Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Closure

Adrian arrived first.

Naturally.

The Crown Prince arriving second would have caused unnecessary confusion.

At least, that was the excuse he gave himself.

The reality was considerably less convincing.

He had arrived nearly twenty minutes early.

An unfortunate fact.

One he intended to forget immediately.

The drawing room remained quiet.

Formal.

Respectable.

Deliberately public.

The doors remained open.

Servants lingered within sight.

Everything precisely as it should be.

Nothing inappropriate.

Nothing that could invite speculation.

Nothing that could be misunderstood.

And yet Adrian found himself strangely restless.

A familiar problem lately.

The clock continued its relentless progress.

One minute.

Then another.

Eventually footsteps sounded beyond the doorway.

Adrian looked up.

And forgot every thought he had been having.

Marian entered.

The sight of her struck harder than expected.

Not because she looked different.

She didn’t.

Not really.

The same golden-blonde hair.

The same calm expression.

The same familiar presence that had occupied so much of his life for so many years.

No.

The difference was smaller than that.

His gaze dropped.

Her left hand.

The ring.

The room suddenly felt very quiet.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrian rose.

Years of training carried him through the motion automatically.

Marian curtsied.

Perfectly proper.

Perfectly correct.

Perfectly distant.

”Your Highness.”

The title landed poorly.

Very poorly.

For eighteen years she had called him Adrian.

Now she did not.

The distinction should not have mattered.

And yet.

It did.

Adrian gestured toward the chair opposite him.

”Lady Marian.”

The formality sounded equally wrong.

Marian sat.

Adrian followed a moment later.

Silence settled between them.

An uncomfortable silence.

Not the silence of strangers.

That would have been easier.

This was the silence of people who once knew each other too well.

The silence of eighteen years.

The silence of things left unsaid.

Eventually Marian spoke first.

Of course she did.

She always had been braver than people realized.

”You wished to speak with me.”

Direct.

Simple.

No attempt to escape the situation.

Adrian found himself unsurprised.

For a moment, he considered a dozen possible answers.

Every one of them sounded inadequate.

In the end, he settled for the truth.

”I did.”

The silence returned.

Briefly.

Then Adrian looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And discovered something unfortunate.

She looked happy.

Not relieved.

Not content.

Happy.

The realization irritated him immediately.

Not because she was happy.

Because the sight should have reassured him.

Instead, it unsettled him.

”You’ve been receiving congratulations.”

Marian blinked.

The observation clearly surprised her.

Then she smiled faintly.

”A great many.”

”I imagine.”

The smile remained.

Small.

Genuine.

Gods.

There it was again.

That happiness.

That certainty.

Adrian found himself asking before he could stop himself.

”Are you happy?”

The question escaped quietly.

The room seemed to still.

Marian stared at him for a moment.

Then answered.

Immediately.

Without hesitation.

”Yes.”

The single word struck harder than expected.

Adrian maintained his expression.

Years of training proved useful.

Internally, the answer lingered.

Yes.

Not uncertainty.

Not hesitation.

Not confusion.

Yes.

He should not have asked.

The realization arrived too late.

Marian seemed to notice something in his expression.

Because her own softened slightly.

Not with pity.

Never pity.

Something gentler.

Older.

More complicated.

The sort of understanding that only came from years spent knowing someone.

Unfortunately.

That made everything worse.

Adrian looked away first.

Toward the window.

Toward anything except her.

A strategic retreat.

One that accomplished nothing.

A familiar problem.

”When did you know?”

The question emerged before he could stop it.

Marian blinked.

”When did I know what?”

”That you would accept him.”

Silence.

The answer did not come immediately.

Marian considered the question carefully.

As though genuinely trying to answer it.

The realization bothered him.

Because it meant she was taking him seriously.

After everything.

”Before he asked.”

A faint smile touched her lips.

”Quite a bit before, actually.”

The answer should not have surprised him.

And yet.

It did.

Adrian folded his hands.

Steady.

Controlled.

Calm.

