Every star in existence disappeared.

Not dimmed.

Not extinguished.

Gone.

Adrian stood in complete darkness.

He couldn’t see his mother.

Couldn’t see his brother.

Couldn’t see the Guardian, Eve, Elia, Noah, Ryan, or Aeron.

For the first time since the beginning of everything he had remembered, there was no light anywhere.

Then Adrian heard breathing.

His own.

Slow.

Uneven.

Human.

He reached forward.

His fingers touched someone’s hand.

”Adrian.”

His mother’s voice.

He grabbed her hand.

”I’m here.”

”I know.”

Her fingers tightened around his.

”Don’t let go.”

Adrian had never heard her say those words before.

Not to him.

Not to anyone.

The darkness shifted.

A faint sound echoed through it.

One step.

Then another.

Something was approaching.

Adrian looked toward the sound.

Nothing.

Yet somehow he knew exactly where it was.

The shadow that had stepped through the doorway was standing a few meters away.

It had no body.

No face.

No eyes.

And yet Adrian felt it looking at him.

The old man spoke.

”You came back.”

The shadow stopped.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a voice answered.

”I never left.”

Adrian’s mother shuddered.

The old man lowered his head.

”You were sealed beyond the Beginning.”

”No.”

The voice was calm.

”I was waiting beyond it.”

Adrian frowned.

”Waiting for what?”

The darkness moved around him.

The voice answered.

”For you.”

Adrian felt his mother’s grip tighten.

”Why me?”

”Because you are the one who ended the Creator.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

”I didn’t destroy everything.”

”No.”

”You know that.”

”I know.”

”Then what do you want?”

The shadow moved closer.

And suddenly Adrian could see something.

Not the creature.

A memory.

A single moment.

Before worlds.

Before the First Choice.

Before the Before.

There was nothing.

Absolute nothing.

Then something appeared.

Not a person.

Not a thought.

A question.

Should there be anything?

Adrian stared.

The question hung in the darkness.

Then another appeared.

Should the question continue?

A third.

Should there be someone capable of answering it?

Adrian’s breath caught.

He understood.

The Beginning wasn’t the beginning.

Choice wasn’t the beginning.

The Before weren’t the beginning.

Even the Origin wasn’t the beginning.

Something had existed before all of them.

Not existence.

Not possibility.

Not choice.

A question.

The shadow spoke.

”I was the first question.”

Adrian’s entire body went still.

His mother whispered:

”No.”

The shadow continued.

”Before the First Choice, there was a question.”

Adrian remembered his own journey.

He had always believed he was the first question.

The First Choice had called him that.

His mother had called him that.

The Origin had called him that.

But now...

Someone else had been there first.

Adrian looked toward the shadow.

”Then I’m not the first question.”

”No.”

The answer was immediate.

”You are the first question that chose to remain.”

The words struck him harder than anything else.

The shadow continued.

”I asked whether anything should continue.”

”And what happened?”

”I waited.”

”For what?”

”For an answer.”

Adrian looked around the darkness.

”And nobody answered?”

”Nobody existed to answer.”

The shadow paused.

”So I answered myself.”

The darkness trembled.

”I chose yes.”

A single point of light appeared.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

Then another.

The stars began returning.

But they weren’t stars.

They were choices.

Millions.

Billions.

Trillions.

Every decision made by every living thing.

Every person who had chosen to wake up.

Every creature that had chosen to survive.

Every child who had chosen a name.

Every person who had chosen forgiveness.

Every being that had ever said:

I want to exist.

Adrian stared at the lights.

”You started everything.”

”No.”

The shadow corrected him.

”I permitted the possibility of everything.”

The old man suddenly laughed.

It was a quiet, broken laugh.

”So all this time...”

He looked at the shadow.

”You weren’t the Creator.”

”No.”

”Then what were you?”

The shadow answered:

”The question that refused to disappear.”

Adrian felt something inside him shift.

Aeris.

Adrian.

The Nameless.

The Creator.

The human.

The child.

All of them had been searching for an answer to the same problem.

Why did anything exist?

But perhaps existence had never been the answer.

Perhaps existence was simply another question.

His brother stepped out of the darkness.

Adrian hadn’t even noticed him.

He stood beside their mother.

”So you’re the one who started the questions.”

The shadow turned toward him.

”Yes.”

His brother looked at Adrian.

”And he was the first one who answered.”

Adrian shook his head.

”I didn’t answer.”

”You chose.”

His brother smiled.

”That’s an answer.”

The shadow remained silent.

Then it turned toward Adrian’s mother.

She finally released Adrian’s hand.

”You came because of me.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”You left.”

She looked down.

”I was afraid.”

”I know.”

”I thought you had abandoned me.”

”I did.”

The old man’s expression changed.

”You didn’t abandon her?”

The shadow turned toward him.

”I abandoned nothing.”

”You were there.”

”Yes.”

”You watched her suffer.”

”Yes.”

”You watched her create children because she was lonely.”

”Yes.”

”You watched her erase them.”

”Yes.”

The old man’s voice became angry.

”Then why didn’t you stop her?”

The shadow answered quietly.

”Because stopping her would have been choosing for her.”

Silence.

The Guardian slowly stepped forward.

”So you believed freedom was more important than preventing suffering.”

The shadow looked at him.

”No.”

The Guardian frowned.

”Then what?”

”I believed she had the right to make mistakes.”

Adrian understood.

