A Warm Marriage After Rebirth

Chapter 106: Chapter 106: After the Fire

’Holy shit! Where did that gentle, serene girl from just now go? How did she instantly transform into such a violent brute! And is this the kind of strength a woman should have? She just crushed his wrist!’

The man blocked Seraphina Sterling with his one good hand. ”This has nothing to do with us! If we were really the ones who set the fire, we wouldn’t have needed to come make a deal with you! Also, open your eyes and take a good look—the fire has already engulfed the entire floor. It’s nothing but a ruin up there now! Even if your mom is upstairs, there’s no way she could have survived!”

That man’s words lit the fuse. Seraphina Sterling slammed a fist into his chin, and blood immediately trickled from the left corner of his mouth. ”Shut your fucking mouth! You’d better pray my mom is alright. Otherwise, I can’t guarantee what I’ll do to you—and to your boss!”

’Damn! Is she even a woman? She hits so damn hard!’

The man spat out a mouthful of blood. His luck was just so damn rotten. He’d thought this would be a simple job, but he never imagined it would turn into such a colossal screw-up.

”Seraphina! Seraphina! Are you alright? Are you hurt?” An anxious voice called out from the crowd. Kimberly Jennings came rushing over, and only when she saw that Seraphina was unharmed did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.

”Mom, I’m fine. I just got back!” Seeing that Kimberly Jennings was safe and sound, the violent aura around Seraphina Sterling instantly vanished without a trace.

”As long as you’re okay, as long as you’re okay!” Kimberly Jennings hugged Seraphina tightly, her heart clenching with lingering fear as she looked up at the fire, which was gradually dying down. She couldn’t bear to imagine what she would have done if something had really happened to Seraphina.

The man hadn’t left. His mission was to make a deal with Seraphina Sterling and retrieve the Jade Bracelet. This accident, while unexpected, wouldn’t stop him from completing his task.

The fire wasn’t extinguished until nightfall. It was arguably the largest fire Tollan Town had seen in a decade. Despite the combined efforts of firefighters, armed police, and local residents, an entire floor was still incinerated. Fortunately, there were no casualties, though the property damage was severe.

This building provided housing for residents displaced by demolition. On the entire floor, aside from Seraphina Sterling’s family, all the other units were still under renovation; no one else had moved in. That was how the other residents were spared. Otherwise, how could there possibly have been no casualties?

The fire was completely extinguished, and its cause was still under investigation.

Seraphina Sterling and Kimberly Jennings walked up the stairs to their apartment. Everything was charred and pitch-black, and they could only vaguely make out the layout. Seraphina made her way to her room, and her last shred of hope vanished. ’The bracelet must have been burned to ash.’

”You can go now,” Seraphina said. ”I will get to the bottom of this. If I find out your people were behind it, I won’t show any mercy. And do me a favor—go back and repeat my words exactly to your boss.”

Seeing that the deal for the bracelet was off, the man knew there was no point in staying any longer. He turned to leave, but not before making one last defense for his boss.

”Believe it or not, this incident had nothing to do with us. From the very beginning, we weren’t the only group after that bracelet! If you want to blame someone, you can only blame yourself for getting mixed up in this mess.”

Only after the man had left did Kimberly Jennings ask, ”Seraphina, what kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into? How did things get this bad?”

”Mom, don’t worry. Maybe I was just overthinking things. This was all just an accident.” Seraphina didn’t want her mother to know too much, worried she would be drawn into danger because of it.

But clearly, Kimberly Jennings didn’t buy it. ”Seraphina, tell me the truth. What really happened? You’ve been insisting I go out for walks and visit neighbors for the past few days. Was it because you knew something dangerous like this was going to happen?”

Seraphina knew she couldn’t hide it any longer, so she chose to tell a version of the truth she hoped her mother could handle. ”The truth is, I bought a bracelet, but it seems it’s no ordinary thing, and a lot of people want it. I realized it was trouble, so I agreed to sell it to that man who was just here, but who knew...”

”Seraphina, you’re an adult now. Since your father passed away, it’s just the two of us, mother and daughter, relying on each other. I won’t interfere with your interests or get in the way of your future, but you must promise me you’ll stay safe! And your grades absolutely cannot slip! And one more thing... stay far away from people from wealthy and powerful families!”

Kimberly Jennings added, her voice fraught with worry.

”Mom, I know, I know! I promise you!” Seraphina Sterling raised her right hand. ”But the most important thing right now is where we’re going to live. We obviously can’t stay here anymore!”

”We’ll go back to the Jennings Family!” Kimberly Jennings’s decision was swift and final.

The Jennings Family... Seraphina felt a headache coming on. ’Those people... they’re absolutely insufferable.’
