The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 35: The Last Embers in the Woods

The revelry of Gansu grew distant, muffled by the thick twilight of the surrounding forest. Mun Lao walked not on the packed-earth road, but just inside the tree line, his red robes whispering against ferns and low-hanging branches. The noise of celebration was an irritant, a hollow echo of a peace he found contemptible. Out here, the air was cleaner. It smelled of damp earth, pine, and the lingering chill of coming night. It smelled real.

He was considering his next move. The town had been a useful reconnaissance. The barmaid, Lien, was a physical possibility but a spiritual dead end. He needed to cast a wider net. Perhaps a smaller village, where loneliness was a more common crop. Or a traveling caravan, where rootlessness could be exploited.

A flicker of orange light caught his eye, deep within a dense thicket of hawthorn and young spruce. Not the steady glow of a campfire, but a quick, jerky flash. Then another. A sputter of yellow, followed by a hiss and a muffled curse.

Mun Lao went perfectly still. His ancient senses, attuned to the flow of energy far beyond mortal sight, prickled. That was not the light of a lantern or a torch.

That was the guttering, undisciplined spasm of a firebending attempt.

Interest, sharp and cold, cut through his musings. He moved toward the light, his steps making no sound on the soft forest floor. He was a shadow within shadows.

Pushing aside a screen of thorny branches, he beheld a scene of pathetic fascination.

In a small, hidden clearing, a group of five figures huddled. They were young men, dressed in rags that might have once been Earth Kingdom greens or the rough homespun of peasants. Their faces were smudged with dirt and a kind of desperate hunger. In the center of their circle, one of them, a lanky youth with frantic eyes, held his hands outstretched toward a small pile of kindling. A tiny, sickly flame danced on his palm, a flame that sputtered, choked on its own lack of conviction, and died with a puff of grey smoke.

“Focus, Dai!” another one hissed, a stocky fellow with the bearing of a former soldier. “It’s not about your fists, it’s about your breath! Like the master said!”

“I am breathing!” Dai snapped back, his voice tight with frustration. “It’s not working! Maybe the master was wrong about me. Maybe I just don’t have it.”

“We all have it,” a third voice said, quieter, trying to soothe. “We have the spark. We just have to… to fan it.”

Mun Lao couldn’t help himself. A dry, crackling chuckle escaped his lips, shattering the tense quiet of the clearing.

Five heads whipped toward the sound. In the dim light, their eyes widened in panicked surprise. They saw an old man in red robes, his face obscured by deep shadow, standing at the edge of their sanctuary like a forgotten idol.

“Hey, you!” the stocky one, the apparent leader, barked, stepping forward, his hands curling into fists that held no heat. “This is a private camp! Get lost!”

Mun Lao just smiled, a slow, unnerving stretching of his lips. “Private? I see no walls. Only… children playing with matches they don’t understand.”

His voice, low and layered with an immeasurable age, seemed to suck the warmth from the clearing. The young men shuffled back, their bravado evaporating.

“Who are you?” Dai, the failed firebender, asked, his voice trembling.

“A passerby,” Mun Lao said, taking a single, deliberate step forward. The group flinched as one. “A student of fire. And what I see before me… is an insult to its name.”

He gestured with a contemptuous flick of his wrist toward the dead kindling. “That… guttering spasm? That is not firebending. That is a death rattle. Fire is not a pet to be coaxed. It is a master to be obeyed, a storm to be harnessed. You treat it like a shy puppy.”

His words, dripping with a disdain that felt older than the trees, broke their paralysis with fear.

“Run!” the leader yelled.

They scattered like rabbits, crashing heedlessly through the undergrowth, abandoning their meager camp in a heartbeat. The sound of their frantic escape faded quickly into the deep woods.

Mun Lao stood alone in the clearing. He threw his head back and laughed. It was a harsh, barking sound, devoid of true mirth, the sound of a god watching ants try to build a cathedral.

“AMATEURS!” he bellowed after them, his voice carrying through the silent trees. “Worthless, mewling children! Is this what remains of the fire-will in this world?!”

His anger, a cold, ancient thing, ignited. It was not just at these pathetic stragglers. It was at the century of failed war, at the weak peace, at the entire diminished, soft age.

