The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 30: The Engine’s Song

The sea two days southwest of Gaoling was a vast, gray expanse, heaving under a sky the color of tarnished silver. The air tasted of salt and distant rain, and a cold, persistent wind sliced across the decks of the Silent Shadow, Zuko’s sleek, black-iron warship. It cut through the water not with the proud, fire-belching arrogance of a standard Fire Nation vessel, but with a predatory silence, its engines a deep, muffled throb beneath the waves.

On the foredeck, Zuko stood like a figurehead carved from obsidian and scar tissue. His hands were clenched on the cold railing, his gold eyes fixed on the southwest horizon. The wind tore at his dark hair and simple tunic, but he didn’t feel the cold. He felt the clock in his bones, ticking down to a zero only he could hear.

Two days. Two days since Gaoling, since extracting Toph from her gilded cage with the efficiency of a surgical strike. The escape had been clean. The Silent Shadow was now pushing hard into the open waters of the Earth Kingdom’s southwestern sea, a realm of forgotten currents and sailor’s whispers.

Behind him, the ship lived its muted life. Katara was below, a quiet, concerned presence he could feel like a pressure change. Toph was on the aft deck, a knot of furious adaptation, learning to listen to the metal world. And up on the bridge, Ensign Lee was a statue of focused anxiety, watching engine gauges like they were enemy ships.

Zuko didn’t turn at the sound of footsteps. He knew the rhythm.

“You’ve been standing here for an hour,” Katara said, coming to stand beside him. Her blue eyes searched his profile. “What changed in Gaoling? You’ve been… driven. Like something’s chasing us.”

“Something is,” he said, his voice barely above the wind. It was the truth, stripped of details. “The pieces are moving faster than I anticipated. We no longer have the luxury of patience.”

“What pieces?” she pressed, her frustration evident. “You told Toph the world is ending. You tell me we’re hunting legends. You’re burning the engines out to get there. Which story is true, Zuko?”

“All of them,” he said, finally looking at her. The weariness in his eyes was real, but so was the unshakeable core of resolve. “The legends are real. The ending is possible. And the only way to stop it is to reach the legend before the ending reaches us. That’s all I can tell you.”

It was a perimeter. A line in the sand. She stared at him, her face a conflict of trust and hurt. She saw the wall, solid as ever.

“You keep saying ‘I,’” she whispered. “But we’re here. We’re on this ship. We’re running. Don’t I get to know what from?”

“You will,” he said, and it was a promise he intended to keep, when the truth wouldn’t sound like madness. “When knowing helps instead of paralyzes. Right now, I need you to trust that every hour I gain is a thread of hope I don’t intend to waste.”

She held his gaze for a long moment, then looked away at the churning sea. “I hate it when you talk like a general.”

“I am a general,” he said quietly. “And the war just got bigger.”

He left her there, the unspoken words hanging in the salt air between them. He had a more immediate battle to fight—one of coal, iron, and steam.

---

The heart of the ship was a vision of controlled inferno. The boiler room was a long, low-ceilinged cavern of oppressive heat and roaring noise. The air swam with the smell of hot metal, coal dust, and oil. Two massive boilers, like iron bellies, glowed a sullen red behind their firebox doors. Pipes thicker than a man’s torso snaked across the ceiling, trembling with pent-up steam. The chief engineer, a grizzled old salt named Hiro, wiped sweat from his soot-streaked brow and glared at a pressure gauge as if it had personally insulted him.

Zuko descended the iron ladder into this hell, followed by Rin. Lee was already there, looking out of place in his neat uniform, scribbling furiously on a tablet.

“…impossible, Ensign!” Hiro was shouting over the din. “She’s at ninety-three percent! The relief valves are singing! You push her harder, she’ll come apart and send us all to the spirit world in a cloud of shrapnel!”

“The Prince has ordered an increase,” Lee said, his voice tense but firm.

“Then the Prince can come down here and kiss his boilers goodbye himself!”

“I’m here,” Zuko said, his voice cutting through the mechanical roar. He stepped into the circle of flickering lamplight, stripping off his outer tunic. His scar, in the hellish glow, looked like a crack in porcelain. “Report.”

Hiro paled, snapping to attention. “Y-Your Highness! I meant no disrespect, sir, but the facts are the facts! The tolerances are…”

“The tolerances are theoretical limits set by men who built ships for patrol, not pursuit,” Zuko interrupted. He walked to the nearest boiler, ignoring the blistering heat radiating from its hide. He placed a hand on a steam conduit, feeling the deep, frantic vibration. “You’re running a closed-loop system with a single-stage expansion. Inefficient. You’re losing potential energy as waste heat and vibration.”

Hiro stared, his mouth slightly open. Lee’s stylus paused over his tablet. Even Rin raised an eyebrow.

“The… the system is standard Fire Navy design, sir,” Hiro stammered.

“It’s a conservative design for fleet uniformity and ease of repair,” Zuko countered, his eyes scanning the network of pipes and valves with an unnervingly knowledgeable gaze. “We are not a fleet. We are one ship. And we need to think in terms of pressure differentials and volumetric flow, not manual protocols.”

He turned to Lee. “The secondary condensers. Are they linked in series or parallel?”

Lee blinked, his mind racing through schematics. “Series, sir. The output of the port condenser feeds the starboard intake to maintain balance.”

