Chapter 155: Chapter 155: The First Move

The room remained empty long after Marian left.

Adrian did not move.

Her words were still there.

I don’t regret the choice.

He had known, of course.

Somewhere beneath the anger, beneath the pride, beneath all the explanations he had constructed for himself, he had known.

Marian had chosen Cassian.

But knowing something and accepting its consequences were different things.

For months, Adrian had been able to tell himself there was time.

The dissolution had happened.

Cassian had left.

Five months had passed.

Cassian had returned.

There had been the ball.

The dance.

The conversation.

And then the proposal.

Everything had happened so quickly that Adrian had barely had time to comprehend one event before another replaced it.

But now there was nothing left between intention and reality.

There was a ring on Marian’s hand.

There was an accepted proposal.

There would be an announcement.

Then preparations.

Then a wedding.

And after that, the matter would no longer be something that could be undone with a conversation.

Adrian finally stood.

He crossed the room and stopped beside the window.

The capital glittered beneath the darkness.

He knew what he was supposed to do.

Nothing.

His father had already made his position clear.

The dissolution had been accepted.

Marian had been allowed to choose.

His father had told him, in everything but the exact words, to let her go.

And Adrian had agreed.

That was the part that made this worse.

He had agreed.

He had accepted the decision.

He had stepped aside.

And while he had been trying to convince himself that he could live with it, Cassian had returned to the capital and proposed to her.

Adrian’s fingers tightened against the windowsill.

He could not simply go to his father and say that he had changed his mind.

He could not ask the Emperor to overturn a decision he had already approved.

He could not command Duke Valmont to withdraw his daughter’s consent.

And he certainly could not order Marian to abandon the man she had chosen.

That would not merely be an abuse of his position.

It would be an open contradiction of his father’s will.

Adrian would not do that.

Not openly.

His gaze remained fixed on the city.

The Crown Prince had power.

But power was not the same as sovereignty.

His father was still Emperor.

There was a difference between being the man who would one day command the Empire and being the man who commanded it today.

Everyone knew that difference.

Adrian knew it better than anyone.

If he moved openly, his father would stop him.

Perhaps not publicly.

Perhaps not angrily.

But he would.

And Adrian would have no argument left.

So he would not move openly.

He turned away from the window.

His expression had changed.

The anger remained.

But it had become colder.

More deliberate.

If he could not command the outcome, he would influence the circumstances that produced it.

He walked toward his desk.

There were dozens of reports waiting for him.

Most were ordinary.

Taxation.

Appointments.

Provincial administration.

Military correspondence.

His eyes moved across them without interest.

Then stopped.

The northern dispatches.

Adrian picked up the latest report.

The northern territories had been quiet for months.

Too quiet, perhaps.

There had been scattered reports of bandit activity along some of the less-used routes. Nothing significant. Nothing that required military intervention.

But the north was vast.

The roads were difficult.

The border settlements were distant from the capital.

A problem could grow for days before anyone here understood its size.

And Cassian’s territory sat close enough to the region that any serious disturbance would eventually demand his attention.

Adrian lowered the report.

He was not going to invent a war.

That would be reckless.

Too many people would suffer.

Too many officials would become involved.

And his father would notice.

No.

He needed something smaller.

Something plausible.

Something that could be acted upon without anyone wondering why.

A security concern.

A disruption along a northern supply route.

A report from a local commander that could not simply be ignored.

Nothing dramatic.

Just enough to make the Duke of Ashford look toward his own lands.

Adrian reached for the bell.

He rang it once.

A few minutes later, his private secretary entered.

”Your Highness.”

”Send for Lord Merrow.”

The secretary hesitated.

”The Minister of War?”

”Yes.”

”Immediately?”

”Immediately.”

The secretary bowed.

”Yes, Your Highness.”

He left.

Adrian returned to the reports.

Lord Merrow was ambitious.

That was not necessarily a flaw.

Ambition made men predictable.

Men who wanted influence understood where influence would eventually reside.

Merrow was not one of the Emperor’s closest confidants.

He was not disloyal to the Emperor.

Adrian would never ask him to be.

But he understood the future.

That was enough.

Nearly half an hour later, the door opened.

Lord Merrow entered alone.

He bowed.

”Your Highness.”

”Merrow.”

Adrian gestured toward the chair.

The minister sat.

Adrian remained standing.

”I’ve been reviewing the northern reports.”

Merrow glanced toward the papers.

”Has something happened?”

”Not yet.”

The answer made the minister look up.

Adrian placed a report on the desk.

”There have been several irregularities along the northern supply routes.”

Merrow read the page.

”These?”

”Yes.”

”They’ve been attributed to bandit activity.”

”So far.”

Adrian’s voice remained calm.

”But if the reports are accurate, the pattern is becoming unusual.”

Merrow looked at him.

”What do you want done?”

There it was.

The question Adrian had been waiting for.

He answered carefully.

