the Villainess they took for granted

Chapter 181: Chapter 181: the coronation II

Marian realized that the Adrian she had known was no longer simply the man she remembered.

As Crown Prince, there had always been someone above him.

His father.

Someone whose wishes he had to consider.

Someone whose authority could override his own.

That was gone now.

Adrian was no longer waiting for his future to begin.

It had begun.

He was the Emperor.

Marian lowered her gaze.

The realization left her with a strange feeling she could not quite name.

Not longing.

Not regret.

Not yet.

Only the uncomfortable awareness that a person she had once known so well had entered a life she could no longer imagine herself sharing.

Her thoughts returned immediately to Cassian.

That was where they belonged.

Where they had always belonged.

She tightened her fingers together.

He’s alive.

She had to believe that.

The ceremony continued.

The Imperial ministers came forward one by one.

They pledged their loyalty.

The military commanders followed.

Then the highest-ranking members of the nobility.

Each knelt.

Each swore allegiance.

Adrian acknowledged them all.

His answers were brief.

His manner was composed.

But there was no hesitation.

When one minister stumbled slightly over a ceremonial phrase, Adrian corrected him with a quiet word.

The man immediately bowed.

”As Your Majesty commands.”

Marian noticed.

So did everyone else.

No one smiled.

No one questioned it.

The ceremony continued.

Adrian had changed.

Perhaps the crown had not changed him.

Perhaps it had simply revealed what had always been there.

--

When the final rites were completed, Adrian rose from the Imperial throne.

The herald announced the end of the ceremony.

The hall erupted into applause.

The bells outside rang again.

The Empire had a new Emperor.

Adrian descended the steps from the throne.

He moved among the highest-ranking nobles, receiving their formal congratulations.

Duke Valmont eventually approached with Marian beside him.

They waited their turn.

When they reached Adrian, Duke Valmont bowed deeply.

”Your Majesty.”

Adrian inclined his head.

”Duke Valmont.”

”Allow me to offer my congratulations.”

”Thank you.”

Adrian’s gaze shifted.

For the briefest moment, his eyes met Marian’s.

She lowered into a curtsy.

”Your Majesty.”

”Lady Valmont.”

Nothing more.

No hesitation.

No lingering glance.

No private acknowledgment.

He treated her exactly as he treated every other noblewoman who approached him.

Then his attention returned to her father.

Marian rose.

For some reason, that brief exchange unsettled her.

She didn’t know why.

Perhaps because she had expected something.

A look.

A memory.

Some indication that he remembered what they had once been.

There was nothing.

Adrian simply moved on to the next noble.

Marian watched him for a moment.

Then she looked away.

--

The celebration that followed was restrained.

The Empire was still within the broader period of mourning for the late Emperor.

There would be no extravagant festivities.

Only a formal reception.

A gathering of the court.

A ceremonial dinner.

Enough to mark the occasion without diminishing the solemnity of the previous weeks.

Marian stood beside one of the tall windows while her father spoke with another duke.

She looked outside.

The capital had changed again.

The streets were filled with people.

The Imperial banners had been raised once more.

This time, they flew for Adrian.

She thought of Cassian.

The thought came without warning.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Three weeks.

Still nothing.

Perhaps he was alive.

Perhaps he was somewhere far from the capital.

Perhaps he was injured.

Perhaps someone had found him and was caring for him.

She had to believe there was still a possibility.

Because the alternative was too painful.

She opened her eyes.

Across the hall, Adrian was speaking with several ministers.

He looked completely at ease.

Not relaxed.

Not careless.

Simply certain.

He belonged there.

For the first time, Marian understood that the world had truly changed.

Cassian was gone.

Her wedding had never happened.

Her life had taken a direction she had never imagined.

And Adrian—

Adrian was Emperor.

She looked at him one last time.

Then turned away.

--

Later that evening, after the last guests had departed, Adrian returned to the palace.

The corridors were quieter now.

The ceremony was over.

The crown had been placed upon his head.

The Empire had accepted him.

He entered his study alone.

For a moment, he stood beside the window.

The Imperial palace stretched beneath him.

The city lights flickered in the distance.

He had spent his entire life preparing for this.

And yet, now that it had happened, there was remarkably little to feel.

His father was gone.

That was the one thing that still hurt.

Everything else was simply reality.

He turned toward his desk.

The crown had been removed and placed carefully upon its stand.

Adrian looked at it.

Then at the papers waiting beside it.

There would be more decisions tomorrow.

More ministers.

More reports.

More matters requiring his attention.

The Empire would continue.

It always did.

Adrian sat down.

He opened the first document.

--

That night, Marian returned to Valmont House.

She stood for a long time beside her bedroom window.

The capital was quiet again.

Her father’s voice could be heard faintly from somewhere downstairs.

She thought of Cassian.

She wondered where he was.

Whether he was alive.

Whether he was hurt.

Whether he had somehow survived that fall.

She pressed her hand against the cold glass.

”He’ll come back.”

She whispered it to herself.

”He promised.”

And she believed him.

She had to.

Outside, the Imperial banners moved in the night wind.

The Empire had crowned its new ruler.

Adrian was no longer the Crown Prince.

He was Emperor.

And somewhere beyond the capital, Cassian Ashford remained missing.

No body had been found.

No farewell had been given.

For Marian, that meant hope remained.

For the Empire, it meant nothing had changed.

The world had already begun moving forward without him.

And above it all sat Adrian.

The Emperor.

AN: ahhh now we’re done with volume 1! Congrats to me and you!!!! Thank you so much if you’re still here with me!

Btw if you noticed marian looking at adrian bec well some thoughts about cassian but remember, one cant just accuse the emperor and marian cant see anything that might indicate adrian could be the primary suspect. Like what would his motivations even be? At the same time she cant approach him to just say help me find my man etc. I know it feels somewhat unsatisfactory but if you really think of it, what can she really do? She also knows that adrian was grieving his father’s death and she knew how much adrian loved his father. Ok sorry for the long explanation but i just want you to know.
