Adrian stared at the words.

YOU WERE NEVER THE SUBJECT.

YOU WERE THE QUESTION.

AND WE HAVE FINALLY FOUND THE ANSWER.

Nobody spoke.

The house was completely dark.

Outside, the city continued moving as though nothing had happened.

Inside, Adrian couldn’t hear anything except his own breathing.

His mother slowly stepped toward him.

”Adrian.”

He looked at her.

”Who asked the question?”

She didn’t answer.

His father did.

”I don’t know.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

”You know more than you’re saying.”

His father looked at him for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

”Yes.”

His mother turned toward him.

”You remember?”

”I remember something.”

”What?”

His father looked toward the dark window.

”Before Adrian.”

Adrian felt something tighten in his chest.

”Before me?”

”Before your identity.”

The room seemed colder.

His father continued.

”There was a question.”

”What question?”

He looked directly at Adrian.

”Whether something could exist without being told that it should.”

Adrian frowned.

”That’s what the first witness wanted to know.”

”No.”

His father’s voice was quiet.

”The first witness wanted to know what would happen.”

Adrian stared at him.

”Then who asked the question?”

His father didn’t answer immediately.

Cael stepped closer.

”Father.”

His father looked at him.

”Tell him.”

A long silence followed.

Finally, his father said,

”The questioner.”

Adrian almost laughed.

”That’s a terrible name.”

”I know.”

”Then give me a better one.”

”I can’t.”

”Why?”

”Because it never had one.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

She looked away.

That was enough.

”You knew.”

His mother closed her eyes.

”Not everything.”

”But you knew there was something before me.”

”Yes.”

”Why didn’t you tell me?”

”Because you were happy.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

”That’s not an answer.”

”It was the only one I had.”

His mother stepped closer.

”When you finally became Adrian, you were happy with the smallest things. Food. Rain. People talking. Your father coming home. Echo asking stupid questions.”

Echo frowned.

”I don’t ask stupid questions.”

Adrian looked at him.

”You once asked whether a chair could become a person.”

Echo crossed his arms.

”That was important.”

Despite everything, Adrian smiled.

His mother continued.

”I didn’t want you to spend your life wondering whether someone had created you for a reason.”

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

”But someone did.”

”No.”

She shook her head.

”Someone asked.”

The distinction mattered.

Adrian could feel it.

Creation was an act.

A question was an invitation.

Something had asked whether he could exist.

And something else had answered.

His father.

Adrian looked at him.

”You answered.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

His father smiled faintly.

”Because you asked.”

Adrian shook his head.

”No. Why did you answer?”

His father’s expression changed.

”I was afraid you would disappear if nobody did.”

Silence.

That sentence hit harder than Adrian expected.

His father continued.

”You were not a person yet.”

He paused.

”You were barely a possibility.”

”You heard me?”

”Yes.”

”What did I say?”

His father looked toward the ceiling.

”You asked whether you were allowed to leave.”

Adrian remembered.

The white room.

The endless emptiness.

The feeling of standing somewhere without having a body.

The woman.

The answer.

Then—

his father’s voice.

Is anyone there?

Adrian had always thought that was his first question.

It wasn’t.

His father had been the one who asked it.

Adrian had answered by existing.

A shiver moved through him.

”I thought I asked first.”

”You did.”

”Then why did you ask after me?”

His father smiled.

”Because I was answering you.”

Adrian stared at him.

The pieces finally connected.

His first question had not been spoken in words.

It had been a desire.

A need.

A question that existed before language.

Am I allowed to leave?

His father had heard it.

And instead of telling him what to do—

he had asked another question.

Is anyone there?

Adrian had answered.

Yes.

Not with words.

With existence.

His mother sat down.

”That was the first connection.”

Adrian looked at her.

”And the Questioner?”

His mother became silent.

Cael answered.

”It came before that.”

Adrian turned.

Cael looked uncomfortable.

”I don’t know what it is.”

”But you know something.”

”I know what it did.”

”What?”

Cael swallowed.

”It asked a question that nobody could answer.”

Adrian waited.

Cael looked at the dark windows.

”Why?”

Adrian frowned.

”Why what?”

”Why should anything exist?”

The room went silent.

That question was different.

It wasn’t about identity.

It wasn’t about choice.

It wasn’t about purpose.

It questioned existence itself.

Adrian felt the weight of it.

His father spoke.

”And nothing could answer.”

”Then what happened?”

”Something did.”

Adrian looked at him.

”What?”

His father shook his head.

”We don’t know.”

”That’s impossible.”

”It happened before possibility.”

Cael’s eyes widened.

Adrian understood.

Before the Before.

Before Choice.

Before Origin.

Before possibility itself.

Something had asked why existence should exist.

And somehow—

something answered.

The result was existence.

Adrian looked at the message again.

YOU WERE THE QUESTION.

His heart began beating faster.

”No.”

Everyone looked at him.

Adrian stared at the words.

”I wasn’t the question.”

His mother frowned.

”What do you mean?”

”I wasn’t the question.”

He pointed toward the message.

”They said I was.”

His eyes narrowed.

