Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

109: Brunton Park’s ”stifling” gameBrunton Park.

As teams from northern England, Carlisle United fans harbored a primal hostility towards Hartlepool, the ‘dragon crossing the river’.

They swore, with their crudest chants, to end their opponent’s winning streak here.

From the Sky Sports commentary booth, Martin Tyler’s voice echoed across the nation via television signals.

“Hartlepool United’s winning momentum faces a real test today.

Carlisle United has performed well this season, especially at their home ground, where their defense is exceptionally tenacious.”

“Let’s look at the starting lineups.

The home team, Carlisle United, has deployed a very pragmatic 5-3-2 defensive counter-attacking formation.

The goalkeeper is Irish international Kieran Westwood.

The three-center-back system is led by their captain, Kevin Gray, and the intention is crystal clear: to limit Jamie Vardy’s speed.”

“On Hartlepool United’s side, it’s still their rock-solid 4-3-3 main lineup.

Goalkeeper Schmeichel; defenders Walker, Shawcross, Nelson, Robson; midfielders Henderson, Sigurdsson, Tinkler; forwards Maloney, Vardy, Snodgrass.

They seem to want to use their most potent offense to dismantle their opponent’s carefully arranged defense.”

As soon as the whistle for the start of the match blew, Carlisle United’s players, like sappers receiving orders, quickly constructed two lines of defense in their own half.

They abandoned possession, gave up pressing high up the pitch, and everyone retreated to their own half, turning the thirty-meter area in front of the penalty box into a congested quagmire.

Hartlepool United’s players quickly felt this suffocation.

The ball was passed back and forth between Snodgrass and Maloney, but they could never find a route to penetrate forward.

In the 11th minute, Vardy attempted a forceful burst.

He had just received a through ball from Henderson, and before he could even pick up speed, three tall Carlisle defenders had converged on him from different directions like three walls, cleanly dispossessing him.

“Damn it!” Vardy picked himself up from the ground, spitting out some grass.

“Jamie, don’t rush!” Captain Tinkler shouted loudly, “The space will open up!”

But the space was slow to appear.

Sigurdsson took the ball in midfield; he habitually looked up to observe but found that every passing lane was occupied.

He could only choose to attempt a long-range shot himself, but the ball had barely flown a short distance before it hit the leg of a defender who bravely threw himself in the way, bouncing high into the air.

Henderson also tried a few times, with the same result.

Carlisle United’s players, using the most primitive, clumsy, yet effective method, completely shattered Hartlepool’s beautiful attacking system.

The game devolved into a dull offensive and defensive drill.

Hartlepool United’s possession rate once exceeded seventy-five percent, but their shots on goal were few and far between.

The players’ mentality began to show a visible impatience.

Passing errors started to increase, and unnecessary fouls also crept in.

In the VIP box, Lin Feng remained silent, quietly observing the situation on the field.

Behind him, Richard Arnold and John Stone seemed somewhat restless.

“Boss, they’re completely shameless,” John Stone couldn’t help but say.

“This isn’t football; this is rugby!”

Lin Feng ignored him; his consciousness was fully immersed in the holographic interface in his mind.

【Opponent Tactical Analysis: Catenaccio (Dense Defense Variant)】

【Defensive Core: Three-Center-Back System】

【Defensive Density: 9.2 (Extremely High)】

【Success Rate of Breakthrough (Conventional Penetration): 17%】

The cold data confirmed his judgment.

Conventional attacking methods were completely ineffective against this tin can parked in front of a bus.

A change was needed.

Lin Feng’s mind rapidly searched through the 【Future Tactics Library】.

One tactical module after another flashed by.

【Tiki-Taka Short Passing Penetration】... No, the opponent isn’t pressing; there’s no space.

【Long Ball Hoofing】... All three opposing center-backs are over 1.9 meters tall; there’s no advantage in aerial duels.

Finally, a tactical module settled in his mind.

【Tactical Name: Rib Zone Penetration Combined with Aerial Bombardment】

【Tactical Core: Utilize wide-ranging overlaps from full-backs to create a 2-on-1 local advantage with wingers in the Rib Zone, tearing open gaps in the defense.

Simultaneously, use set pieces and corner kicks to bring center-backs forward for aerial attacks.】

This was it.

Lin Feng picked up his encrypted phone and sent an instruction to Old John on the sidelines.

“Instruction D: Change the tempo.

Have both full-backs, Walker and Robson, push forward aggressively and combine with the wingers to attack the opponent’s rib zone.

Also, have Shawcross and Nelson ready to push forward and participate in corner kicks and set-piece attacks.”

On the sidelines, Old John, who had been anxiously pacing, felt his phone vibrate in his pocket.

He quickly glanced at it, then calmly walked to the touchline and made a forward-pressing gesture to Kyle Walker on the right and Andy Robson on the left.

Walker had been fuming, and seeing the instruction, his eyes lit up, and he immediately began to surge forward at high speed along the touchline.

In the 38th minute, the tactic began to work.

Snodgrass took the ball on the right, attracting two defenders.

He didn’t try to dribble through but instead laid the ball back.

Walker, who had surged forward at high speed, crossed the ball without stopping, and it bypassed the first defender, but in the penalty area, Carlisle captain Gray cleared it with a big kick.

Although it didn’t result in a shot, this attack gave Hartlepool’s players hope.

They began to execute the new tactic with more determination, and attacks down both flanks became vibrant.

Carlisle United’s defense, for the first time, showed disorganization after being stretched.

The whistle for the end of the first half blew amidst Hartlepool’s furious assault.

Zero-zero.

As the players walked off the field, their faces showed unwillingness and frustration.

They had dominated completely but were still unable to break open their opponent’s goal.

During halftime, a Sky Sports reporter stopped the Carlisle United manager, who was about to walk back to the dressing room, at the player’s tunnel entrance.

“Coach, in the first half, you successfully restricted Hartlepool’s offense.

Can you talk about your tactics?”

Carlisle’s manager, a rosy-faced Scottish Fat Man, gave a confident smile to the camera.

“Tactics? Nothing special.”

He patted the team badge on his chest.

“We just want to win more than them and are more disciplined.

Their so-called attacking geniuses are nothing to us.”

“We’ve found a way to stop them.”

He paused, then said to the camera, word for word.

“In the second half, we even have a chance to steal one.”
