After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Who’s Scaring Who?

Early morning.

The City D shelter issued an important announcement.

All Superpower Users were to register at the window on the first floor.

Although the purpose of the registration wasn’t announced, the status of Superpower Users seemed to have changed at that moment.

Some said Superpower Users would receive guaranteed provisions.

Others said Superpower Users would be assigned to better rooms.

Still others said Superpower Users would be recruited by the military and sent out to kill zombies.

In any case, registering wasn’t a bad thing for Superpower Users.

Suddenly, the registration window was swamped, and Superpower Users formed long lines in the first-floor hall.

’So many people have already awakened Superpowers?’

Wyatt Jacobs stood not far away, a mixture of envy and contempt in his eyes.

’What’s the use of them awakening their Superpowers so early?’

’In the end, I’ll just easily surpass them anyway.’

’In just a few more days, I’ll awaken my Superpower too.’

Wyatt Jacobs suddenly recalled how in his past life, he too had been this envious of Superpower Users.

At first, Liam Grant and Renee Strong hadn’t paid him much attention, often ignoring him completely.

Only Nina Jacobs had asked him what kind of Superpower he would want if he awakened one.

His answer at the time was a Gold Element Superpower.

And sure enough, he later awakened a Gold Element Superpower.

After becoming a Superpower User, his status in the team rose steadily.

No one ordered him to do trivial tasks anymore.

Except for Nina Jacobs.

She would make him run all over the place delivering things and intel, all under the guise of training his stamina.

It even cut into his time to practice his Superpower...

But in this life, everything was different.

Simon Abbott valued him highly.

Liam Grant also thought highly of him.

Even when Liam’s parents had nagged him for lazing around at home all day, Liam had furiously shut them down.

Because they all knew he would one day become a formidable Gold Element Superpower User.

”Miss Jacobs, this way, please.”

At that moment, the voice from behind him made Wyatt Jacobs retreat into the shadows.

He saw two shelter security guards flanking Nina Jacobs, as if afraid she would try to escape.

’What kind of trouble did Nina get into?’

Wyatt Jacobs couldn’t help but become curious.

”She’s done for.”

Renee Strong emerged from the side, gloating.

”Is it because of that incident?” Wyatt Jacobs asked.

”Yes. Dawn Donovan already reported what she did,

and the mayor’s wife flew into a rage after hearing about it. She wants her to pay with her life.”

”Looks like she can’t escape after all.”

Wyatt Jacobs knew Nina Jacobs had arrived at the shelter two days ago.

He had been avoiding her precisely because he knew what happened with Keaton Sloan would surely bring her trouble.

The mayor of City D was already dead, but his wife, Melody Barron, still had influence.

Before the apocalypse, Melody Barron had also been active in political circles and was a former subordinate of Justin Lawson.

The person Nina Jacobs had killed was Melody Barron’s own nephew.

The person Melody Barron valued the most.

”How could she possibly get away?

For the past two days, Dawn Donovan was just recovering from her injuries and didn’t have time to deal with her.”

’Nina got to run free in the shelter for a few days. I’ve been waiting for today.’

”But I heard from James that her stepfather and Justin Lawson are old acquaintances,

and he’s the one in charge of the Superpower User registration this time,”

Wyatt Jacobs said.

”He’s just an ordinary man with no Superpower or connections.

I heard Mrs. Barron already has a candidate for that position—a Superpower User, at that,”

Renee Strong said dismissively.

Daniel Hale didn’t have a Superpower; he was just an ordinary person. In that regard, he was already outclassed.

”That’s true. The future belongs to Superpower Users.”

Wyatt Jacobs glanced pityingly in the direction Nina Jacobs had left.

’It can’t be helped. She’s the one who killed someone.’

’One wrong step leads to the abyss...’

Completely unaware that someone was waiting to see her become a laughingstock, Nina Jacobs was currently facing Dawn Donovan’s interrogation.

”I’ve already said everything I have to say.

What else do you want to ask?”

Nina Jacobs sat in the chair, her expression calm.

