The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 21: Mun Lao and Vumala

The oil lamp had burned low, casting long, trembling shadows across the stone walls of the Beifong guest chamber. Katara sat on the edge of the bed, twisting a strip of cloth between her fingers. She hadn’t slept. The air in Gaoling felt heavy, settled, like the earth itself was holding its breath.

“You know something’s off,” Katara said quietly, not looking at Zuko. “I could feel it when you were in the room.”

Zuko stood by the window, looking out at the moonlit gardens. His profile was sharp in the dim light, the line of his scar pale against the dark. “She’s smarter than her parents think. She’s been listening through the floor her whole life.”

“What are we go to do with her Zuko?” Katara’s voice was frayed at the edges. “Really. Not the story about land deeds and trade routes. Why Gaoling?”

He didn’t answer right away. The silence stretched, thick with things unsaid. Then he turned, his golden eyes catching the lamplight. “I told you already.”

He stopped.

A flicker crossed his face, a twitch at the corner of his eye. He brought a hand up to his temple, fingers pressing hard.

“Zuko?”

“It’s nothing,” he muttered, but his voice was strained. “A headache.”

Katara stood, taking a step toward him. “You’ve been pushing too hard. Ever since the North, you’ve been…”

He gasped.

It was a short, sharp sound, like the air had been punched from his lungs. His eyes went wide, unseeing. Then his whole body went rigid. His back arched, tendons standing out in his neck. He didn’t make a sound, but his jaw was locked so tight Katara heard his teeth grind.

“Zuko!”

She lunged forward, but before she could reach him, his knees buckled. He crashed to the floor, convulsing, limbs jerking in violent, uncontrolled spasms. His head struck the stone with a sickening crack.

Katara dropped beside him, her hands glowing with water already, but there was no wound to heal, nothing but the seizure tearing through him. She tried to hold him still, but the force of it was terrifying. His eyes were rolled back, white and sightless.

Then, as suddenly as it started, it stopped.

He went limp.

His breathing was shallow, ragged. Katara cradled his head, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Zuko? Can you hear me?”

His eyelids fluttered.

But he did not wake.

---

The blackness was absolute.

Not the dark of a room at night. Not the deep of the ocean. This was a void. A nothingness so complete it felt like being erased.

Zuko floated or stood, or neither. There was no ground. No sky. No direction.

“About time.”

The voice was dry, weathered, like stone worn smooth by wind. It came from everywhere and nowhere.

Zuko turned, or thought he turned, and there he was.

Yogan.

He looked older than Zuko remembered from his last fragmented vision. Middle-aged, his face lined not with weakness but with endurance. His hair was still dark but threaded with gray, pulled back from a sharp, focused face. His clothes were a patchwork, a tunic of Earth Kingdom green, trousers of Water Tribe blue, a Fire Nation red sash, and over it all, the loose, layered sleeves of an Air Nomad. He looked like a map of a world that no longer existed.

In his hands, he spun a bo staff slowly, the wood whispering through the void.

“Where…” Zuko’s voice sounded hollow, distant.

“Where do you think?” Yogan didn’t stop spinning the staff. His eyes were fixed on Zuko, grey and weary and urgent. “The same place you’ve been before. Only this time, I called you. We don’t have long.”

Zuko tried to steady himself. “Why?”

“Because he’s here.” Yogan’s voice dropped low. “In your world. Walking it. Breathing its air. Mun Lao.”

The name hung in the nothingness, heavy as lead.

“Who is he?” Zuko asked.

“He was Wan’s brother in arms,” Yogan said, and for a moment, the spinning staff stilled. “And then his greatest enemy. He was there when the Lion Turtles still gave fire. He was there when Raava chose Wan. And it broke something in him.”

Yogan’s gaze grew distant, looking through Zuko into a memory ten thousand years old.

“I met him when I was nineteen. I didn’t even know what I was yet. Just barely a monk who could bend air and… sometimes, when I was scared or angry, water would move without me meaning it to.” He shook his head slightly. “I was in a city called Daiyo. There was a warlord. A monster. I fought him. And when I won… Mun Lao stepped out of the shadows.”

Yogan’s knuckles whitened on the staff.

“He looked at me with these… golden eyes. Burning. Not with rage. With recognition. He said, ‘So. You’ve come.’ He knew what I was before I did. He called me ‘Wan’s shadow.’ And then he tried to burn me alive.”

Zuko felt a coldness seeping into his bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the void.

“His fire wasn’t normal fire,” Yogan continued, his voice tight. “It was blue-white. Hotter than anything I’d ever felt. It didn’t just burn, it unmade. I barely escaped. I entered the Avatar State that day. Not to win. To survive.”

He looked back at Zuko, his expression grim.

“He isn’t trying to kill the Avatar, Zuko. He’s trying to replace the cycle. He serves something older. Something that was imprisoned not long after Raava and Vaatu danced. A spirit called Vumala.”

The name echoed, vibrating through the emptiness like a struck bell.

“Vumala is a monkey spirit,” Yogan said. “But not like the tricksters you know. Older. Hungrier. It doesn’t want to cause chaos. It wants to consume possibility. To end stories before they’re told. And it’s been trapped for millennia, waiting for a crack in its prison.”

He stepped closer, and for the first time, Zuko saw real fear in the ancient Avatar’s eyes.

“A guru once told me that Vumala would escape when an Avatar reset the cycle. A full rebirth. A severing of the past. That was supposed to be centuries from now. Maybe longer. But things… are shifting. Happening too soon. The walls are thin. The prison is weak. And Mun Lao isn’t waiting for destiny. He’s making his own.”

Zuko’s mind raced. Reset the cycle. A full rebirth. Only one Avatar in all of history had ever…

His blood went cold.

“Reset the cycle?” Zuko whispered. “Only one Avatar ever did that.”

Yogan tilted his head, waiting.

Zuko looked into those ancient, tired eyes and said the name he’d carried from another world, a name that belonged to a future that wasn’t supposed to be yet.

“You’re talking about Korra.”
