouble. We get to keep resting. Not bad, not bad at all.”

After a successful return touchdown, everything followed the standard post-touchdown procedure. This meant the San Francisco 49ers’ offense and the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense would remain on the sidelines to rest, while the 49ers’ defense and the Eagles’ offense, who had been battling it out on the field just a minute ago, would have to head right back out to face off again.

As they spoke, a beaming Marcus ran off the field. He spread his arms and charged toward Lu Ke and Logan, eyebrows raised high, eyes sparkling, and mouth wide open, just like... just like a Labrador pouncing on its owner. The only thing missing was a tail wagging furiously behind him.

Marcus finally skidded to a halt in front of his friends and roared with a massive grin, ”Say it! Who’s the man? Who is it?”

Lu Ke and Logan exchanged a look and shook their heads in resignation. Then, they both raised their hands, extended their index fingers, and with an exaggerated downward flick of their wrists, pointed at Marcus. They angled their bodies slightly, tilted their chins up, and a mischievous glint sparkled in their narrowed eyes. The dramatic pose showed they were fully committed to playing along, diligently seeing the little act through to the end.

Marcus nodded, completely satisfied. Then, he smugly clasped his hands behind his head and began to gyrate his hips excitedly, his face contorted in an incredibly over-the-top expression. He looked like he was dancing his heart out to electronic music in a nightclub. The cheesy posture and movements were so cringey it was hard to watch.

”Blech!” Everyone groaned in disgust, as if they had just seen something foul, and scrambled to get away. Even Craig and Kip were caught up in the exodus. Seeing the wide-open space that had suddenly formed in front of Marcus, the whole group burst into laughter.

In stark contrast to the San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles were in a much fouler mood. After both special teams took the field again, David Akens made no mistake, cleanly kicking the extra point. The San Francisco 49ers had brought the score to ”24-21.” Now, only a field goal separated them. With plenty of time left in the game, the tides of uncertainty began to churn once more.

Before the fourth quarter, people had hoped for an explosive showdown like this, but no one thought their wish would actually come true. For neutral fans, this was a spectacular treat. But for the fans of both teams, the heart-stopping moments were just beginning, and their palms were already starting to sweat.

The San Francisco 49ers’ special teams came on for the kickoff. They didn’t repeat their opponent’s earlier mistake, kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. The Philadelphia Eagles would start their drive from their own 20-yard line.

The tension in the air grew thick, almost suffocating. The Philadelphia Eagles’ offense seemed to feel the pressure, as the inconsistency that had plagued them over the past three games resurfaced. At this critical juncture, a pass from Michael Vick went wildly astray, a running play was stopped dead in its tracks, and then he was sacked...

In the blink of an eye, the Philadelphia Eagles went three-and-out.

Facing a surging San Francisco 49ers team, the Philadelphia Eagles not only failed to rally and pull away, but they also went promptly three-and-out, handing possession right back to their opponents. For the home team, the situation couldn’t have been worse. They were instantly on the defensive.

As they left the field, Vick got into a heated argument with his players on the Offense Line. They clearly had conflicting views on the previous sack, and the tension was palpable. Even the home fans started to boo, hoping their team would get its act together.

The opportunity fell to the 49ers once again. Trailing by only a field goal, this drive was their chance to tie the game or even take the lead, completely turning the tide. Taking the field once more, the offense displayed a powerful, united resolve. Lu Ke, especially, was in peak form.

Taking the field, Lu Ke came out firing on all cylinders. With two consecutive screen passes for eight and nine yards, he found Crabtree and Newman respectively. Using their size to his advantage, he kept the drive moving, decisively picking up two first downs.

Next came two consecutive power runs by Kendall Hunter, gaining a total of nine yards. On third-and-one, Lu Ke found Kyle Williams with a four-yard pass. Just like that, in a flash, the San Francisco 49ers’ offense crossed midfield with barely any resistance.

