American Football: King of the Bay Area

Seeing the worry in Logan’s eyes and his bewildered expression, Lu Ke laughed freely. ”Hold on, don’t tell me you were too nervous to sleep last night? Is that why you showed up at the practice field so early today?”

Looking at the gloating Lu Ke, Logan’s expression darkened. ’I really need to pick my friends more carefully,’ he thought. But despite himself, he did feel a little of the tension ease.

The two of them pushed open the locker room doors and were met with an almost eerily serene scene. Everyone was quietly going about their business. No one spoke, no one gossiped; only glances were exchanged, rippling slowly through the air. The groaning of the door as it swung was suddenly deafening, its ”CREEEAK... CREEEAK...” seeming to taunt the room:

Speak up. Who’s going to be the one to talk?

But no one made a sound.

Today, it seemed every player had arrived earlier than usual, not just Logan. All the rookies were already there, as were most of the veterans. The room was crowded, yet utterly silent. The quiet, flowing stillness invisibly amplified the tension.

You didn’t even have to look for them. The shifting glances around the room naturally drew your eyes to the other two focal points: Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick.

With his gear bag still slung over his shoulder, Alex looked like he had just arrived at the training facility. He stood in front of his locker, pulling out his equipment piece by piece while exchanging a few quiet words with Vernon Davis, who was standing beside him. It seemed to be nothing more than a typical morning exchange of pleasantries.

Colin sat on a bench in the middle of the locker room, right leg crossed over his left, bent over tying his shoelaces. He was completely absorbed in the task, as if oblivious to the currents of tension swirling around him, tying his laces with meticulous, painstaking precision. Not far across from him, Brylen Edwards stood watching Colin, seemingly hesitating whether he should approach.

The arrival of Lu Ke and Logan shattered the room’s delicate balance. In an instant, all eyes shot toward them. Then, just as quickly, they darted toward Alex and Colin. The invisible pull between the three men made the air grow thick and heavy, almost suffocating.

To Lu Ke, the whole scene was actually a little amusing. He could see that everyone was reining themselves in.

The locker room conflict had been building for the past three weeks, bit by bit, until it provoked Jim Hubble’s fury. He had forcibly suppressed it, restoring a superficial peace. No one wanted to get on the wrong side of the new head coach, especially one with an iron-fist style. But the turbulent undercurrents were still swelling, growing stronger by the day.

Parris Harrisson was staring daggers at Lu Ke, his sharp gaze so intense he looked like he wanted to eat him alive. Lu Ke had never understood what irreconcilable conflict existed between him and the Defense Team, but looking at Parris now, it seemed the two of them really needed to get in a boxing ring and trade some real, solid blows. Otherwise, Lu Ke was afraid Parris might just explode on the spot.

Brylen Edwards was no exception, his eyes bulging as if they were about to pop out of their sockets, radiating an undisguised air of raw violence. For the past three weeks, Brylen had been completely sidelined. He had lost all competitiveness for the wide receiver position. On the rare occasions he came on as a rotational player, he was practically invisible; Lu Ke never once even attempted a pass in his direction.

On a football field, fists might be a crude and simple solution, but sometimes they were effective—though a quarterback problem was never something that could be solved with a fight. Now, the explosive atmosphere in the San Francisco 49ers locker room had to be contained, waiting for today’s quarterback duel to settle the score.

And so, an issue that should have been settled with fists was now being waged with glares. A street brawl had suddenly turned into a scene of palace intrigue. Unwittingly, the battle for the starting quarterback spot had taken on a new, twisted meaning. The sheer out-of-place awkwardness of it all made Lu Ke want to laugh.

”Morning,” Lu Ke said, breaking into a bright smile as he took the initiative to greet everyone. The simple act shattered the locker room’s equilibrium, and the oppressive, heavy atmosphere instantly came to life.

”Mornin’, Bambi,” Ted Ginn Jr. was the first to respond. Kyle Williams followed, joking with a smile, ”Finished your warm-up already?”

At the same time, a scattering of other greetings echoed from Chilo Rachal, Michael Crabtree, Jonathan Goodwin, and others. ”Morning, Bambi.”

Amidst the chorus of greetings, Mike Lupati’s boisterous voice cut through. ”While you were sleeping in, Bambi was already training. You should take a lesson from him.”

”Piss off. You talk like you’re so hardworking. Weren’t you later than me today?” Williams retorted, not backing down.

Rupati flexed his biceps and then gave a sharp hip thrust. ”How do you know I was sleeping in? And not getting in some... morning cardio?” His reply instantly sent the room into an uproar of hoots and jeers, and the awkward, raw tension finally began to dissipate.

