Chapter 175: Chapter 175: The Succession

The door closed behind the physicians.

Adrian remained beside his father’s bed.

For several minutes, he did not move.

The room had become unbearably quiet.

His father was still there.

The same room.

The same bed.

The same face.

But the man himself was gone.

Adrian lowered his gaze to their hands.

Slowly, he released his father’s.

Then he stood.

The movement felt strangely difficult.

He looked once more at the bed.

”I’m sorry.”

The words were barely audible.

Then Adrian turned toward the door.

The moment he stepped outside, the world changed.

The Lord Chancellor was waiting in the corridor.

So were the commander of the palace guard, the Imperial secretary, and two senior physicians.

They all looked at him.

No one spoke at first.

Adrian closed the door behind him.

”His Majesty has passed.”

The words settled over the corridor.

The Lord Chancellor bowed his head.

”My condolences, Your Highness.”

Adrian nodded once.

His grief remained.

It would remain for a long time.

But there were things that had to be done now.

”How long has the council been waiting?”

”Nearly an hour.”

”Then we should not keep them waiting longer.”

The Lord Chancellor hesitated.

”Your Highness, there is one matter we must settle first.”

Adrian looked at him.

”The succession.”

”Yes.”

Adrian was silent for a moment.

Then he nodded.

”Of course.”

They began walking.

His father’s death had changed everything.

There was no longer any reason for Adrian to think of himself as the man waiting to inherit the throne.

He was the sovereign now.

The thought still felt unfamiliar.

But the Empire could not wait for him to become accustomed to it.

The council chamber was already full when Adrian entered.

Every seat was occupied.

Ministers.

Military commanders.

Senior officials.

Representatives of the great houses.

The atmosphere was subdued.

No one needed to ask why they had been summoned.

Adrian walked to the head of the table.

His father’s chair was waiting for him.

He stopped beside it for half a second.

Then he sat.

The room bowed.

”Your Majesty.”

The title sounded different now.

Not because the words had changed.

Because his father was no longer the one receiving them.

Adrian looked across the chamber.

”We will proceed according to imperial law.”

The Lord Chancellor stepped forward.

”The necessary documents have been prepared.”

”Bring them.”

They were placed before Adrian.

He read through them carefully.

The formal declaration.

The confirmation of succession.

The obligations of the Crown.

Everything his father had once signed was now being placed before him.

Adrian took the pen.

For one brief moment, he thought of the man lying in the room upstairs.

Then he signed.

The first document.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His signature looked exactly as it always had.

But it was no longer the signature of a Crown Prince.

It was the signature of the Emperor.

Adrian set the pen down.

”The succession is secured.”

The Lord Chancellor bowed.

”Yes, Your Majesty.”

Adrian looked around the table.

”The formal proclamation will be issued once the necessary arrangements have been completed.”

No one objected.

The Empire needed to be informed.

But before that happened, the palace had to be secured, the proper officials notified, and the transition organized.

His father had died unexpectedly.

There would be questions.

Rumors.

Fear.

The announcement had to be clear.

The Emperor was dead.

The Crown Prince had succeeded him.

There would be no uncertainty over the throne.

Adrian leaned back.

”The capital remains closed.”

The commander of the palace guard straightened.

”Until the investigation is complete?”

”Yes.”

There had been no clear explanation for his father’s sudden collapse.

Until they knew whether the illness had been natural, accidental, or something more sinister, Adrian would not allow unnecessary movement through the gates.

”No one enters or leaves without authorization.”

”Understood.”

”Essential food and medical supplies may continue to enter, but every shipment is to be inspected.”

”Yes, Your Majesty.”

”And the palace?”

”Secured.”

”Keep it that way.”

Adrian’s gaze moved across the room.

”No celebrations. No public gatherings. Nothing that could be interpreted as disrespect during the mourning period.”

The Lord Chancellor bowed.

”Of course.”

Adrian looked down at the documents again.

His father had been Emperor more than two decades.

His death would shake the Empire.

There would be uncertainty.

Speculation.

People would wonder whether the new Emperor was prepared.

Adrian would give them no reason to doubt it.

Not now.

Not when his father had just entrusted him with everything without ever having the chance to say goodbye.

He looked up.

”Prepare the proclamation.”

The Imperial secretary stepped forward.

”Regarding His Majesty’s death?”

”And the succession.”

The man bowed.

”Understood.”

Adrian’s voice remained steady.

”It will be announced together.”

The formal proclamation was drafted before sunset.

The Emperor had died.

The Crown Prince had succeeded him.

The Empire remained stable.

The capital remained under temporary restrictions while the circumstances surrounding the Emperor’s illness were investigated.

The wording was deliberate.

No panic.

No speculation.

No uncertainty.

Adrian read it once.

”Release it.”

The secretary bowed.

”Yes, Your Majesty.”

The announcement would reach the capital first.

Then the provinces.

Then the foreign courts.

Within hours, every major power would know that the Empire had a new Emperor.

The mourning period would begin immediately.

The funeral preparations would follow.

And later, when the proper time came, there would be a coronation.

But Adrian did not think about that yet.

He sat alone in his study after the others had left.

For the first time since his father’s death, there was silence again.

He looked at the empty chair across from his desk.

His father had sat there countless times.

Adrian remembered him there.

Reading reports.

Arguing with ministers.

Drinking tea while pretending not to listen when Adrian complained about some particularly tedious official.

A strange ache settled in his chest.

He looked away.

There would be time to grieve later.

He had an Empire to govern.

And then, inevitably, his thoughts turned toward the capital.

Toward the people who remained there.

Marian.

And Cassian.

Adrian’s expression hardened slightly.

He had not forgotten them.

He had simply been occupied with his father.

Now he could no longer pretend that the matter could remain untouched.

Cassian was still outside the capital.

Adrian knew that.

The reports from the eastern gate had continued.

The Duke of Ashford had made no attempt to force his way inside.

He had understood the restrictions.

He had waited.

That was exactly what Adrian had expected him to do.

But the Emperor’s death changed the political circumstances.

The succession had now been secured.

The formal proclamation would make Adrian’s position clear to the entire Empire.

But the investigation into his father’s death had only begun.

And Cassian was not merely the Emperor’s nephew.

He was the son of the Emperor’s brother.

Second in the line of succession.

His presence inside the capital, immediately after the Emperor’s death, would inevitably attract attention.

Adrian did not need to invent a reason to keep him outside.

The reason already existed.

He simply needed to preserve the existing restrictions.

For now.

He looked toward the window.

Beyond the palace walls, the capital was beginning to mourn.

Somewhere outside those walls, Cassian was waiting.

And somewhere within them, Marian was waiting too.

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

His father was dead.

That still hurt more than he wanted to admit.

But the Empire was now his.

The throne was his.

And with it came the authority his father had once possessed.

For years, Adrian had been the man who had to wait.

Wait for the crown.

Wait for permission.

Wait for circumstances to change.

Now, for the first time, there was no one above him.

He opened his eyes.

There was no need to act tonight.

There would be a funeral.

There would be mourning.

There would be ceremonies.

There would be time.

The current restrictions would not last forever.

Adrian knew that.

Eventually, the investigation would end.

Eventually, the capital would have to reopen.

And when it did, Cassian would be free to enter.

Worse—

Marian would be free to leave.

She could simply walk out of the capital and find him waiting beyond its walls.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

He could not keep the gates closed indefinitely.

Nor could he rely on the Emperor’s death to keep them apart forever.

But there was no need to decide that tonight.

Not yet.

His father had just died.

There would be time.