They were one step closer to field goal range. But just as quickly, the 49ers’ offense ran into some trouble. Lu Ke watched the slightly arcing trajectory of the ball, his eyes locked on his target, Michael Crabtree. It was a quick, decisive five-yard pass, intended to take advantage of the timing and Crabtree’s strength as a physical receiver to move the chains.

But at the critical moment, Nnamdi Asomugha, the Pro Bowl cornerback who had just joined the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason, made a clutch defensive play. He physically boxed out Crabtree at the last second—the latter’s fingertips had already brushed the ball, but the powerful collision knocked it loose. He could only watch helplessly as the ball popped back into the air before gravity pulled it down, where it fell harmlessly to the turf.

Prior to this play, Lu Ke had completed a short pass to Ted Ginn Jr. for three yards on first down. On second down, Marcus Lynch ran for another three. That left them facing a third-and-four. Now, Asomugha’s defense had broken up the connection between Lu Ke and Crabtree, resulting in a failed third-down conversion.

The plan had been to exploit the Crabtree versus Asomugha matchup, letting the big receiver use his size to win the one-on-one battle against the cornerback for the catch. But things didn’t go as planned; the slimmest of margins had led to a disappointing result. Having just crossed midfield and on the verge of entering field goal range, to have their drive stall so abruptly was even more difficult to swallow.

”Flag on the play.” Just as the San Francisco 49ers’ offense was sinking into despair, a yellow flag came to their rescue. The referee announced, ”Holding, defense, number thirty-one. It’s a five-yard penalty. Automatic first down, San Francisco.”

Number thirty-one was this year’s rookie cornerback, Curtis Marsh. He wasn’t a starter, just a rotational player in the secondary. During the last play, he had been covering Kyle Williams and had accidentally committed a holding foul. The Eagles had already gotten the third-down stop, but now they had just gifted their opponents a fresh set of downs and would have to do it all over again.

The entire crowd at Lincoln Financial Field let out a collective groan of frustration, but at Joe’s Bar, an astonishing roar of celebration erupted.

There was no time for elation for the San Francisco 49ers’ offense, however. They quickly composed themselves and prepared to run the next play.

Lu Ke quickly snapped the ball and handed it off to Marcus Lynch on first down. But the Philadelphia Eagles, still reeling from the penalty, were now laser-focused. They not only stopped Lynch from gaining any ground but actually pushed him back for a loss of a yard. Their run defense continued to be as formidable as it had been all game.

On second-and-eleven, Lu Ke connected with Logan Newman, but it was unfortunately only a short four-yard gain. Newman was immediately swarmed by two defenders and tackled, unable to advance any further.

Third-and-seven. Facing another crucial long-yardage conversion, the San Francisco 49ers once again lined up in the Shotgun Formation, seemingly looking to replicate their earlier 64-yard touchdown pass. After the snap, however, Lu Ke unexpectedly scrambled laterally, found an opening in the Eagles’ intermediate coverage, and released the ball.

It was a traditional post route, a pass delivered over the middle for about twelve yards. Simple and direct. With a quick, clean release, Lu Ke had already completed the throw—his target was Ted Ginn Jr.!

For Ginn, who was known for his speed, running a basic route like this—straight, cut inside, then accelerate—was second nature. But the defender was a persistent nuisance. The safety providing help coverage, Tom Nelson, was playing tight, physical defense, constantly using his body to bump Ginn. Even though he couldn’t quite match Ginn’s speed, his constant interference disrupted Ginn’s rhythm and balance, preventing him from fully leveraging his advantage.

Despite this, Ginn still reached out his hands to make the catch. The ball was getting closer, closer... but his stride, thrown off by the defender, had put him a fraction of a second behind. He could only try to tip the ball with his fingertips, but at the last moment, it was just out of reach. His fingers grazed uselessly across the surface of the football, unable to get a purchase, and he could only watch as it slipped past his grasp and fell to the grass.

”Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!”

Ginn cursed repeatedly. He adjusted his footing and, without even taking a breath, immediately turned and yelled at the referee, ”Flag! That was pass interference!”