“Wrong,” Zuko said, and there was no arrogance in it, just cold fact. “That’s a balancing choice for stable cruising. We need maximum throughput. We re-pipe them in parallel. It will increase thermal stress on the feed pumps, but it will give us a fifteen percent boost in steam availability to the turbines.”

The boiler room fell silent save for the roar of the fires. Hiro looked at Zuko as if he’d started speaking ancient Air Nomad. Lee’s face was a mask of stunned recalculation.

“Your Highness,” Lee said carefully, “that’s… not a modification in any engineering manual. The risk of backflow or unequal pressure…”

“Is mitigated by installing sprung check valves here, and here,” Zuko said, pointing to two junctions on a mental schematic only he could see. Victor’s knowledge of 19th-century steam engineering, of principles these men had never conceptualized, flowed through him. “We cannibalize the springs from the secondary anchor winches. They’re over-specified for the load.”

Rin let out a low whistle. “You’ve been holding out on us, Prince. When did you become a boiler-room sage?”

Zuko ignored the question. “That’s for efficiency. For speed, we need more heat.” He turned to the coal chutes. “The fuel. It’s standard bituminous. High ash content. It burns dirty and slow.”

“It’s what we have, sir,” Hiro said, defensive.

“We have water,” Zuko said, his eyes glinting in the furnace light. “We superheat the steam further. Run the primary output through a coil inside the main firebox, before it reaches the turbines.”

This time, Hiro looked genuinely frightened. “Inside the firebox? The copper would melt! The pressure would—”

“Not copper. We don’t have the alloys. We use the existing primary delivery pipe, but we wrap it in a jacket of wet sand and clay, here in the upper chamber where the heat is intense but not direct flame. It’s a crude regenerative superheater. It will add maybe fifty degrees to the steam. That translates directly to expansion velocity in the turbines.”

He spoke with a certainty that brooked no argument. It was the voice of a man who had seen it done, who understood the physics in his marrow. Lee was scribbling frantically, trying to keep up. Hiro just looked defeated and awestruck.

“We can strip non-essential metal for the check valves, the officer’s galley furnishings, spare chains,” Zuko continued, his mind racing ahead. “Lee, you’ll oversee the condenser re-piping. Hiro, you and your men build the clay jackets for the superheater coil. I want it done in two shifts. No sleep until it’s operational.”

“The strain on the hull, sir…” Lee ventured, his engineer’s soul warring with his loyalty. “The torque from a significant power increase…”

“The hull is iron plate over a braced timber frame,” Zuko said. “Its weakness is in longitudinal flex. We reinforce the central keel beam by riveting the spare anchor chains along its length, distributed as moment arms. It will stiffen the ship, reduce whip, and allow the screws to bite harder without twisting us apart.”

He finally looked at them, his face sheened with sweat and smudged with soot already. “This isn’t a suggestion. This is the next phase of the mission. We are not just sailing to a location. We are outrunning a convergence of threats I cannot fully explain without sounding insane. Trust that I have seen the math, and the math says we need to be there yesterday.”

He locked eyes with Lee. “You asked why the hurry. The answer is: because the world’s clock is broken, and every second we lag is a second our enemies use to build a tomorrow we cannot survive in. This ship is our only advantage. We will make it fly, or we will die in its wreckage. Understood?”

Lee snapped a sharp salute, his earlier doubts burned away by the fierce, technical challenge and the absolute conviction in his prince’s voice. “Understood, sir.”

Hiro, after a moment, gave a grunt that was as close to agreement as he’d get. “We’ll make her sing, Your Highness. Or make her scream.”

“Good.” Zuko rolled up the sleeves of his undershirt. “Now get me a wrench and a diagram. I’m not leaving this room until the first check valve is fitted.”

As Lee and Hiro scrambled into action, shouting orders to the stunned stokers, Rin moved closer to Zuko, his voice low.

“You learned all that… in the Spirit World?” he murmured, his expression unreadable.

Zuko picked up a heavy spanner, its metal warm from the ambient heat. “I learned,” he said, not looking at Rin, “that there is always a way to push harder. To burn brighter. Even if it risks burning out. The alternative is to be left in the dark.”

He moved towards the first pipe junction, his mind already partitioning itself. One part, Prince Zuko, focused on the wrench in his hand, the feel of the metal, the heat on his skin. The other part, Victor, soared through libraries of stolen knowledge, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mechanical stress calculus, plucking solutions from a world away and grafting them onto this roaring, primitive machine.

On the deck above, Toph felt the ship’s vibrations shift. It started as a discordant shudder, a groan of protesting metal. Then, slowly, it began to harmonize. The deep thrum of the engines grew sharper, more urgent. The groan of the hull settled into a tighter, more focused resonance. It was no longer a beast of burden plodding along. It was a beast being whipped.

She knelt, palms flat on the shuddering deck, a slow, fierce grin spreading across her face.

‘He’s not just driving it’, she thought, feeling the new song of stressed iron and unleashed steam. ‘He’s rewriting its soul.’

And for the first time, hurtling across a trackless sea towards an unimaginable destination, Toph Beifong felt something she hadn’t felt since she’d first connected with the badgermoles in the dark.

She felt the thrill of being in the presence of a different kind of earthbender. One who bent not rock, but destiny itself. And he was bending it fast.