The performance remained flawless.

Internally.

Less so.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then Adrian asked the question he had not intended to ask.

The question he had spent the entire morning avoiding.

”Do you regret it?”

Marian went still.

The room seemed to follow.

Adrian held her gaze.

Neither looked away.

For the first time since she arrived, something fragile entered the silence between them.

Not tension.

Not anger.

Something older.

Sadder.

”Regret what?”

The question was quiet.

Adrian almost laughed.

Not because anything was amusing.

Because they both knew exactly what he meant.

”Us.”

The word settled heavily between them.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Outside, somewhere beyond the palace walls, the capital continued about its day.

Inside, eighteen years sat between them.

Waiting.

Marian lowered her eyes briefly.

Then looked back at him.

The answer came slowly.

Carefully.

Honest enough to hurt.

”No.”

The word landed softly.

And somehow that made it worse.

Adrian said nothing.

Marian continued.

”I regret how it ended.”

A pause.

”I regret that we hurt each other.”

Another.

”I regret many things.”

Her voice softened.

The faint smile disappeared.

Leaving only sincerity.

”But I don’t regret the choice.”

There it was.

The answer.

The real answer.

Not confusion.

Not impulse.

Not manipulation.

Not misunderstanding.

Choice.

Marian had chosen.

Knowingly.

Deliberately.

Completely.

The realization settled into place.

Cold.

Unavoidable.

For months Adrian had constructed explanations.

Possibilities.

Excuses.

Now Marian dismantled every one of them with a single sentence.

But I don’t regret the choice.

Silence followed.

Long.

Heavy.

Final.

Marian did not look away.

Neither did he.

The honesty between them felt almost unbearable.

Eventually Adrian exhaled slowly.

The sound seemed unusually loud.

”He’s fortunate.”

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Marian’s expression changed.

Surprise.

Then something softer.

Warmer.

The look itself proved irritating.

Entirely because Adrian understood it.

”You don’t have to say that.”

”No.”

He almost smiled.

Almost.

”But it’s true.”

Marian looked down.

For the first time since entering the room.

Her hand rested quietly in her lap.

The ring caught the light.

Ashford’s ring.

The sight immediately ruined his mood.

An unfortunate development.

Marian noticed his gaze.

Instinctively.

Of course she did.

Slowly, her fingers curled around the ring.

Not hiding it.

Not displaying it.

Simply protecting it.

The movement lasted less than a second.

Yet Adrian saw it.

And understood.

The realization settled poorly.

Very poorly.

Because she hadn’t even thought about it.

The gesture had been instinctive.

Natural.

The sort of movement people made when guarding something precious.

Something they loved.

Something they refused to lose.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Marian rose first.

The movement surprised him.

Then he realized the conversation was over.

Of course it was.

What more remained to be said?

Nothing.

Nothing at all.

She curtsied.

Perfectly proper.

Perfectly distant.

Yet somehow kinder than before.

”Thank you for seeing me, Your Highness.”

The title returned.

Adrian found he disliked it just as much as before.

”Lady Marian.”

Marian hesitated.

Just briefly.

Then smiled.

The same smile she had worn countless times throughout their childhood.

The same smile that once belonged entirely to him.

Now it belonged to someone else.

The realization lingered.

Marian turned.

Walked toward the door.

And left.

Just like that.

The room fell silent.

Adrian remained seated.

The chair opposite him now empty.

The conversation finished.

The future unchanged.

His gaze dropped.

The memory arrived immediately.

The ring.

Ashford’s ring.

On Marian’s hand.

The image refused to leave.

Adrian closed his eyes.

The effort accomplished nothing.

A familiar problem.

Slowly, he opened them again.

The room remained empty.

Marian was gone.

And for the first time, Adrian understood something he had spent months refusing to acknowledge.

If he wanted her back—

she would not come willingly.

The realization should have ended the matter.

Instead, it only made the obstacle clearer.

And for the first time, Adrian found himself wondering what a man was willing to do when the thing he wanted most had already chosen someone else.
