Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

122: A beast trapped in the quagmireIn the Hartlepool United changing room at Boundary Park, a an indescribable tension hung in the damp, cold air.

Old John stood in front of the tactics board, his marker pen trembling in his hand. He hadn’t felt this kind of powerlessness in a long time—that frustration of knowing exactly where the problem was but being unable to find a solution.

“Damn this weather.”

Tinkler grumbled indignantly as he peeled off his soaking wet jersey. His white away kit was covered in mud, looking as if he’d just returned from a construction site.

Vardy sat silently in the corner, his hands clasped over his head.

Those forty-five minutes had been a nightmare for him.

Every time he touched the ball, two players would sandwich him; every time he turned, someone would tug at his jersey from behind. The crude tackles and elbowing reminded him of his toughest days in the youth academy.

“We have to change something.”

Sigurdsson’s voice broke the silence. The Icelander rarely spoke in the changing room, but today’s situation clearly wouldn’t let him sit still.

“Change what?”

Maloney grimaced, spreading his hands: “We can’t even keep possession of the ball, so what’s there to change?”

Henderson walked to the washbasin and splashed cold water on his face.

His reflection in the mirror looked dishevelled; the forty-five minutes of play had exhausted him more than a typical ninety-minute training session.

“They just want to drag us into the mud.”

Shawcross said, wiping mud from his boots: “This style of play is common in League One, but we’ve rarely encountered it before.”

Just as the players sank into a gloomy mood, the changing room door was pushed open.

It wasn’t Old John, nor was it the team doctor or assistant coach.

Everyone’s gaze turned to the doorway, where a figure they rarely saw on match days stood.

Lin Feng.

He wore a dark grey trench coat, still flecked with raindrops.

This was his first appearance in the changing room during halftime this season, an action that alone was enough to make everyone realize the seriousness of the situation.

“Boss?”

Vardy looked up in surprise.

Lin Feng silently surveyed the changing room. The players were all dejected, their muddy jerseys clinging to their bodies, showing clear signs of fatigue.

More importantly, he saw a long-unseen sense of confusion.

These young men, who had been invincible for the past few months, were encountering an opponent who countered technique purely with physicality and willpower for the first time.

Lin Feng spoke calmly, his voice not loud, yet it brought everyone’s murmuring to a halt: “We still have fifteen minutes—that’s enough.”

He walked towards the tactics board and picked up the marker pen. Old John, sensing the moment, stepped aside, a look of anticipation on his face.

“What does Oldham want?”

Lin Feng drew a simple diagram on the tactics board: “They want chaos, they want physical confrontation, they want to turn the game into a brawl.”

“So what do we give them?”

He paused, his gaze sweeping over each face: “We give them order.”

Henderson frowned: “But the pitch conditions…”

“Pitch conditions are the same for both sides.”

Lin Feng interrupted him: “The key isn’t what kind of football we play, but how we prevent the opponent from playing the football they want.”

He drew a brand new formation on the tactics board.

“In the second half, we change our approach. We no longer try to control possession; instead, we control the tempo.”

“How exactly do we do that?”

Tinkler asked.

“Make them chase us.”

Lin Feng’s answer instantly quieted the changing room, and the players exchanged glances, clearly not expecting such instructions: “Mark, you and Jordan will no longer try to organize attacks in midfield. Your task is to immediately distribute the ball wide after receiving it, making the ball transfer quickly between the flanks and the center.”

He drew several arrows on the tactics board with the marker pen: “The goal isn’t to create chances, but to make Oldham’s players run constantly. They want physical confrontation? Then let them expend their stamina in confrontation.”

Vardy raised his hand: “What about our attack?”

“Patience.”

Lin Feng turned to him: “Jamie, your task today isn’t to score, but to tie up defenders. Use your speed to prevent their defenders from pushing up easily. As long as you’ roam in the attacking third, they’ll have to keep players to mark you.”

This tactical approach completely overturned Hartlepool United’s usual style of play. From possession to tempo control, from active offense to passive containment, it required every player to adjust their mindset.

“That sounds complicated.”

Maloney expressed some concern.

“On the contrary, it’s the simplest tactic.”

Lin Feng shook his head: “Everyone just needs to do their job. Defenders are responsible for playing the ball out, midfielders are responsible for transferring it, and forwards are responsible for tying up defenders. No complex coordination is needed, no exquisite passes, just execution.”

He put down the marker pen and walked among the players.

“Oldham thinks they understand us, they think we only play one way.

But the beauty of football lies in change. When an opponent adapts to your rhythm, the best response is to completely change the rhythm.”

Old John nodded repeatedly from the side. Although he didn’t fully grasp the deeper logic of Lin Feng’s tactics, he could feel the necessity of this change.

“One more thing.”

Lin Feng’s voice grew serious: “The second half might be dirtier, more physical. They’ll use more little tricks to test our limits. Remember, our goal is to win the game, not to win a brawl.”

“Stay calm, stay focused, and let the referee handle those fouls. We just need to concentrate on playing football.”

Schmeichel, who had been listening quietly, spoke up: “What if they intensify their set-piece attacks?”

“That’s our opportunity.”

A glint flashed in Lin Feng’s eyes: “Set pieces mean a battle of positions, and a battle of positions is what we excel at. Kasper, your command will become even more crucial in the second half.”

The fifteen-minute halftime break passed quickly.

The changing room door opened again, and the players emerged, no longer dejected, but with straightened backs and much firmer steps.

The rain was still falling at Boundary Park, but it wasn’t as heavy as in the first half.

The pitch was still muddy, but the players no longer used it as an excuse. They had new tasks, new goals, and a new tactical approach.

Oldham fans in the stands were still chanting their support songs.

They saw hope of drawing or even defeating the league leaders, and the thrill of watching these “technical” players struggle in the mud.

It wasn’t about fancy passing and control, nor intricate combinations, but the most primal football wisdom.

Adapt, change, and then conquer.
