I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 773: Return of The Little Lamb

Jack lay in bed, staring at the ceiling of the master suite. His body felt like it had been reassembled from broken pieces, each muscle aching with a deep, bone-level weariness that no amount of rest seemed capable of addressing.

The sheets beneath him were soaked through with sweat that had cooled hours ago.

Seven days, his body had been healing from the Madness state, from the sheer strain of pushing himself beyond every limit he’d known existed.

His eyes fixed on a single point on the ceiling as his mind worked through what needed to happen next.

The notifications had stopped cascading hours ago. The questions had settled into the background noise of his consciousness. And now, with physical recovery beginning to stabilize, there was only one path forward.

Jack’s fingers curled into fists against the mattress. His knuckles went white as the muscles in his forearms contracted.

The movement was small, barely perceptible, but it contained within it the entirety of his resolve.

The decision to move, to pursue the path that had been laid before him.

He pushed himself up, ignoring the protest of his muscles. The movement was measured, each shift of his weight calculated to avoid aggravating the internal injuries that were still knitting themselves back together.

His feet touched the cold stone floor of the bedroom, and sensation shot up through his legs.

The world tilted slightly, his vision swimming for a moment before settling. He gripped the edge of the bed, steadying himself, feeling the cool silk beneath his palms.

The dizziness faded as his body adjusted to the vertical orientation, blood sluggishly redistributing through his system.

He dressed slowly. His hands moved through the motions.

Pulling on black pants, wrapping his chest with fresh cloth, and securing his armor. Each piece went into place like he was assembling himself piece by piece, converting raw flesh and bone into something capable of standing before a god.

When he was finished, Jack stood before the mirror. His reflection stared back at him.

He looked different from the way he had a week ago. Something had shifted beneath his skin, something that went deeper than physical scars.

He turned away from the mirror without lingering.

Jack opened a portal and stepped through as he traveled underneath Sorne.

The stairs descended into darkness, each step taking him further from the world of sunlight. The air grew colder as he descended, carrying with it the particular chill of underground spaces.

The shrine was exactly as he remembered.

The altar room was vast, built in a perfect circle. A massive statue of Dreknar stood at cardinal point and small statues at intercardinal points around the perimeter, each one carved from black stone.

Their faces were turned inward toward the chamber’s center, their empty stone eyes watching the space between them with eternal vigilance.

Green fire burned in braziers positioned between each statue, casting dancing shadows that made the carved faces seem almost alive.

Black and green tapestries hung from the high ceiling, their fabric rippling slightly in air currents that Jack couldn’t identify.

In the center of the altar room lay a stone circle, intricate runic patterns carved into its surface with such precision that each line seemed to glow faintly with its own inner light.

The runes were written in a language Jack didn’t recognize, but he understood their purpose. This was the conduit. The place where mortal consciousness could touch the divine realm.

Jack moved to the center of the circle and knelt.

His knees pressed against cold stone, the shock of temperature shooting up through his legs.

He positioned his hands in front of him, palms pressed together, fingers pointed upward.

A gesture of supplication that felt foreign on his body yet necessary for what was about to happen: his head lowered, eyes closing, and his breathing deepened.

The world began to shift.

It wasn’t violent or sudden. Instead, it was like sinking.

His consciousness was heavy, and the material world was water, and he was allowing himself to descend through it.

His body remained in the shrine, kneeling motionless on the stone, but his mind, the essence of what he was, began to rise away from flesh and bone.

Darkness enveloped him. Not the darkness of closed eyes or night, but the absolute absence of light, of direction, of any reference point by which consciousness could orient itself.

Jack fell and rose simultaneously, moving in all directions and no direction at all.

Time lost meaning.

Space became irrelevant.

Then, like surfacing from deep water, his awareness broke through into something else entirely.

The throne room resolved around him with the solidity of a place that was far more real than reality itself.

Jack stood on a floor of black stone that seemed to pulse with its own heartbeat.

The walls rose around him in an endless expanse of darkness, broken only by the burning lanterns that hung at intervals.

Their flames were green, the particular shade of Dreknar’s essence, bright enough to cast harsh shadows but not enough to illuminate the far reaches of the chamber.

Red drapes hung between massive chains, their fabric so deep in color it appeared almost black except where the green firelight touched it.

The patterns woven into them told stories of conquest, of divine will reshaping reality.

And at the far end of the chamber, elevated on steps that seemed to rise and fall in Jack’s vision like they were breathing, sat the throne.

The throne of bones.

It was massive, constructed from the skeletal remains of creatures Jack couldn’t identify. Femurs, ribs, skulls.

All fitted together with joints that still moved, creating a structure that seemed alive despite being composed entirely of death.

Dark metal had been fused with the bone, reinforcing it, making it into something that could support the weight of a god without fracturing.

And sitting upon that throne was Dreknar the Black Flame.

The demon god’s jet-black skin was cut through with veins of brilliant green that pulsed across his massive frame, visible arteries of divine power running through his form.

His horns curved back from his skull like a crown of bone, impressive in their size and scope.

His eyes burned with green fire, two points of emerald intensity that tracked Jack’s every movement with the particular focus of a predator observing prey.

Not with hunger, but with the kind of keen interest that something vastly more complex was afoot.

Unlike the previous visits, Jack felt no suffocation pressure.

The weight of the divine presence was still there, the invisible pressure that should have driven lesser beings to their knees and kept them there.

But it didn’t press down on Jack.

Instead, it resonated.

His demonic essence, that part of him that had been awakening since he began consuming demon hearts, recognized the presence before him and responded in turn.

The two forces, his nascent demonic nature and Dreknar’s ancient godhood, found a frequency that harmonized.

Jack’s chest rose and fell as he breathed in the strange air of the throne room.

There was no oxygen here, no biological necessity for respiration, and yet his body performed the motion anyway. The habit of mortality persists even in the presence of divinity.

“The little lamb has finally decided to visit,” Dreknar rumbled, his voice carrying the weight of stone sliding across stone. “And here I was beginning to wonder if you’d managed to kill yourself with that Madness play.”
