Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

113: Space Hide and Seek and the Storm of Youth (Part 1)The deathly silence in the locker room was completely broken by Old John’s phrase, ’Space Hide-and-Seek’.

Tom Ince blinked, his fifteen-year-old face filled with confusion.

”Uncle Old John, what is Space Hide-and-Seek?”

Old John walked to the tactics board and pointed his finger at the paper covered with arrows.

”The rules of the game are very simple.”

His tone became relaxed, completely unlike the tension expected when trailing at halftime.

”Forget your positions! Each of you is a midfielder, and also a forward! Where the ball is, that’s where you run, but not to chase the ball, but to chase where the ball is going!”

Oliver Baker raised his hand, like a primary school student asking a question in class.

”What about our positions then? The coach always says to maintain positional awareness.”

”Positions?”

Old John laughed, a childlike cunning in his smile.

”In this game, positions are meant to be broken. You two, Oliver and Tom, don’t think of yourselves as offensive finishers, you are ’decoys’!”

He pointed at the two names on the tactics board.

”Your mission is to draw the opposing center-backs out of the penalty area, creating space for others to rush in! Imagine you are two clever little foxes, specifically responsible for leading those clumsy hounds away.”

Anthony Sweeney listened, subconsciously glanced at his teammates next to him, then nodded vigorously at Old John.

”I understand. The rest of us are the real hunters, taking advantage of the hounds being led away to raid their den.”

”Absolutely correct!”

Old John clapped his hands forcefully.

”This is the essence of ’Space Hide-and-Seek’. We don’t compete with them in strength, we don’t compete with them in physicality, we compete in intelligence, in running, in cooperation!”

Kyle Walker, as the captain of this youth army, stood up.

”But Old John, we already ran like this in the first half, but...”

”You ran incorrectly in the first half.”

Old John interrupted him.

”You were still thinking about traditional football, still looking for non-existent forwards. Now, I want you to completely forget tradition.”

He pulled a red pen from his pocket and quickly drew several circles on the tactics board.

”See these circles? These are the ’hide-and-seek’ hiding spots. This circle at the edge of the penalty area, the two circles in the half-spaces, and this most dangerous circle inside the penalty area.”

”Oliver and Tom, your mission is to use your runs to draw the opposing center-backs out of these circles. And you,” he looked at the other four midfielders, ”must sneak into these empty circles like ghosts.”

Liam Bridcutt raised his hand.

”What if they don’t follow out?”

”Even better!”

Old John’s eyes lit up.

”If they don’t follow, it means Oliver and Tom have space to take the ball and calmly organize the attack. If they do follow, it means the circles are empty, and you rush in!”

”This is a surefire game because the opponent can only make choices, and every choice benefits us.”

Someone started to subtly move their wrists and ankles, and the deflated feeling in the air unknowingly dissipated.

The young people, who had been dejected moments ago, began to show excited gleams in their eyes.

The word ”game” magically dissolved the pressure and fear in their hearts.

This was no longer a match they had to win, but an interesting intellectual game.

”There’s also a secret weapon.”

Old John said mysteriously.

”The most wonderful part of this game is passing. You need to pass the ball with one touch, without stopping it, like you do in training, making the ball move like lightning on the field.”

”Those old guys from Rotherham aren’t as fast as you, and their reactions aren’t as quick. When the ball moves faster than they can think, they’ll completely fall into disarray.”

Mark Donaldson, the eighteen-year-old lad, grinned.

”Just like the passing game we usually play?”

”Yes! That’s the game!”

Old John patted Donaldson’s shoulder.

”That passing game you have the most fun with in training, you’re going to play it in the match now.”

”Remember, this isn’t a football match, this is ’Space Hide-and-Seek’. Go enjoy this game, go make fools of those old guys twice your age!”

The whistle blew, and the second half began.

As soon as the second half whistle blew, the situation on the field overturned everyone’s expectations.

Just the change in psychological suggestion completely transformed these young people.

They were no longer nervous, no longer afraid of making mistakes, but walked onto the field with an almost playful ease.

The first moment Oliver Baker got the ball, he didn’t frantically look for a passing option like he did in the first half.

He remembered Old John’s words – I am the decoy, I need to lead the hounds away.

So he started running, not aimlessly, but deliberately running back, running to the wing, running in any direction that might confuse the opposing center-back.

Rotherham’s center-back, Ian Sharps, was indeed baffled by this strange running.

What exactly did this kid want to do?

Follow or not follow?

Tom Ince also began his ”decoy” performance.

The fifteen-year-old suddenly burst forth with cunning beyond his age; he sometimes retreated near the center circle, sometimes rushed towards the touchline, and then sometimes suddenly stopped to receive the ball in place.

The runs of the two ”little foxes” had Rotherham’s two center-backs spinning in circles.

More importantly, the other four midfielders began to quietly sneak into those ”circles.”

Anthony Sweeney appeared silently at the edge of the penalty area, like an experienced hunter.

Liam Bridcutt stealthily inserted himself into the left half-space.

Mark Donaldson chose the right half-space as his ”hiding spot.”

Gary Liddle was even bolder, aiming directly for the most dangerous circle inside the penalty area.

The ball began to dance at their feet.

One-touch passing, no stopping, no hesitation.

Oliver Baker received the ball and immediately passed it to Tom Ince.

Tom Ince, without stopping the ball, passed it horizontally to Anthony Sweeney.

Sweeney also played a one-touch pass, finding Bridcutt on the wing.

Bridcutt continued with a one-touch pass, and the ball returned to Ince’s feet.

Their passing was simple, fast, with no unnecessary movements; every pass made Rotherham’s defense a half-step slow.

Rotherham’s players were completely stunned.

They watched like a magic show, seeing the ball move quickly at the opponents’ feet, yet always being a step too slow, always unable to win the ball.

”What kind of football is this?”

Rotherham’s midfielder, Lee Williamson, panted, sweat already beading on his forehead.
