149: The ”students” of St George’s ParkThe England sky in October was a clear blue.

Lin Feng slowly drove his black BMW X5 along the country roads of Staffordshire.

The birch trees by the roadside had already donned their autumn colors, their golden leaves swaying gently in the breeze.

As the BMW X5 traveled along the country road, the massive outline of St George’s Park gradually became clear, its architectural lines stark and imbued with an inviolable majesty.

St George’s Park National Football Centre. The ’sanctuary’ of England football.

Lin Feng parked his car in the visitor’s parking lot.

He stepped out of the car.

The scent of grass mixed with the unique earthy smell of autumn brought a sense of tranquility.

The tranquility here stood in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Victoria Park Stadium.

Inside the reception hall, dozens of trainees from all over the country were checking in.

Most of them were professional players who had just retired.

Familiar faces flickered in and out of the crowd.

Former Premier League stars, former England internationals.

Stripped of their star aura, they were more like a group of old soldiers, their bodies perhaps rusty, but their souls still lingered on the pitch.

”Mr. Lin Feng?”

A staff member proactively walked over.

”Yes.”

”Welcome to St George’s Park. We have already prepared your materials.”

The staff member handed over a thick stack of study materials.

”Mr. Houllier specifically instructed that your theoretical foundation test can be waived.”

Several trainees nearby, hearing this, all turned their heads in unison.

Their gazes lingered on Lin Feng for a moment.

Their eyes held clear curiosity, and a hint of almost imperceptible disdain.

A middle-aged man with a small mustache sidled over.

”You’re that Hartlepool owner?”

His tone carried a typical Manchester accent.

”An Oriental businessman wants to get a coaching license? Interesting.”

Another tall forward also joined the conversation.

”I heard you’re on a nine-game winning streak in League One now? Good luck.”

”But League One and real football are still different.”

Lin Feng smiled faintly.

”Indeed, I still have a lot to learn.”

His humility surprised a few of them.

But the disdain in their eyes had not disappeared.

The man with the Manchester accent whispered to his companion, ”See? A guy who can’t even tell if a boot stud is round or flat is coming to teach us how to play football.”

The classroom was on the second floor of the main building.

The spacious and bright room was equipped with modern multimedia equipment.

A huge tactics board occupied an entire wall.

More than twenty trainees took their seats one after another.

He habitually sat at the back, taking in the entire layout of the classroom. It was a position where he could see everyone but not be easily noticed.

At exactly nine o’clock in the morning, the classroom door opened.

A man of short stature but imposing demeanor walked in.

Gérard Houllier.

This legendary French coach once achieved glory at Liverpool.

His tactical philosophy was rigorous and meticulous, with an almost harsh demand for detail.

”Gentlemen, welcome to St George’s Park.”

Houllier’s English carried a strong French accent.

”Over the next week, we will delve into the tactical evolution of modern football.”

His gaze swept over everyone present.

When his eyes rested on Lin Feng, they clearly lingered for a longer time.

”Today, we will start with a practical case study.”

Houllier walked to the tactics board.

”Assume you are facing a team with an ’inverted nine’ that possesses absolute speed and freedom.”

He drew a basic 4-4-2 formation on the tactics board.

”How do you effectively limit the opponent’s key player within this system?”

The classroom fell into a brief silence.

This question seemed simple but was actually complex.

The inverted nine tactic was still relatively new in 2007, and most coaches lacked a deep understanding of it.

The first to raise his hand was the former player with the Manchester accent.

”Man-marking. Assign a defensive midfielder to specifically track him.”

Houllier nodded.

”Traditional thinking. Any other ideas?”

”Double pivot rotation and cover.”

”Increase the number of center-backs, switch to a back three.”

”Have the full-backs tuck in, compressing the central space.”

One answer after another was proposed.

All were conventional solutions based on player experience.

Houllier listened patiently, occasionally making notes on the tactics board.

But his expression was clearly not satisfied.

”Any other ideas?”

The classroom gradually quieted down.

Everyone’s eyes began to wander, searching for classmates who had not yet spoken.

Finally, all eyes focused on Lin Feng.

The silent Eastern face.

Houllier also noticed this phenomenon.

”Mr. Lin Feng, what are your thoughts?”

Lin Feng slowly stood up.

He did not rush to answer, but walked to the tactics board.

Picking up a marker, he first erased the existing marks on the board.

Then he began to draw a completely new pattern.

It was not a traditional formation diagram, but a complex geometric figure.

Four points formed a diamond, and within the diamond were several intersecting line segments.

”The key to limiting the ’inverted nine’ is not man-marking.”

Lin Feng’s voice was calm and clear.

”It is about cutting off his connection with the midfield and compressing his space to receive the ball.”

He continued drawing on the tactics board.

