Transmigrating Into a Book, the Villain Becomes the White Moonlight!

108: Chapter 18 Caring about her? These words sounded high-minded, but any discerning person could tell that the young men around were merely props; Mr. Nangong’s target from the start was Su Bai.

Seeing Su Bai’s attention on Mu Xue seemingly confirm his judgment, Mr. Nangong was ecstatic.

The Nangong Family’s current fatal financial hole would have to be filled by firmly tying Su Bai, this big tree, to Mu Xue, his trump card.

After exchanging contact information, the atmosphere seemed lively.

Su Bai then seemed to suddenly remember something, leaning back slightly, casually fiddling with his watch strap, and asked in a casual, nonchalant tone,

Hearing Su Bai’s question, a barely perceptible gleam flashed in Mr. Nangong’s eyes, and he secretly rejoiced.

He was just racking his brain on how to subtly steer the conversation towards his real predicament, and unexpectedly, Su Bai took the initiative to bring it up!

Su Bai’s sudden withdrawal from the auction earlier had indeed disrupted his rhythm, giving him a cold sweat.

While the blood diamond was priceless, such a rare treasure of that caliber had a price but no market. Buyers truly willing and able to shell out tens of billions in cash for a stone were extremely rare.

His original plan was to bundle the diamond with Mu Xue, who had just returned to the Nangong Family and had a past relationship with Su Bai, using Su Bai’s possible rekindled feelings or male pride to entice him to bid an exorbitant price.

As long as Su Bai bought it, that huge sum would be enough for the Nangong Family to catch its breath and weather the most severe financial crisis at the end of the year.

But Su Bai didn’t follow the script. Now that the diamond hadn’t sold, they had to find another way.

”Not entirely, actually,” Mr. Nangong said, putting on the usual somewhat helpless smile of a businessman.

”There are also some business errands to handle. To be frank, Young Master Su, my auction company overseas is currently preparing for an IPO and needs to introduce some strategic investments to expand its scale and increase its valuation. This return is also to see if there are suitable partners domestically.”

Su Bai feigned enlightenment, nodded, and then, as if casually, mentioned, ”Oh, IPO financing... Then the friend who bid 51 billion for the blood diamond at the auction just now, that capital should be a considerable boost for Mr. Nangong’s company, right?”

He even pretended to look around, ”Hey, where’s the friend who bid earlier? Didn’t Mr. Nangong invite him to come and appreciate the collectibles together? I wanted to get to know him.”

This question was tricky.

Su Bai knew perfectly well that the Nangong Family’s current financial situation was far from glorious IPO financing; it was probably a desperate situation.

The families in A City, and even the entire country, that could lend a helping hand were few and far between, but no one was a philanthropist.

Counting the time, the news of the collection action arranged by Butler Fu should have already reached Mr. Nangong’s ears.

He must be burning with anxiety right now, yet he had to feign composure and not show weakness in front of Su Bai, his potential savior.

Mr. Nangong’s facial muscles stiffened for a moment, then he chuckled, ”Oh, him... After bidding, he naturally went to handle the subsequent handover and paperwork; it’s quite tedious.”

He quickly moved past the topic, his gaze softening as he looked at Mu Xue beside him:

”To be honest, at my age, I sometimes feel tired of all these business matters. I’m truly happy to have found Xue’er again this time. I was thinking that after the company stabilizes, I can gradually transfer these industries under my name to her. It’s a small compensation from me, as a father, for all the years I’ve owed her.”

Su Bai smiled and didn’t respond. For the next ten minutes, the conversation returned to the collectibles.

And Su Bai, giving face, cooperated with the atmosphere Mr. Nangong was creating, naturally moving his steps to stand beside Mu Xue.

A polite distance separated the two; there was no communication, not even eye contact, but this posture of standing side-by-side alone was enough to deepen the smile in Mr. Nangong’s eyes.

As they parted, Mr. Nangong specifically instructed, ”Xue’er, please see Young Master Su off.”

Mu Xue pursed her lips, said nothing, and silently followed half a step behind Su Bai, walking out of the banquet hall.

The journey was silent, with only the faint sounds of high heels and leather shoes on the carpet.

Leaving the main hall and arriving at a relatively secluded corridor corner connected to the outdoor viewing platform, Su Bai stopped.

”There’s something I need to tell you,” Su Bai turned to face Mu Xue.

”What do you want?” Mu Xue subconsciously frowned, still bothered by the embarrassment at the hotel and the lingering anger from her argument with Lin Wan.

This guy, showing up with his fiancée in front of her, and now calling her aside alone, what did he want to say?

Despite her inner discomfort, her feet seemed to have a mind of their own, stopping with him, and she even unconsciously turned her body towards him, adopting a listening posture.

Su Bai looked at the lingering resentment on her face and her feigned indifference, paused, and then said, ”This morning... at the hotel, what I said, I didn’t mean it that way.”

His pace was slightly slower than usual, as if choosing his words, ”Next time... you should drink less. It’s not safe outside.”

As his words fell, Mu Xue froze.

She widened her eyes slightly, as if she had heard something incredible, her pupils clearly reflecting Su Bai’s expressionless face, which subtly revealed a hint of seriousness.

Her thoughts instantly became chaotic.

What did this mean?

Was he... caring for her?

Or was he... apologizing for those harsh words this morning?

She had only heard Su Bai’s almost gentle tone on very rare, specific occasions in her memory—in a hotel suite, the lights dim, body temperatures scorching.

He would occasionally, in the most intimate moments, call her name or utter some incomplete, heart-pounding phrases in a similar low, muffled tone.

”None of your business,” Mu Xue retorted almost immediately, but her voice lacked its usual confidence.

She quickly turned halfway, unconsciously wrapping her arms around herself, her gaze shifting to the deep night outside the transparent glass door at the end of the corridor.

”Also,” Su Bai seemed not to notice her reaction, continuing in his steady tone, but the content suddenly became serious, ”If the Nangong Family asks you to sign any documents, especially those involving property transfer, authorization, or debt guarantees, you must stall. Find a way to stall, at least until after this month.”

Mu Xue wasn’t foolish.

Aside from matters of the heart, her perceptiveness in other areas was not low, just like when she was a pawn for Lin Wan, she saw through the whole situation almost at a glance.

A year ago, when the Nangong Family found her, from initial surprise to gradually sensing a certain ulterior motive mixed with their kindness, plus today’s auction which clearly placed her in the spotlight and tied her to a sky-high diamond... all these signs had long made her suspicious.

Su Bai’s sudden return to the country seemed to connect these scattered doubts, but the most crucial link was still missing.
