I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 762: Ren vs. Jack Part II

Ren realized, with clinical certainty, that the rules had changed. Jack was no longer just a rogue student to be managed with a heavy hand and a defensive posture.

He was a lethal, unpredictable variable tapping into an absolute physics that could genuinely snap their soul-bond network if left unchecked.

If Jack landed another strike like that, the vibrational shock to the tether would dissolve the connection entirely, condemning them both to the void.

The time for restraint was over.

Ren’s entire demeanor turned ice-cold. The calm, instructive warrior vanished, replaced instantly by the terrifying, unyielding majesty of a general who had slaughtered gods to secure a kingdom.

The air around him grew incredibly heavy, a profound, golden aura erupting from his frame with such density that it physically suppressed the residual black sparks dancing across the ground.

”Forgive me, Jack,” Ren whispered, his voice carrying the finality of a falling guillotine.

He placed his left hand on the mouth of his scabbard and wrapped his right fingers around the hilt of his katana.

His thumb pressed against the guard, clearing the lock with a soft, distinct click that echoed through the wasteland like a death knell.

He was a streak of pure, unmitigated malice, his open hand extended once more, desperate to plant another internal explosion into Ren’s core.

He moved at speeds that defied the system’s visual processing, a shadow tearing through the gray light of the plain.

Ren drew his blade.

The motion was a singular, blinding flash of absolute perfection.

An execution of an ancient technique designed not to slaughter, but to dominate reality itself.

The sword did not leave the sheath with a sound; it simply existed in the space before him, leaving a crescent trail of pure, compressed golden aura in its wake.

The edge of the blade carved a precise, deep line directly across Jack’s torso.

The strike was masterfully controlled. It was deep enough to slice through the dense, black-veined skin of Jack’s chest, drawing a massive line of crimson that splattered against the gray rocks. Still, it was executed with such surgical, microscopic precision that it missed every vital internal organ, every primary artery, and every critical nerve cluster by a fraction of a millimeter.

But the damage was not merely physical. The true weight of the strike lay in the aura imbued within the steel.

A force designed specifically to enforce order upon chaos, to suppress the flow of external or corrupted mana within a target’s vessel.

The moment the blade made contact, the golden aura flooded Jack’s circulatory system as ice water poured into a boiling cauldron.

The shock of it was absolute, a violation of every burning nerve ending, a sudden, suffocating cold that penetrated deeper than flesh and bone, reaching into the very architecture of his demonic essence and forcing it into submission.

His blood crystallized for a microsecond before the heat reasserted dominance, creating a sensation like being simultaneously burned and frozen, his entire body a battlefield where order and chaos warred in excruciating, competing violence.

The black lightning dancing across his skin fizzled violently, turning into thin wreaths of gray smoke before snapping out of existence entirely.

The ancient patterns within his pupils shattered, scattering back into the dark recesses of his iris. The sensation was violation itself.

Something cold and external asserting dominance over what had felt, moments before, like absolute, unstoppable power.

[CRITICAL DAMAGE RECEIVED]

[WARNING: Madness State fading]

The massive system notifications flashed across Jack’s field of vision in blinding, intrusive red text, but his brain couldn’t even process the digital warning.

The sudden, absolute disruption of his dark mana felt as though his entire soul had been forcibly ripped out of his body and slammed back into a cold, human shell.

The unhinged adrenaline high vanished in an instant, leaving behind nothing but the staggering, raw reality of physical exhaustion and the burning agony of the chest wound.

Jack’s forward momentum died instantly. His knees buckled, his body tilting forward as the crimson line across his chest began to bleed in earnest, his breath catching in his throat as his human nervous system finally reasserted control over his senses.

But Ren was already finishing the motion.

He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t give Jack a single millisecond to recover, to let the residual dark energy surge back from the depths to heal the flesh or re-engage the trance.

Riding the absolute, fluid momentum of the follow-through from the slash, Ren pivoted on his heel. His movements were seamless, a continuous arc of martial perfection.

He brought the heavy, reinforced iron hilt of his katana directly around, striking Jack square in the temple with precise, concussive force.

The impact was clean. A sharp, solid thud echoed through the silence of the clearing.

Jack didn’t scream or struggle. The light in his yellow-orange eyes went entirely dark, his consciousness collapsing into absolute, velvet oblivion before his body even registered the descent.

He dropped like a stone into the dust, his limp form settling heavily against the cracked, blood-slicked stone of the wasteland.

The black veins pulsing beneath his skin receded completely, leaving his face pale, exhausted, and unmistakably human once more.

The long, clean cut across his chest seeped dark crimson, staining the gray earth beneath him, but the frantic, terrifying vibration that had threatened to tear his body apart was gone.

———-

Fifty meters away, where the massive corpse of the Herald still lay anchored to the stone by ten colossal blood spears, three dragons kept their heads low.

Nexia’s silver scales caught what little light remained in the barren wasteland, her massive form hunched in a posture of submission and vigilant observation.

Her wind-and-earth affinity allowed her perception to track the battle unfolding before her with a clarity that the other dragons could not match.

She had watched Jack’s internal detonation rock Ren backward.

Malacia’s copper scales radiated a faint, residual heat. The only fire she retained in her de-winged state.

She had ruled through dominion and fire for centuries. The image of a creature losing itself to something internal, something she couldn’t perceive or combat, struck at something primal within her.

Skatha remained rooted to the stone, her earth-affinity frame providing stability even without wings. Her massive body was heavier than the others, slower to respond, but her perceptual framework operated on principles of weight and balance.

She felt the disturbance in the air when Jack struck, felt the way reality itself seemed to shift under the pressure of whatever was happening between the Soul Warden and Ren.

”He’s losing himself,” Malacia spoke first, her voice low, rough with the friction of copper scales grinding against each other as she shifted her head.

It wasn’t a question. It was a statement born from observation and centuries of understanding predatory behavior. “Look at his movements. That isn’t a strategy anymore. That’s a creature operating on pure instinct and something else we don’t have language for.”

Nexia’s silver head turned fractionally, her attention splitting between the unfolding violence and Malacia’s words. “The Sovereign is containing him. He’s doing what we cannot. Imposing order from the outside.”

”Order,” Skatha rumbled, her voice like stone settling after an earthquake.

“You mean dominance. You mean the application of force so absolute that it rewrites the rules of combat.” She paused, her substantial frame shifting weight from one massive foreleg to another.

“But look at Soul Warden’s face before Ren struck him. Look at what was there before the suppression.”
