Chapter 93: Chapter 93: An Increasingly Difficult Path

First the roots, then the stem, and finally two tender leaves.

As she continued to channel her Superpower into the seedling in her hand, it began to slowly grow and stretch...

”This is pretty interesting, but I don’t know how to make it work like in the books.”

Nina Jacobs muttered to herself as she continued her research.

...

Counting from the day they left the shelter,

Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner had been living in the old house for nearly twelve days.

She had burned almost all the zombies on the nearby main roads to a crisp.

Her Fire Element Superpower and Earth Element Superpower had both improved.

Wayne Warner’s close combat skills and Strength Element Superpower had also become much stronger.

Therefore, Nina Jacobs decided it was time to head back to the shelter and check on things.

If she remembered correctly, the shelter should have received orders from their superiors and started discussing the construction of a base.

”I know you like it here.”

”We’ll have other chances to come back.”

As Nina Jacobs was leaving, Wayne Warner kept staring at the old house’s front door.

He looked incredibly reluctant to leave.

Nina Jacobs knew Wayne Warner must have eaten his fill during their time in the old house.

No one would dislike a place with all sorts of delicious food.

Even after they got in the car, Wayne Warner kept his head turned, looking back.

This made Nina Jacobs not know whether to laugh or cry.

”I’ll take you somewhere else. There should be plenty of food there.”

Nina Jacobs’s words finally got a reaction out of Wayne Warner.

Next, she had to complete [Free Shopping Spree Mission 14].

Nina Jacobs had discovered that the supply locations designated by the Free Shopping Spree missions were always in hard-to-find places.

The shelter also sent teams to different supply points every day to collect resources.

But they had never overlapped with her mission locations.

Therefore, Nina Jacobs concluded that the supply points designated by the Free Shopping Spree were all resources that would eventually be destroyed.

Mission 14 was in an office building.

The building was the headquarters of a famous snack food chain.

Perhaps because everything from development to product selection was done at the headquarters, few outsiders knew there was a large warehouse inside this office building.

Nina Jacobs only realized this after she arrived.

The office building’s main entrance was shut tight.

There were almost no zombies inside.

However, there were plenty outside.

Including a fair number of ”tails” following their car.

Nina Jacobs didn’t get out of the car immediately. Instead, she slammed on the gas and started doing laps around the office building.

With each lap, she mowed down dozens of zombies.

After a few laps, many of the zombies were dead or injured. Many of those she had run over weren’t dead, but they could no longer get back up.

Only two mutated zombies remained completely unscathed, and were even looking for a chance to attack.

Only then did Nina Jacobs get out of the car with Wayne Warner.

A long, burning whip appeared in Nina Jacobs’s hand.

Every crack of the whip took off a zombie’s head.

This immense Attack Power made the two mutated zombies hesitate to advance.

Nina Jacobs seized the opportunity, conjuring several Fireballs and smashing them into the two mutated zombies.

The Fireballs didn’t look very big, but the moment they touched the zombies’ bodies, they burst into a frenzy of flames as if doused in gasoline.

The two mutated zombies struggled to retreat, but Nina Jacobs teleported behind them and bound them together with her Fire Whip.

ROAR!

The flames on the Fire Whip instantly engulfed them.

”This whip is really easy to use.”

Nina Jacobs retracted her Fire Whip. The two mutated zombies, long since dead, had been reduced to human-shaped charcoal and collapsed to the ground.

Just then, Wayne Warner finished off the remaining regular zombies, kicking their heads in one by one.

”Good work. Wait for me here for a bit.”

Nina Jacobs closed the office building’s main doors, then found a clean spot on the first floor for Wayne Warner to sit and wait for her.

Of course, she didn’t forget to leave him some food.

She quickly found the supply storage area.

Almost the entire third floor was a warehouse.

”There’s so much.”

As Nina Jacobs collected the supplies, she grew a little curious.

There were no zombies in this office building, and the water and power were out, so why would all these supplies be destroyed within a month?

’Is it because of a firefight between people?’

Nina Jacobs didn’t dwell on it, instead quickly collecting box after box of supplies.

The supplies were mostly snacks and instant meals, with a good amount of dairy products and drinks as well.

There were also canned ham, nuts, and dried fruit, among other things.

Many were things Nina Jacobs had eaten before.

Besides the large warehouse area, the section near the stairs was lined with rows of shelves.

This was probably a place for employees to conveniently select products for reviews and live streams.

Nina Jacobs left nothing behind, collecting everything, including some toys, into her storage space.

[Mission ”Free Shopping Spree Mission 14” complete. Rewards have been distributed to the host.]

After hearing the mission completion notice, Nina Jacobs went back downstairs.

”What are you doing?”

When Nina Jacobs got downstairs, she found Wayne Warner washing his hands with the two bottles of drinking water she had left for him.

Wayne Warner didn’t answer.

He just washed his hands clean and walked back to where he was sitting.

When she saw the foul-smelling mush hammered into a pulp on the table, Nina Jacobs’s breath caught in her throat.

It was the corpse of a Zombie Rat!

More shocking than the fact that Wayne Warner had just smashed a Zombie Rat to death with his bare fists was the fact that a Zombie Rat had appeared here at all.

She instantly understood why the supplies here would be destroyed soon.

It was most likely related to the Zombie Rats.

If there was one Zombie Rat, there were probably more nearby.

Humans had been contaminated by the zombie virus, and the animal kingdom was no different.

In fact, the contamination in the animal kingdom was even more severe, with most species having gone extinct.

After zombies came zombie animals.

Zombie animals also attacked humans, preying on them for food.

”It didn’t bite you, did it?”

Nina Jacobs inspected Wayne Warner’s hand.

Wayne Warner must have used Strength Enhancement; there were no wounds on his hand.

”None of this food is edible anymore.”

”Let’s get out of here.”

Nina Jacobs had no desire to encounter something as troublesome as a Zombie Rat.

”Okay.”

Wayne Warner glanced at the remaining food that had been spattered with filth, but ultimately followed her.

After they had driven for some distance, Nina Jacobs suddenly noticed a raging fire on the road ahead.

The ”clear” indicator on the system map was gone.

Although the map had already plotted another route, it required a detour of more than twenty kilometers.

”No choice. Looks like we have to take the detour.”

The roads in the apocalypse would only get harder to travel.

Just as Nina Jacobs was about to turn the car around, she saw several people running out of the flames ahead.

They were waving their arms frantically at her.

She thought they were looking for help, but because she had been keeping her ”Five Senses Enhancement” active out of fear of Zombie Rats, Nina Jacobs heard their shouts.

”Run! Don’t look back, there’s a monster!”

”AHHH!! There’s another one up ahead, looking to get killed! Don’t come this way, AHHH!”

”Hey! You up ahead! The road is destroyed, you can’t get through here!”

”It’s over, it’s all over...”

’Monster?’

Hearing their words, Nina Jacobs decisively turned the car around.

She didn’t know what kind of monster they were talking about, but it definitely wasn’t anything good.

The system had already determined this road was impassable, so she certainly wasn’t going to charge ahead.

”Did the person in that car hear us? They’re turning around!”

”No way. They’re probably just afraid we’ll latch onto them.”

”Waaaah, who cares about them! Why don’t we split up? Maybe one or two of us will survive!”

”It’s too late! There’s more than one of those monsters!”