”But I wasn’t.”

Cael stepped closer.

”Adrian?”

Adrian looked at him.

”I was the answer.”

Silence.

The realization moved through the room.

The first question was—

Why should anything exist?

The answer wasn’t a sentence.

It was existence itself.

Then came possibility.

Then identity.

Then choice.

Then Adrian.

Adrian wasn’t the first question.

He was a consequence of the answer.

The thing that existed because existence had answered itself.

His father slowly nodded.

”Yes.”

Adrian looked at him.

”You knew.”

”I suspected.”

”That’s different.”

”Not anymore.”

Adrian turned toward the window.

The words disappeared.

The house lights came back on.

Everything returned to normal.

But Adrian couldn’t.

He understood something now.

The Audience had been watching him because they believed he was the question.

The first witness had watched him because it wanted to know whether a possibility could become a person.

The woman had watched the witness.

And something had watched her.

Layer after layer.

Observer after observer.

But none of them had been watching the beginning.

They had all been watching the answer.

Something had been looking for the question that came before existence.

And it had finally mistaken Adrian for it.

Or perhaps—

it hadn’t.

Adrian looked at his father.

”What if they weren’t wrong?”

His father became still.

”What?”

”What if I really am the question?”

His mother stood.

”Adrian.”

”No.”

He shook his head.

”Think about it.”

He began walking around the room.

”Everything before me was asking something.”

He counted on his fingers.

”Choice asked what could be chosen.”

”Origin asked what could begin.”

”Identity asked what something could become.”

”Existence asked why anything should be.”

He stopped.

”And I asked whether I was allowed to leave.”

His father stared at him.

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

”Maybe that’s the question.”

Cael shook his head.

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because you stayed.”

Adrian looked at him.

Cael smiled.

”That’s the answer.”

Adrian didn’t speak.

Then Echo walked over.

He tugged Adrian’s sleeve.

”Can I ask something?”

Adrian looked down.

”Sure.”

”Who is watching us now?”

Everyone went silent.

Adrian slowly looked toward the window.

There was no sky visible from that angle.

Only darkness.

Then—

a knock came from the front door.

Three times.

Nobody moved.

Knock.

Adrian’s father immediately stood.

His mother moved the children behind her.

Cael looked toward the door.

”I don’t see a possibility.”

Adrian frowned.

”What do you mean?”

”There is nobody outside.”

The knocking continued.

Knock.

Adrian walked toward the door.

His father grabbed his arm.

”Don’t.”

Adrian looked at him.

”What if it isn’t a person?”

”That’s exactly why you shouldn’t open it.”

Another knock.

Then a voice.

A very young voice.

”Are you there?”

Adrian froze.

He knew that voice.

Everyone did.

It was the voice that had followed him since the beginning.

The same voice from the white room.

The same voice that had asked the first question.

Adrian’s father went pale.

His mother whispered,

”No.”

Adrian opened the door.

There was no one there.

Only a small wooden box sitting on the doorstep.

Adrian picked it up.

There was a symbol carved into the lid.

A circle.

Inside it was a single line.

The same symbol he had seen on the oldest door.

The symbol of the first question.

Adrian opened the box.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

Three words.

YOU ASKED FIRST.

Adrian stared at them.

Then another line appeared beneath them.

BUT YOU WEREN’T ALONE.

The paper burned away.

Adrian looked up.

Across the street, under a broken streetlight, someone was standing.

A child.

Small.

Barefoot.

Wearing clothes that looked older than the city itself.

Adrian stared at him.

The child stared back.

Then smiled.

”You remembered.”

Adrian stepped forward.

”Who are you?”

The child tilted his head.

”You know.”

”No.”

”You do.”

Adrian’s heartbeat increased.

The child raised one finger.

”You were there.”

”Where?”

”Before the question.”

Adrian stopped.

The child smiled wider.

”Before existence.”

Everything around Adrian seemed to disappear.

His family.

The city.

The street.

The sound.

Everything.

Only the child remained.

The child pointed at Adrian’s chest.

”You weren’t created.”

Adrian said nothing.

”You weren’t born.”

Still nothing.

”You weren’t chosen.”

The child’s smile disappeared.

”You answered.”

Adrian felt something inside himself crack open.

A memory.

Not one from before identity.

Not one from the white room.

Something older.

Impossible.

A place with no space.

No time.

No existence.

And there—

Adrian heard a question.

Not from someone.

From nowhere.

Why?

Then Adrian remembered his answer.

Not a word.

Not a choice.

Not a name.

A single desire.

I want to know.

The memory vanished.

Adrian fell to one knee.

His family ran toward him.

But the child was already gone.

Only one sentence remained on the road.

Written in the dust.

THE QUESTIONER WAS NEVER LOOKING FOR YOU.

Adrian stared at it.

A second sentence appeared.

IT WAS LOOKING THROUGH YOU.

And somewhere beyond the world—

something finally spoke.

”Adrian.”

He looked up.

The voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

It sounded exactly like him.

”I remember asking.”

Adrian’s blood went cold.

Because the voice continued.

”And now...”

A pause.

”...I remember why.”