He didn’t move his legs. He simply willed the world to change around him.

The air in the clearing shimmered with sudden, violent heat. From the soles of his feet, a vortex of crimson flame erupted, not the orange-yellow of common fire, but a deep, blood-red conflagration that roared with the sound of a thousand furnaces. It surrounded him completely, a blinding, swirling tornado of incarnate fury that scorched the earth in a perfect circle and set the leaves of the surrounding trees curling and blackening without ever touching them.

Then, with a sound like a thunderclap sucked inward, the fire-tornado vanished.

Mun Lao was gone.

Two hundred yards away, the five young men stumbled to a gasping halt in a small gully, clutching stiches in their sides, their terror a tangible scent in the dark.

“What… what was that?” Dai panted.

“A spirit,” the stocky leader, named Chey, whispered, his face pale. “An angry forest spirit. We shouldn’t have been bending here. We disturbed it.”

“It said it was a student of fire,” another pointed out, his voice small.

Before they could debate further, the air in front of them rippled. Heat washed over them, and from nothing, the red-robed man reappeared. He stood calmly, not a hair out of place, as if he had simply stepped through a curtain they couldn’t see.

They screamed, scrambling back against the muddy bank of the gully.

“I thought the Fire Nation was supposed to have retreated,” Mun Lao said, his voice conversational now, which was somehow worse than his earlier contempt. “Ordered home by their wise new Fire Lord. Yet here I find little sparks, hiding in the Earth Kingdom dirt.”

Chey, summoning a last shred of courage, pushed himself to his feet. “We’re not Fire Nation!”

Mun Lao’s eyebrow lifted infinitesimally. “No? You bend fire. Or attempt to. Clumsily, pathetically, but the intent is there. The spark, as your friend said, however damp.”

“We’re… we’re something else,” Dai said from the ground.

“Who are you, old man?” Chey demanded, his voice shaking. “What do you want?”

“An old man with questions,” Mun Lao replied. He took a step closer, and they shrank back. “You are not Fire Nation. Interesting. So the great, homogenizing empire failed even in this? It left behind embers. Or… collected them?” He looked them over, truly seeing them now. Their rags were not just poor; they were of mismatched origins. One had a sleeve that might have been from a Earth Kingdom militia uniform. Another wore trousers that had the cut of a Fire Nation peasant. They were mongrels. Cast-offs.

“Chey, what do we do?” one of the younger ones whimpered.

Chey’s eyes darted, looking for an escape that didn’t exist. The old man had appeared from fire itself. They were outmatched in ways they couldn’t comprehend. “The… the master,” he said finally, the word a surrender. “The master should decide.”

A slow, genuine smile touched Mun Lao’s lips. It was not a pleasant sight. “A master. Of course. There is always a master. Even of such… modest talents.” He infused the last words with a withering pity. “Who is this master of yours? Another lost spark, teaching you to shiver in the dark?”

Chey’s jaw tightened. “He’s a real firebender. A powerful one. He found us. He’s teaching us. He says we have a right to the flame, even if the Nation rejects us.”

Rejects us. The words were a key turning in a lock. Mun Lao’s interest solidified from curiosity into a strategic calculation. Outcasts. Rejects. Those spurned by the very nation that should have claimed them. Their souls would be full of the very things he needed: resentment, longing, a desperate need to belong to something powerful.

“A noble sentiment,” Mun Lao purred. “Take me to him.”

“We can’t just…”

“You can,” Mun Lao interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that vibrated in their bones. “Or I will find him myself. And when I do, I will ask him why he wastes his time on kindling that will never catch. Your choice.”

The threat was unspoken but absolute. They had seen the tornado of red fire. They knew, on a primal level, that this being before them was to their “master” as a volcano was to a candle.

Chey exchanged a hopeless look with his comrades. Finally, he nodded, defeat in every line of his body.

“He’s camped deeper in the woods. Follow us.”

They led him in silence, a somber procession. Mun Lao followed, a red shadow at their heels, his mind already weaving new threads into his grand design. A renegade firebender master, gathering Earth Kingdom outcasts with the spark? This was not a loose end. This was a potential tool. A weapon that already hated the world that had abandoned it.

The perfect kind of weapon for a being who intended to un-write that world altogether.