”Our four midfielders need to move as a cohesive unit, like a diamond chain.”

”Through anticipation and positional interchanging, we constantly maintain coverage and pressure on the ’inverted nine’s’ area of activity.”

The classroom was silent.

Only the rustling sound of the marker on the tactics board remained in the classroom. The former players, who had previously looked at him with disdain, now unconsciously leaned forward.

Lin Feng continued his explanation.

”When the opponent’s inverted nine drops back, our attacking midfielder follows him.”

”But it’s not simply man-marking; it’s about cutting off the back-pass options.”

”At the same time, both wide midfielders tuck in, forming a second line of defense.”

”The defensive midfielder then drops back, ready to deal with second balls.”

He drew complex arrows and movement routes on the tactics board.

”This way, we form a dynamic defensive triangle.”

”No matter where the inverted nine moves, he will face at least two defensive players pressing him.”

Houllier’s eyes grew brighter and brighter.

He walked to the tactics board and carefully studied Lin Feng’s diagram.

”Defensive triangle... This concept is very interesting.”

”Anything else?”

Lin Feng nodded.

”We also need to set pressing triggers.”

This was another completely new concept.

”When the opponent’s inverted nine receives the ball, we cannot let him turn comfortably.”

”We need to set high-intensity pressing points in specific areas.”

”For example, the top of the D-area, and the thirty-meter zones on the flanks.”

”Once the opponent receives the ball in these areas, immediately initiate collective pressing.”

Lin Feng turned to the group.

”This kind of pressing is not blind; it is targeted.”

”We want to force the opponent into our pre-set trap areas.”

He returned to the tactics board.

”According to data analysis, most inverted nines tend to move to the left side.”

”So we set stronger pressure on the right side, guiding him to move to the left side where we are ready.”

”Then complete the final encirclement on the left side.”

The entire explanation lasted fifteen minutes.

Lin Feng not only proposed new tactical concepts but also supported each argument with detailed data.

He talked about player running distance, physical allocation, psychological pressure, and so on.

This content far exceeded mainstream football knowledge in 2007.

When he put down the marker, the entire classroom was still immersed in shock.

Those former professional players who had initially looked down on him now had only admiration in their eyes.

They realized that this young man’s understanding of football far surpassed their imagination.

Houllier stared at the tactics board for a long time.

His fingers lightly tapped the table, a habitual gesture when he was thinking.

”Mr. Lin Feng, where does your theoretical foundation come from?”

”Learning and practice.”

Lin Feng’s answer was concise and humble.

”Football is constantly evolving, and our thinking also needs to keep pace with the times.”

Houllier slowly nodded.

He felt as if he had seen a glimpse of the future of football.

This feeling made him both excited and shocked.

After class, Houllier deliberately kept Lin Feng behind.

In the office, the two had a long private conversation.

Houllier was surprised to find that Lin Feng’s tactical theories were not only advanced, but his insights into player psychology, data analysis, and club management were all at a world-class level.

”Are you really just a businessman?”

Houllier asked, half-jokingly.

”I prefer to call myself a football enthusiast.”

Lin Feng replied with a smile.

”Business is just a means; football is the goal.”

When the conversation ended, Houllier’s eyes held deep shock.

That evening, he wrote in his report to UEFA:

”What I encountered today was not a student, but a future tactical revolutionary.”

”His ideas are at least ten years ahead of this era.”

As he left St George’s Park, Lin Feng encountered a small incident.

In the parking lot, a retired former England international chased after him.

He was a midfielder in his thirties who had performed well in the Premier League.

”Mr. Lin, wait.”

His tone was full of sincerity.

”Can I... can I intern at your club?”

Lin Feng stopped and turned to look at him.

”I want to see how your theories work in reality.”

The former international’s eyes held longing.

”I can do any job, assistant coach, youth coach, even equipment manager.”

”I just want to learn.”

Lin Feng was silent for a moment.

He could understand this longing, that pure love for football.

But he also knew it wasn’t the right time yet.

”Give me your contact information.”

Lin Feng finally said.

”When the time is right, I will contact you.”

On the way driving away from St George’s Park, Lin Feng’s mood was somewhat complex.

Today’s experience made him realize that his influence in the football world was growing.

But this also meant greater responsibility and challenges.

The [World-Class Club Development Platform] vibrated slightly in his mind.

”System Notification: Personal Prestige Value +50, unlocked new function ’Coach Network’.”

”You can use this function to recruit and cultivate excellent coaching talent.”

Lin Feng’s lips curved slightly upwards.

It seemed the system also acknowledged today’s performance.

As the sun set, the black BMW disappeared at the end of the country road.

Meanwhile, at St George’s Park, discussions about the mysterious Oriental man continued.
