the Villainess they took for granted

The Imperial Palace was already glowing by the time Marian’s carriage arrived.

Light spilled through the tall windows of the eastern wing, turning the glass into warm pools of gold against the darkening evening.

The entrance courtyard was crowded with carriages.

One after another, they rolled beneath the covered portico, their occupants emerging beneath the watchful eyes of Imperial guards and household servants.

Marian’s carriage joined the procession.

She looked through the window as they moved forward.

The palace had always been impressive.

Tonight, however, it seemed almost deliberately magnificent.

The Imperial household had clearly decided that after two subdued years, there would be no question about whether the Season had truly returned.

Every detail announced it.

The lanterns lining the drive.

The guards in formal dress.

The flowers arranged along the entrance.

The endless stream of nobles arriving in their finest clothes.

Marian felt something stir inside her.

Excitement, perhaps.

Or anticipation.

She wasn’t entirely sure.

Her fingers brushed the edge of one glove.

Beneath it, the diamonds at her ears were already in place.

She had thought about them several times during the journey.

Now that she was actually here, she found herself thinking about them again.

She exhaled quietly.

There was no point second-guessing herself now.

The carriage came to a stop.

A footman opened the door.

”My lady.”

Marian stepped down.

Immediately, she was greeted by the familiar choreography of an Imperial event.

A servant announced her name.

Another directed her toward the entrance.

A palace official checked the invitations of those arriving behind her.

Marian climbed the broad steps.

Inside, the palace was even more crowded.

The entrance hall had been transformed for the evening.

Flowers lined the marble staircase.

Crystal chandeliers illuminated the high ceilings.

Servants moved constantly through the corridors, carrying trays, opening doors, directing guests toward the ballroom.

The atmosphere was lively without being disorderly.

Everyone knew that the Emperor was expected.

That knowledge seemed to hang over the entire gathering.

Marian entered the receiving area.

She recognized people almost immediately.

Old families.

Newer ones.

Ladies she had known before her departure.

Gentlemen she had not seen since she was a girl.

Some greeted her warmly.

Others offered polite bows.

A few looked at her for just a moment longer than etiquette required.

Marian knew why.

She had expected it.

She was Marian Valmont.

She had returned after eighteen months away.

She had once been engaged to the Emperor.

She had later become engaged to the Duke of Ashford.

And now she was here.

Unmarried.

Available.

She smiled politely when necessary and continued forward.

The ballroom itself was already filling.

Music played softly from the musicians’ gallery, though the evening had not formally begun.

Groups of guests stood together in conversation.

Young debutantes gathered beside their mothers.

Older ladies watched the room with the careful attention of people who had spent decades studying society.

Gentlemen stood in clusters, exchanging quiet remarks.

Everyone was waiting.

Marian found Clara near one of the side entrances.

”There you are.”

Marian smiled.

”I was beginning to wonder whether you’d been swallowed by the crowd.”

”Almost.”

Clara embraced her briefly before stepping back.

Then her gaze moved over Marian.

Her eyes paused.

At the earrings.

A knowing smile appeared.

”You actually wore them.”

Marian touched one absently.

”I thought they suited the gown.”

”Of course they did.”

Marian gave her a look.

Clara laughed.

”I won’t say another word.”

”Good.”

”You look beautiful.”

”Thank you.”

Clara linked her arm through Marian’s.

”Come. Everyone is already inside.”

They moved farther into the ballroom.

Marian looked around.

The room was magnificent.

She had attended countless balls before.

She knew the rituals.

The music.

The dancing.

The endless conversations.

The careful positioning of families.

The quiet negotiations disguised as pleasantries.

Yet tonight felt different.

Perhaps because she was different.

For the first time, she had entered a Season without belonging to anyone.

No engagement.

No fiancé.

No predetermined future.

She was simply Marian.

And somewhere in this room was the man she had spent the last three days thinking about.

Marian looked toward the entrance.

Nothing.

Not yet.

Clara noticed.

”He isn’t here.”

Marian looked at her.

”I wasn’t asking.”

”I didn’t say you were.”

Marian smiled despite herself.

”You’re insufferable.”

”I’ve known you too long to be otherwise.”

They joined the other ladies.

Conversation continued around them.

The debutantes were discussed.

The returning families.

The marriages everyone expected to happen.

The families rumored to be seeking advantageous matches.

Marian listened and occasionally contributed.

But every so often, without meaning to, her attention drifted toward the entrance.

He wasn’t there.

Not yet.

It was only natural.

The Emperor would arrive last.

Everyone knew it.

The evening could not properly begin until he did.

And so the room waited.

The anticipation gradually became more noticeable.

Conversations softened whenever footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Several gentlemen glanced toward the doors.

Ladies adjusted their gowns.

Young debutantes checked their gloves and hair.

The palace servants became more attentive.

Even those pretending not to care were clearly waiting.

Marian felt the change too.

She straightened slightly.

The musicians stopped.

The ballroom quieted.

A palace official stepped forward.

The doors opened.

And the room fell completely silent.

”The Emperor.”

Marian looked up.

And for one suspended moment, she forgot to breathe.

Adrian entered.

He was twenty-five.

She had known that, of course. She had known his age. She had known that he was Emperor. She had known what he looked like.

None of that prepared her for seeing him like this.

He had always been handsome.

That was hardly new.

But the man walking toward them was not the Crown Prince Marian remembered.

His platinum hair caught the light from the chandeliers, almost silver beneath the brilliance. His blue eyes swept across the ballroom. His features seemed sharper than she remembered, his shoulders broader, his posture straighter.

There was something in the way he carried himself now that had not existed before.

Not arrogance.

Authority.

He did not need to demand attention.

He simply entered a room, and everyone gave it to him.

Marian watched as he crossed the ballroom.

A palace official approached.

”Your Majesty, the guests are assembled.”

Adrian gave a slight nod.

”Begin.”

The official bowed immediately.

”Yes, Your Majesty.”

And moved.

He was Emperor now.

Not the Crown Prince who had once stood beside her, waiting for a future that seemed inevitable.

Not the young man whose every movement had still carried some trace of expectation.

This Adrian needed no such expectation.

He gave an instruction, and it was followed.

He turned his head, and people waited.

He spoke, and the room listened.

The Empire was already moving at his command.

Marian remained still, watching him.
