I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 754: Jack vs. The Red Herald Part IV

Jack’s laughter echoed across the barren wasteland. He took a step to the side, his vertical pupils tracking the Herald’s position with absolute precision.

The creature was still attempting to rise, its massive frame trembling as it pushed against stone fused to glass by an electrical discharge.

“Look around, Herald,” Jack called, his voice cutting through the chaos like a blade. “Take a moment. Look at what’s left of your grand army.”

The Herald’s golden eyes lifted slowly, movements sluggish and pained, scanning the landscape that surrounded them. What it saw would have shattered the consciousness of weaker creatures.

The de-winged dragons lay scattered across the barren wasteland like broken monuments to a fallen age.

Every creature that had marched behind the Herald’s command now existed as a crippled husk, grounded, wingless, stripped of the very essence that defined dragonkind.

They watched with eyes full of ash and resignation, their massive forms pinned beneath their own weight. Some were attempting to shift, move, or adjust to their new reality as creatures bound to earth.

Others lay motionless, their consciousness consumed by the realization of what they had become.

Singe’s bifurcated corpse, the creature’s two halves still seeping blood into the soil.

The separation was so clean, so precise, that it looked almost surgical despite the absolute violence of the bisection.

Khorne’s remains were scattered across an even wider radius, the ancient dragon’s body reduced to hundreds of fragments by Echo Strike’s temporal echoes.

Pieces of bone and scale were distributed across fifty meters of wasteland, creating a grotesque constellation of destruction.

Boreas’s severed head rested atop a stone outcropping, its expression frozen in the moment of death.

The great wind-dragon, one of the Herald’s most trusted lieutenants, was reduced to a trophy display, its green eyes staring sightlessly at the purple sky above.

The head was positioned at an angle that made it appear as if Boreas was still watching the battle unfold, observing the final moments of the Herald’s reign.

And beyond the army, beyond the fallen lieutenants, beyond everything else, there was only empty wasteland stretching to the horizon as the elves watched in awe of what had unfolded.

The Herald found himself in an isolated position, with no reinforcements en route, no viable escape paths, and no remaining capacity for organized opposition.

Every dragon that had stood at the Herald’s side was either dead or broken beyond utility. The creature stood in the center of a graveyard of its own making, surrounded by the corpses of its own soldiers, their blood painting the stones crimson and gold.

The Herald’s breathing accelerated into something resembling hyperventilation.

Its golden eyes darted from corpse to corpse, processing the reality of absolute isolation with gradually intensifying horror.

The fear passive that Jack’s presence imposed pressed down even harder, amplified by the recognition that there was no one left to shield behind, no command structure to fall back on, nothing but the Herald and Jack, separated by 30 meters of empty stone.

The creature’s massive frame shook, not from physical trauma but from something deeper, something that transcended mere pain.

The psychological weight of recognizing that it would face its death alone, in isolation, with no dragon to witness its final moments, struck harder than he ever thought it would.

The draconic pride that had sustained it through centuries suddenly fractured under the pressure of that knowledge.

A dragon should die surrounded by its kind, attended by creatures acknowledging its passing.

Not alone. Never alone.

The creature’s muscles began to tremble uncontrollably.

Its claws dug into the stone beneath it, carving furrows as the creature grappled with the binary choice before it: surrender to the fear and accept death as an inevitability, or fight with everything that remained of its existence.

The two impulses warred within its consciousness with such intensity that the Herald’s entire body seemed to vibrate from the internal conflict.

Pride warred with survival instinct.

The centuries of accumulated dominion warred with the primal drive to continue breathing.

The Herald’s consciousness fractured into competing impulses, each one screaming for primacy over the others.

Its jaw clenched so hard that blood seeping from old wounds accelerated its flow. The creature’s breathing became ragged and uneven, a manifestation of a mind attempting to process realities beyond its ability to comprehend.

Then something shifted.

The Herald’s eyes stopped moving. The golden orbs locked onto Jack’s form with renewed intensity.

The trembling in its massive frame transformed from fear into something else entirely.

A savage, animalistic determination born from the recognition that there was no escape, mercy, or alternative except to fight or die.

The creature’s entire physiology seemed to reorganize around a single, desperate imperative: survive, fight, overcome, or perish in the attempt.

The Herald threw its head back and released a roar that shook the very stones beneath them.

It was a sound of madness, of a creature driven past all reasonable limits of sanity by the sheer weight of humiliation.

The Herald had ruled for centuries.

He had commanded legions, stood at the right hand of the Dragon King himself.

And in the span of minutes, every vestige of that power had been stripped away, leaving only a broken creature standing in a wasteland surrounded by the corpses of those it had claimed to lead.

This creature refused to accept that ending.

Its massive limbs coiled, gathering every remaining reserve of strength.

The Herald’s muscles tensed so hard that visible veins appeared across its scales, pulsing with power.

The creature’s breathing became ragged, frantic, almost hyperventilating as it poured its consciousness into a single, desperate decision.

The Herald reached inward, past the physical body and into the core of its existence, accessing a draconic trait that had remained locked away for millennia.

A final resort that no dragon invoked unless facing absolute annihilation.

Life-burning.

The Herald’s core began to consume itself.

Two percent of its remaining existence burned away in a single catastrophic surge of power. The consumption was instantaneous, the creature’s own essence being converted directly into pure power.

The Herald’s health dropped from [43,688,158/50,000,000] to [42,688,158/50,000,000], but the energy released from that self-immolation was transformed into something that transcended normal draconic power.

A fierce red aura erupted around the Herald’s massive form.

The fire mana that the creature channeled through its own destruction created a hyper-dense, localized field of power that distorted the air around it.

The temperature spiked so dramatically that the stone began to soften at the periphery of the effect.

The red light was so intense that it cast harsh shadows across the wasteland, creating a visual phenomenon where the Herald appeared to be wreathed in flames.

The aura pulsed in rhythm with the creature’s heartbeat, expanding and contracting like a living being.

The Herald’s body changed.

The exhaustion that had been visible in its movements vanished instantly. The hesitation that had characterized its earlier responses disappeared entirely.

What remained was a creature operating on pure survival instinct, all rational thought burned away in the crucible of desperation.

The Herald’s muscles tensed with power that exceeded what its injuries should have allowed, the life-burning trait overriding all conventional limitations and biological constraints.
