I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 205: Chapter 203: Too Dangerous

Su Miaoyi’s mind kept returning to Kang Hong.

When Kang Hong was going through withdrawal, he kept saying he’d confess everything. But when they actually questioned him, he wasn’t clear about anything.

’He’s hiding something.’

The investigation was still ongoing and would take time.

What they would ultimately uncover, no one knew yet.

Judging by his apartment, Kang Hong was very wealthy.

But the fact that they couldn’t trace where his money came from or where it went meant there was a huge problem.

Who knew what else this would drag out into the open.

Kang Hong had been taken away from here, and all the neighbors had seen it.

In the last half-day, the news had probably spread throughout their entire complex and even the one next door.

And who knows how the story had been twisted in the telling.

Drug dealers are inhuman. They’re capable of anything.

This apartment complex didn’t have a security guard. Anyone could come and go as they pleased.

Forget the complex—even the building itself had no restrictions. Anyone could just walk in.

Someone could even climb in through a window.

’This place is just too dangerous.’

”I agree with my sis,” Cheng Jue said. ”We move tomorrow. Even if we can’t get all our stuff, we can stay somewhere else first. We can’t risk our lives.”

Cheng Yong and Ge Yu both looked at him.

”This place is slated for demolition this year anyway,” Cheng Jue said. ”We have to move eventually, whether it’s sooner or later.”

Su Miaoyi nodded. ”Cheng Jue is right. We have to move eventually. Let’s do it tomorrow.”

”But... what about the shop your uncle and I run?” Ge Yu asked, worried. ”Where would we move? And what would the two of us do for work after we move?”

”That’s right,” Cheng Yong fretted as well.

”Mom, Dad, you’re still worried about the shop right now? Is that more important than your lives?” Cheng Jue looked astonished, stopping just short of telling them to get their priorities straight.

”I’ll arrange for a place to live,” Su Miaoyi said. ”As for the shop... I’ll ask around at a nearby supermarket or someplace. We’ll find a solution.”

”Exactly,” Cheng Jue added. ”Even if we don’t move now, we’ll have to when this place gets torn down, and we’ll face the same issues. It’s better to solve them now than wait until we’re forced to.”

”Right. And don’t worry about Cheng Jue’s tuition. I’ve already prepared it,” Su Miaoyi said.

”No, no, your uncle and I have some savings from over the years. It’s more than enough for his tuition,” Ge Yu said. ”That’s not what I’m worried about. It’s... oh, I don’t know how to explain it. We’ve lived here for half our lives. To suddenly have to leave... it just feels awful.”

”It always felt like the demolition was still a ways off,” Cheng Yong said. ”Being told we have to leave now feels a bit sudden.”

”I’ve already saved up for my own tuition. I don’t need your money,” Cheng Jue said.

The other three all looked at him.

”I don’t really spend money on anything. Sis gives me money all the time, and I’ve just been saving it,” Cheng Jue said with a smile. ”She’s given me so much since she started working.”

”You little brat.” Ge Yu was close enough to give him a light smack.

It hurt, and Cheng Jue straightened up to rub his back. ”Mom, you actually hit me for real.”

Cheng Yong shot him a look.

The four of them fell silent for a moment.

”Let’s move,” Cheng Jue said. ”Let’s pack. Right now. Pack the essentials, the things we’ll need, and we’ll move out at dawn.”

”Move out at dawn? Move to where?” Cheng Yong asked.

Cheng Jue was caught short and looked over at Su Miaoyi.

Su Miaoyi said, ”Let’s get some sleep first. We’ll pack tomorrow and move tomorrow.”

”Alright.” Cheng Jue gave a grand wave of his hand. ”Meeting adjourned.”

Su Miaoyi and Cheng Jue left the room and exchanged a look.

”Sis.” Cheng Jue clapped a hand on her shoulder. ”We have to leave eventually. Now’s as good a time as any.”

”You’re okay with moving?” Su Miaoyi asked, looking at him.

”Not really. You know what they say, there’s no place like home,” Cheng Jue said. ”But... we really can’t live here anymore. Dad’s been hauling goods for years and his back is shot, and Mom’s knees are bad. There’s no elevator, so going up and down the stairs is a huge pain. When I first heard about the demolition, I was sad at first, but then I was happy. It’s the only thing that could ever get them to move out of here. Otherwise, those two would probably want to live here forever.”

Su Miaoyi said nothing.

Cheng Jue continued, ”Plus, when the building is torn down, there will be a compensation payout. So I don’t think they need to worry. It’ll be good for them not to work. In the future, when I’m busy, they can even come with me to the film set.”

”You’ve got it all planned out, haven’t you?” Su Miaoyi remarked.

”I’ve thought about all of it,” Cheng Jue said. ”Don’t worry.”

”I’m afraid Uncle and Aunt will be too upset to sleep tonight,” Su Miaoyi said.

”They’ll get over it. Go get some sleep.” Cheng Jue pushed her to her bedroom door, opened it, and gestured inside. ”After you.”

Su Miaoyi turned to look at him. After a few seconds, her gaze drifted downward.

A few seconds later, Cheng Jue followed her gaze, looked down at himself, and immediately crossed his arms over his chest. ”What are you looking at?”

Su Miaoyi rolled her eyes. ”A kid’s body.”

Cheng Jue thumped his own chest. ”What nonsense are you spouting? I’m all muscle!”

He slapped his bicep for emphasis.

Su Miaoyi pushed him out and shut the door mercilessly in his face.

Outside, Cheng Jue clicked his tongue and headed back to his own room.

Su Miaoyi, meanwhile, contacted Shen Yanzhou. She asked him to help find a secure apartment, one they could move into the very next day.

Meanwhile, after Su Miaoyi and Cheng Jue had left, Cheng Yong and Ge Yu sat on the edge of their bed, not having moved an inch.

The couple was silent for a long time.

Finally, Cheng Yong said, ”Jue is right. We have to move, whether it’s now or later.”

”But it’s so sudden. I can’t bear to leave,” Ge Yu said, looking at him. ”We’ve lived here ever since we got married. Cheng Jue grew up here. Miaomiao grew up here, too.”

”Let’s move,” Cheng Yong said after a moment of silence. ”For Miaomiao to say something like this, it must be really dangerous. We can’t risk our lives.”

Ge Yu said nothing.

Cheng Yong fell silent again for a moment. ”We were only thinking about how much we’d miss this place. We didn’t think about Miaomiao at all.”

Ge Yu looked at him.

”The truth is, she’s the one in the most danger. Judging by what happened today, her job is far more dangerous than we ever imagined,” Cheng Yong said. ”If those criminals came after us, it would be to get revenge on her.”

Ge Yu gripped his arm. ”Miaomiao’s in so much danger! Why did she choose a job like this? It’s too dangerous! We’d only be secondary targets. They’d go after Miaomiao first.”

Cheng Yong nodded. ”Miaomiao is destined for great things; we can’t hold her back. As for today, even if she hadn’t called the police, we would have if we’d known. There can be zero tolerance for things like this. Let’s move. Only when she has no worries on the home front can Miaomiao truly focus.”

”Move. We’ll move,” Ge Yu said decisively. ”I’ll start packing now. We’ll move tomorrow.”

”The walls are so thin. Let’s just pack tomorrow,” Cheng Yong said.

”I can’t sleep,” Ge Yu said. ”I’ll be quiet. I’ll just pack the things that won’t make much noise.”

Cheng Yong nodded again. ”I’ll help. I can’t sleep either.”

”We’ll definitely have to rent a new place after we move. We absolutely can’t let Miaomiao pay for it.”

”I know.”