”Every word you say now will be officially recorded.

There’s always a price for killing, then and now,”

Dawn Donovan said bluntly.

”Rescue Team Regulations, Article Seven,”

Nina Jacobs reminded her.

”What did you say?” Dawn Donovan looked at Nina Jacobs in confusion.

”You don’t even know that?

Want me to spell it out for you?”

Nina Jacobs smiled and continued:

”Rescue Team Regulations, Article Seven: When encountering an emergency, rescue team members must prioritize the safety of the people. They must not infringe upon the interests of others, nor may they act in a way that endangers the safety of others.”

”As a captain of the rescue team, Keaton Sloan himself violated four of the rescue team’s regulations.

I acted in self-defense because of this. Is there anything wrong with that?”

Nina Jacobs’s words left Dawn Donovan temporarily speechless.

”That’s just your side of the story. I believe that under those circumstances, Captain Sloan’s impromptu decision was made out of necessity.

You didn’t have to kill him!”

Dawn Donovan retorted after composing herself.

”Oh? Is that so?

But I had no choice but to kill him, either.

If someone led zombies to your doorstep, would you roll out the welcome mat?”

Nina Jacobs almost laughed. Dawn Donovan was clearly trying to force her to confess.

’I just don’t know who’s backing her.’

”You’re just twisting things to suit your argument!”

Dawn Donovan couldn’t help but slam the table.

At the same time, the interrogation room door was suddenly breached.

To be more precise, the person outside had lifted the entire door off its hinges.

Wayne Warner stood in the doorway, looking warily at Dawn Donovan in the interrogation room.

”Who are you? What do you want?”

Dawn Donovan quickly called for two security guards.

”Sorry, this is my friend. He’s a Strength Element Superpower User,

and you were too loud just now and scared him,”

Nina Jacobs said with a look of dissatisfaction.

’I scared him?’

Dawn Donovan was about to explode with anger.

’The guy literally ripped the door off its hinges.’

’And who’s scaring who here?!’

”It’s alright, Wayne Warner.

I’ll be out in a bit. You can wait for me outside,”

Nina Jacobs said to Wayne Warner, who was blocking the doorway.

Wayne Warner nodded, then placed the door panel back in its original position.

”You still think you’re going back?”

Dawn Donovan found it somewhat amusing.

”You killed someone, and that’s against the law!”

”May I ask, Miss Donovan, what law has she broken?”

BANG.

The door panel, which had just been precariously placed by Wayne Warner, was once again kicked to the ground.

Chester Pearson walked in with his hands in his pockets.

”Tsk, what a crappy door.”

Chester Pearson propped the door panel up with one hand, a look of disdain on his face.

”Ahem, I heard you brought Nina Jacobs in.

Your illness cleared up that fast?”

Seeing that Nina Jacobs was fine, Chester Pearson simply pulled up a chair and sat down next to her.

”Captain Pearson, this...

After all, the person who died was one of our own from the rescue team, and a captain at that.

I was just bringing her in for routine questioning,”

Dawn Donovan said.

”I’ve already asked what needed to be asked,

and I’ve already filed the necessary reports. She did nothing wrong.

Just let her go.”

Chester Pearson yawned; he had been in meetings almost all night.

”I’m sorry, Captain Pearson,

I can’t let her go. Someone must be held accountable for Captain Sloan’s death.”

Hearing Dawn Donovan’s words, Chester Pearson scoffed.

”Held accountable? Do you know how many people from our rescue team die in a single day?

Why don’t you go hold someone accountable for them?

Now you’re fixated on holding her responsible. Do you have any idea how many people she’s saved?”

Nina Jacobs glanced at Chester Pearson in surprise.

She hadn’t expected Chester Pearson to speak up for her.

”Her accomplishments are one thing,

but I don’t know who she saved. Captain Pearson, you should head back for now.”

Dawn Donovan said, steeling herself as she remembered the orders she’d been given.

”She saved me and all the members of Team 6.

Does that count?”

There was another loud crash as the door panel was sent crashing to the floor again.

”...”
