I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 236: Chapter 234: How Do You Know Everything?

Zhang Bai had been muttering to himself, trying to figure out how they knew about the waste disposal plant. He listed off many names, including the person in charge of the plant.

He would mention a name, only to dismiss it himself.

”It’s like King Yan taking roll call,” Lu Zhishen said.

Su Miaoyi nodded, feeling his description was spot on.

Everyone connected to the waste disposal plant was brought in, including those who weren’t at the plant last night.

Some knew what was going on, and some didn’t.

They all needed to be interrogated.

The innocent couldn’t be framed, nor could any of the guilty be allowed to escape. More importantly, they had to distinguish the truly innocent from those merely feigning innocence.

These people Zhang Bai was naming—if he wasn’t intentionally framing them, then they were definitely in on it, perhaps even participants.

Zhuang Yanzheng listened to him shouting and muttering to himself, jotting down each name as it was spoken.

After a good while, Zhang Bai grew tired of shouting and leaned back in his chair, panting heavily.

Zhuang Yanzheng said to the officer beside him, ”Get him a cup of water.”

They poured him a cup of water in a paper cup.

Zhang Bai stared at the cup, swallowed hard, and after a moment, grabbed it and drank it all down.

”Want more?” Zhuang Yanzheng asked.

”Yeah,” Zhang Bai said, holding out the cup.

They poured him another, and he drank it all again.

”Take a break,” Zhuang Yanzheng said.

The paper cup was taken from his hand. Zhang Bai looked at Zhuang Yanzheng.

Zhuang Yanzheng looked down at the names he had written.

His eyes hadn’t fully recovered yet, but they were a bit better than yesterday, allowing him to see a little more clearly.

Zhang Bai just watched him for a while before finally asking, ”How did you find out?”

”And what if you knew?” Zhuang Yanzheng looked up at him. ”You’re already here, the necessary arrests have been made, and the entire waste disposal plant has been sealed off. What’s the point of you knowing now?”

Zhang Bai suddenly fell silent.

The powerlessness after his outburst and the reality of his current situation left him speechless.

The outcome was already set.

He had thought the drug lab was perfectly hidden. Even if he died or was captured, as long as they couldn’t find the lab, he wouldn’t have considered himself defeated.

But now...

Zhuang Yanzheng looked at him, decided the time was right, and began his questioning. ”Why did you go to kill Kang Hong?”

Zhang Bai stared at him, holding his gaze for a long moment before slowly uttering, ”Why would I want to kill Kang Hong?”

”Then what were you doing at the hospital?”

”Saving him,” Zhang Bai said.

”Saving him?”

”Why would I kill him? I was certain he couldn’t say anything that would threaten me. On the contrary, I needed him. The drug lab needed him. I was going to get him out.”

”Rescuing someone right under the noses of the police?” Su Miaoyi was shocked.

Lu Zhishen was also speechless. ”I told you he wasn’t all there.”

”Kang Hong may have been so high he barely looked human, but he was very useful.” Zhang Bai sighed, his voice already losing its energy. ”He had no sense of direction. I could even switch locations, build two places to look almost identical, tell him we just swapped out some equipment, and he’d believe it. He always thought it was the same place. Someone that stupid, easy to control, greedy, and yet still able to help me—of course I was going to save him.”

”Besides, you’re all a bunch of useless trash. Saving one person should have been easy.”

”Was it easy? Then why are you here right now?” Zhuang Yanzheng said.

”If it weren’t for you...” Zhang Bai looked at him, then paused. ”If it weren’t for that female officer, why would I be here?”

At this, Zhang Bai suddenly grew agitated again. ”She’s as hard as steel! She looks completely harmless, but her strength, her speed! She’s a total brute!”

Zhuang Yanzheng tapped the table. ”Just answer the questions I ask!”

Zhang Bai shut his mouth.

”Where did Ding Ruoyan and her parents go?” Zhuang Yanzheng didn’t directly ask if he had killed them.

Hearing the name, Zhang Bai suddenly broke into a sinister grin. ”Dead.”

Zhuang Yanzheng watched his expression. ”Dead?”

”Yep,” Zhang Bai said with a smile. ”Into the shredder at the waste disposal plant...”

Zhuang Yanzheng’s brow furrowed slightly.

”A family of three—oh, no, wait, a family of four. Threw them all in.” Zhang Bai chuckled. ”Not a single bone left...”

”Why kill them?” Zhuang Yanzheng asked.

His reaction stunned Zhang Bai for a moment. ”Why are you reacting like that? Why aren’t you surprised at all? You knew? You knew again?! How did you know? Besides me, only Zhang Yan Yu knew about this! How did you know!”

”Why did you kill them?” Zhuang Yanzheng didn’t answer him.

Zhang Bai was extremely dissatisfied with his reaction and started panting heavily again in anger.

Zhuang Yanzheng was also observing his reactions. ”What was between Zhang Yan Yu and your mother?”

Zhang Bai stared at him in disbelief.

”How do you know everything? You even know about my mother? Why?” Zhang Bai asked.

”He wronged your mother,” Zhuang Yanzheng said.

”He did wrong my mother! How dare he even mention her!” Zhang Bai shouted. ”He was always out, never coming home to be with us. It was so, so hard for my mother to take care of me. And him? He found a new love outside and didn’t want my mother anymore. If he didn’t want her, he could have just divorced her. But no, he had to kill her.”

”What did my mother do wrong? She worked so hard to raise me, only to be killed by him in the end. Did he even treat my mother like a human being? He married her when he had no money, then tossed her aside when he got rich. He was worried she would cling to him, that she would fight him for my custody, so he killed her and got rid of her. Is that what a human does? That’s the work of an animal!”

Zhang Bai’s gaze turned vicious. ”He thought I didn’t know, but I knew everything. All these years, I’ve just been pretending to be a filial son. I played my part so well that he trusted me completely, handing over all of Jinghai to me.”

”What a perfect opportunity. I made everything his into my own. Once I had the power to fight back against him, of course I wouldn’t let him off. My mother is gone, so what right does he have to have a wife and child by his side! He can forget about it!”

Zhang Bai suddenly exclaimed, ”I know!”

His sudden shout startled both Su Miaoyi and Lu Zhishen.

Zhang Bai laughed maniacally. ”You must be wanting to ask right now, if I hate Zhang Yan Yu, why didn’t I just kill him? Why kill other people?”

He continued to laugh. ”If I killed Zhang Yan Yu, he’d just be dead. What’s the fun in that? He wouldn’t know a thing. Only by killing the people he holds dear can he suffer for eternity! And while he’s suffering, he won’t be able to let go of the product I control. So he’ll have to be disgusted and filled with hatred while still taking the product from my hands. He won’t be able to do anything else.”

”That kind of suffering is what’s interesting! More interesting than death!”