Without warning, Kaepernick shot to his feet. He grabbed his helmet and strode out of the locker room in silence, brushing past Lu Ke without a word or even a glance, as if he wasn’t there at all. His figure quickly vanished down the hallway.

As fellow rookies this year, the competition between Lu Ke and Kaepernick was more direct, more raw. After the ”pause” from his concussion, the connections Kaepernick had built among the other rookies seemed to have vanished. Moreover, with four preseason losses stacked against three regular-season wins, Kaepernick’s position seemed all the more tenuous.

In today’s quarterback duel, Kaepernick wasn’t just fighting for the starting job—he was fighting for himself, and for the rest of his professional career.

Rookie quarterbacks often start their careers on the bench. Aaron Rodgers even sat for three seasons. But the person keeping Rodgers on the bench was Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, not just some random rookie, and certainly not one of the Undrafted Players—Colin Kaepernick was a second-round pick!

And so, Kaepernick stormed out of the locker room, radiating an intense, combative energy. After a moment’s hesitation, Brylen Edwards followed, jogging out after him.

Lu Ke pulled his gaze away and walked toward his own locker. His eyes happened to meet Vernon Davis’s. He gave a polite nod. There was no smile and no words were exchanged, but it was a greeting nonetheless.

Alex Smith, whose back had been to Lu Ke, noticed Davis’s gesture. He turned his head and offered a polite smile in greeting before turning back and quickly getting ready.

Parris Harrisson swaggered over, his voice deliberately exaggerated. ”Alex, how’s it going? You ready? Ready to put on a show out on the practice field today? Let the kids see what a seasoned veteran looks like, huh? Show ’em what real experience is? That’s something money can’t buy.”

Although he was talking to Alex, Parris’s eyes kept drifting, intentionally or not, in Lu Ke’s direction. The gesture was so obvious it was almost clumsy. ’Athletes really aren’t cut out for palace intrigue,’ Lu Ke thought to himself.

”Parris, hurry up and get ready. I’ll see you on the practice field,” Alex said simply, clapping his friend on the shoulder.

But the other man acted as if he hadn’t heard, laughing theatrically again. ”Right, right, let’s hurry out to the practice field. Everyone’s waiting for your comeback, waiting for you to show off that masterful short-pass game of yours. Even Tom Brady sang your praises, didn’t he?”

”Parris!” Alex said, his voice dropping. ”I said, I’ll see you on the practice field!”

Clearly, Alex had no interest in continuing the war of words. His firm tone made Parris feel rebuffed. He shrugged. ”I know, I know. See you on the field. As long as you’re ready, everything’s good! I just wanted to let you know, the guys on the Defense Team have your back.”

With that, he raised his hands high in a gesture of surrender, turned, and swaggered off.

’Parris must be a movie buff,’ Lu Ke thought. ’Especially Westerns. He’s definitely seen too many of them.’

When he turned back around, Lu Ke jumped in surprise. Logan, Marcus, Aldon, Kendall, and a few others—six or seven of them in total—were huddled in a group right behind him. Their eyes were fixed intently on Parris as he walked to the far end of the locker room. Then Marcus spoke first. ”Clown.”

”Jerk.”

”Idiot.”

”...Psycho?”

The last voice belonged to Kendall, who sounded a little unsure. When he saw all eyes turn to him, he shrugged innocently. ”I felt like I was supposed to keep it going, but I didn’t know what to say next.”

A short laugh escaped Lu Ke’s lips. ”Instead of watching the show in here, we might as well go watch it on the practice field. The real stage is out there.” His reminder made everyone’s eyes light up. Chattering and shoving, they all started to get busy, changing into their practice gear and getting ready to head out.

By the time the members of the coaching staff arrived at the training facility, the players had already finished their warm-ups on their own. They were scattered across the practice field in small groups, doing basic cool-down stretches. Such a proactive, self-motivated scene was a rare sight indeed.

Kip Kester knew full well that the locker room problem hadn’t been solved. Even three victories had only served to ease the escalating conflict; they hadn’t truly resolved it.

In competitive sports, winning was always the best medicine, but that didn’t apply today. Kip couldn’t fathom why.

Maybe it had to do with Lu Ke’s Chinese descent, maybe not. After all, there was no precedent to refer to before him. Perhaps it was his status as one of the Undrafted Players, or the perception that his starting spot wasn’t earned on merit, or that his college career provided too small a sample size... But regardless, today’s quarterback battle was unavoidable.

For the sake of victory, and for the sake of the locker room.