”Nothing dramatic.”

Merrow waited.

”I want the northern command to review the situation.”

”An inspection?”

”More thorough than that.”

Adrian tapped the report once.

”Communications. Supply routes. Fortifications. Patrols. I want to know whether the region is adequately secured before winter.”

Merrow nodded slowly.

”That could take some time.”

”Then give them time.”

The minister studied him.

”Who should oversee it?”

Adrian said nothing.

He did not need to.

Merrow’s eyes narrowed slightly.

”Duke Ashford.”

”His territory is directly affected.”

”And he would know the region.”

”Better than most.”

Merrow leaned back.

There was a brief silence.

Then he asked:

”Would His Majesty need to approve the assignment?”

Adrian’s expression remained unchanged.

”We are not issuing an extraordinary military order.”

The distinction was deliberate.

”Have the northern command submit a recommendation. If they determine that the Duke’s presence is necessary, the matter can proceed through the usual channels.”

Merrow understood.

No command from the Crown Prince.

No decree.

No signature.

Nothing that could be traced directly to Adrian.

Just a recommendation.

A reasonable one.

The minister rose.

”I understand.”

Adrian looked at him.

”Do you?”

Merrow met his eyes.

For a moment, something unspoken passed between them.

The minister bowed.

”I believe I do.”

”Good.”

Merrow left.

The door closed.

Adrian remained still.

That was all.

Nothing had happened.

No order had been issued.

No law had been changed.

No one had been threatened.

And yet the first piece had moved.

Adrian sat down.

He picked up another report.

This one concerned Valmont.

His eyes moved over it slowly.

House Valmont had survived the dissolution financially.

Barely.

The compensation had been paid.

The matter had been settled.

Everyone knew that.

Adrian knew better than most.

He also knew that a great house did not remain powerful simply because it possessed enough money to survive one expense.

Trade was the blood of a duchy.

Contracts.

Tariffs.

Shipping rights.

Loans.

Land revenues.

All of them could become pressure points.

Adrian did not intend to destroy House Valmont.

That would be excessive.

And unnecessary.

He only needed to create enough difficulty that the Duke became occupied.

Enough that his attention was pulled toward his estate.

Enough that Marian’s family began to understand how precarious their position could become without sufficient support.

His gaze moved to a stack of petitions.

Several had been waiting for review.

Adrian separated three.

Then another.

He studied them.

A trade concession.

A shipping dispute.

A petition regarding agricultural tariffs.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing that required punishment.

But each one could become an opportunity.

He called his secretary again.

”These petitions.”

The man waited.

”Have them reviewed.”

”By whom?”

”Not the Imperial Treasury.”

The secretary looked surprised.

”Then?”

”Send them through the commercial ministry.”

A pause.

”Very well.”

”And make certain the appropriate officials understand that these matters should be resolved promptly.”

The secretary bowed.

”Yes, Your Highness.”

Adrian leaned back.

Promptly.

Not favorably.

Not unfairly.

Promptly.

That was all.

The difference mattered.

He would not attack Valmont.

He would simply make certain that the Duke became increasingly occupied with matters that could not be ignored.

And if Adrian later became the man who could solve some of those problems?

That would simply be fortunate.

The thought almost amused him.

Almost.

He looked toward the clock.

The night was advancing.

Somewhere in the capital, Cassian was probably with Marian.

Perhaps they were discussing the wedding.

Perhaps they were making plans.

Perhaps Marian was still looking at the ring on her hand.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

No.

He would not imagine it.

That was useless.

He had spent enough time thinking.

Tomorrow, the machinery would begin moving.

Quietly.

Independently.

Without his father’s knowledge.

And, most importantly, without anything that could be called an imperial command.

Adrian rose again.

He returned to the window.

The capital lay beneath him, vast and unsuspecting.

He had spent his entire life learning how power worked.

He had watched ministers bargain.

Nobles maneuver.

Officials protect their interests.

Men promise loyalty to one ruler while quietly preparing for the next.

He had always understood the game.

He had simply never had a reason to play it against his own family.

Until now.

The thought brought a strange heaviness with it.

He loved his father.

That had not changed.

He would never deliberately harm him.

He would never humiliate him.

He would never openly defy him.

But Marian was slipping away.

And Adrian had finally accepted something else.

If he wanted to change the outcome, he could not wait for permission.

He would have to act in the spaces where permission was not required.

One small decision.

Then another.

Nothing that could be seen from the throne.

Nothing that would force his father to choose between Emperor and son.

Nothing that would reveal what Adrian truly wanted.

He would move beneath the surface.

And if anyone benefited from placing the future Emperor in their debt?

Well.

The future had a long memory.

Adrian looked toward the dark horizon.

The first move had been made.

He did not know yet how many moves would follow.

He only knew one thing.

He would not wait for Marian to change her mind.

He would change the world around her first.

And when she finally looked toward him again—

he intended to be the only choice left standing.