Choice had always carried consequence.

Freedom had never meant making the correct decision.

It meant having the right to make the wrong one.

His mother looked toward the shadow.

”And you abandoned me.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because you asked me to.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked at his mother.

”You asked him to leave?”

She closed her eyes.

”I was young.”

The shadow continued.

”She wanted to create without being watched.”

His mother whispered:

”I wanted to prove I could do it alone.”

”And you did.”

She looked at him.

”Then why did you return?”

The shadow turned toward Adrian.

”Because you finally reached the question that you were not ready to ask.”

Adrian’s heart began pounding.

”What question?”

The shadow raised one hand.

The world around them disappeared.

Adrian found himself standing somewhere else.

A small room.

White walls.

A wooden floor.

A young boy sat alone in the center.

Adrian recognized him.

Himself.

But younger.

Much younger.

The boy was holding a wooden car.

Aeris.

No.

Before Aeris.

Before Adrian.

Before identity.

His mother was standing in front of him.

She looked younger too.

She knelt down.

”What’s your name?”

The boy stared at her.

”I don’t know.”

”What do you want to be?”

The boy looked at the wooden car.

”I don’t know.”

”Then choose.”

The boy looked up.

And behind his mother stood the shadow.

Watching.

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

He had seen this memory before.

But never from outside.

The boy looked at the shadow.

”Are you my father?”

The shadow said nothing.

The young Adrian looked at his mother.

”Is he?”

His mother began crying.

”No.”

The boy looked confused.

”Then who is my father?”

The memory stopped.

Adrian stared.

His mother covered her mouth.

The shadow spoke.

”That was the question.”

Adrian slowly turned toward it.

”You were there when I asked.”

”Yes.”

”But you never answered.”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because the answer would have become your identity.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

”You wanted me to choose.”

”Yes.”

”And I chose Adrian.”

”Yes.”

”Not Aeris.”

”Yes.”

”Not Creator.”

”Yes.”

”Human.”

”Yes.”

Adrian looked down.

The wooden car was in his hand.

But now the symbol on it had changed.

There was no crown.

No eye.

No door.

No star.

No human hand.

Just a blank circle.

The shadow spoke again.

”Now you must make another choice.”

Adrian’s grip tightened.

”What choice?”

The darkness returned.

Every being he had ever known appeared around him.

His mother.

His brother.

The Nameless.

Elia.

Noah.

Ryan.

Aeron.

The Guardian.

Eve.

The forgotten children.

The Before.

The First Choice.

The old man.

Even Aeris.

All of them were watching him.

Then the shadow said:

”You have spent your entire existence asking whether you should continue.”

Adrian looked around.

”But now you must ask something else.”

The wooden car cracked.

The world shook.

A final message appeared.

ORIGIN QUESTION

Then:

IF YOU DID NOT CREATE EXISTENCE...

The letters disappeared.

A second sentence appeared.

AND EXISTENCE DID NOT CREATE YOU...

Adrian’s heart stopped.

The final words appeared.

WHO CHOSE YOU?

Silence.

Adrian looked at his mother.

She shook her head.

”I don’t know.”

He looked at the old man.

He didn’t answer.

He looked at Eve.

For the first time, even she looked uncertain.

He looked at the First Choice.

The ancient being lowered his eyes.

Then Adrian looked at the shadow.

”You did.”

The shadow said nothing.

Adrian stepped forward.

”You were the first question.”

Silence.

”You chose existence to continue.”

Silence.

”You created the possibility for Choice.”

Silence.

”But you didn’t choose me.”

The shadow finally moved.

”No.”

Adrian smiled.

”Then someone else did.”

The shadow became completely still.

Adrian’s mother suddenly looked at him.

”Adrian...”

He understood.

The answer wasn’t hidden in the Origin.

It wasn’t hidden in the Before.

It wasn’t hidden in the Creator.

It wasn’t even hidden in the shadow.

The answer was in the one thing nobody had considered.

A choice made by someone else.

Someone who had looked at the possibility of Adrian and decided:

Let him exist.

The darkness cracked.

A new doorway appeared.

Not ancient.

Not cosmic.

Not infinite.

Just a simple wooden door.

And behind it Adrian heard a familiar voice.

His father’s voice.

His actual father.

”Adrian.”

Adrian froze.

His mother stared at the door.

”No.”

The voice came again.

”Come home.”

Adrian slowly approached.

His mother grabbed his wrist.

”Don’t open it.”

Adrian looked at her.

”Why?”

She looked terrified.

”Because your father isn’t supposed to know you exist.”

The door handle moved.

And Adrian heard another voice from the other side.

A child’s voice.

His own.

”Father...”

The door opened.

And Adrian saw himself.

Not as Aeris.

Not as Adrian.

But as a newborn possibility.

Being held by a man he had spent his entire life believing was simply his father.

The man looked directly at Adrian.

And smiled.

”You finally remembered me.”

Adrian couldn’t breathe.

Because the man holding the infant wasn’t human.

And behind him stood the shadow.

Waiting.

Watching.

As if even the first question had been waiting for this moment.

Then his father whispered:

”Now ask the question you were never allowed to ask.”

Adrian stared at him.

”What am I?”

His father smiled.

”No.”

The world trembled.

”That was never the question.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

His father leaned closer.

”The real question is...”

The door slammed shut.

And every voice in existence disappeared.

”Why did I choose you?”
