The ocean split open.

Not like a wave.

Not like an earthquake.

The entire ocean seemed to separate from the middle, revealing a darkness so deep that Adrian couldn’t see the bottom.

The heartbeat continued.

Boom.

Every beat traveled through the world.

Aeron fell to one knee.

The Guardian looked toward the opening.

”What is that?”

Nobody answered.

Adrian’s father stepped backward.

His mother grabbed Adrian’s hand.

”Don’t go near it.”

Adrian looked at her.

”You said that before.”

”This is different.”

”How?”

She looked into the ocean.

”Because this time I don’t remember creating it.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

That was enough.

Something that his mother didn’t remember creating.

Something that existed before him.

Something that even his father feared.

The heartbeat came again.

Boom.

The surface of the ocean rose.

Something was underneath it.

Something enormous.

But it wasn’t rising like a creature.

It was rising like an idea.

The water began forming around it.

A shape appeared.

First, a head.

Then shoulders.

Then arms.

A human figure slowly emerged from the ocean.

Adrian stared.

It looked like a man.

Tall.

Thin.

Completely pale.

Its body was covered in cracks.

Not wounds.

Cracks.

As if it had been carved from something that had broken long ago.

Its face had no eyes.

No nose.

No mouth.

Yet Adrian knew it was looking at him.

The figure stepped onto the surface of the ocean.

The water didn’t move beneath its feet.

It simply stood there.

The heartbeat stopped.

Silence.

Then the figure spoke.

”Adrian.”

His name echoed across the world.

Adrian stepped forward.

”Who are you?”

The figure tilted its head.

”I don’t have a name.”

The Nameless stepped beside Adrian.

His expression changed.

”No.”

Everyone looked at him.

The Nameless stared at the figure.

”You’re not like me.”

The figure turned toward him.

”No.”

”Then what are you?”

The figure remained silent.

His brother stepped forward.

”You existed before Adrian?”

”Yes.”

”Before the First Choice?”

”Yes.”

”Before the Before?”

”Yes.”

Eve’s face became pale.

”That isn’t possible.”

The figure looked at her.

”You taught them to create.”

Eve slowly stepped backward.

”You...”

”I remember you.”

Eve’s expression changed completely.

”You were there.”

The figure nodded.

”Before the first lesson.”

Adrian looked between them.

”You knew each other?”

Eve didn’t answer.

The figure spoke instead.

”She found me.”

Eve finally whispered:

”I didn’t find you.”

”You did.”

”I found a place.”

The figure’s head turned slightly.

”And I was already there.”

Adrian’s father stepped forward.

”Enough.”

The figure turned toward him.

”You still pretend you understand.”

His father stopped.

Adrian looked at him.

”Dad?”

His father’s expression hardened.

”Don’t listen to it.”

The figure laughed.

A strange sound.

Not like laughter.

More like a broken recording of laughter.

”You call him father.”

Adrian nodded.

”He is.”

”Then he lied to you.”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

”What did he lie about?”

The figure raised one hand.

The world changed.

Adrian saw a place before the Beginning.

Before Choice.

Before possibility.

A vast empty space.

And in that emptiness stood his father.

Young.

Alone.

Waiting.

Then something appeared before him.

Not the shadow.

Not the First Choice.

Not Eve.

Something smaller.

A single point.

His father reached toward it.

The point disappeared.

His father tried again.

It returned.

He reached toward it again.

And again.

Finally, he stopped.

A voice came from the darkness.

”Don’t touch it.”

Adrian’s father turned.

The figure stood behind him.

”You’ll change it.”

His father asked:

”What is it?”

The figure answered:

”The first thing that refused to disappear.”

Adrian watched the memory.

”What was the point?”

The figure looked directly at him.

”You.”

Adrian froze.

His father turned toward the figure.

”That’s impossible.”

”You heard it.”

”What?”

”The question.”

His father looked at the tiny point.

”Is anyone there?”

The figure nodded.

”You answered.”

”Yes.”

”And that changed everything.”

His father looked at Adrian.

”I didn’t know.”

The figure spoke.

”You never understood what you were answering.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

His father had been there.

Before his mother.

Before Aeris.

Before Adrian.

He had answered the first question.

But the figure had been watching.

Waiting.

Adrian turned toward it.

”Why?”

The figure didn’t respond.

”Why were you watching me?”

Still nothing.

”Why did you let my father answer?”

The figure finally spoke.

”Because I wanted to know what would happen.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

”You experimented on me.”

”No.”

”You watched my entire life.”

”Yes.”

”You watched my mother erase children.”

”Yes.”

”You watched me suffer.”

”Yes.”

”You watched me become the Creator.”

”Yes.”

”You watched me reject it.”

”Yes.”

Adrian’s voice became colder.

”And you never interfered.”

”No.”

”Why?”

The figure took a step forward.

”Because I needed to know whether you would choose.”

Adrian stared at it.

”You could have stopped everything.”

”Yes.”

”You could have prevented the suffering.”

”Yes.”

”You could have saved the children.”

”Yes.”

”You could have stopped me from becoming a Creator.”

”Yes.”

Adrian’s fists clenched.

”Then why didn’t you?”

The figure answered:

”Because then your choices would not have been yours.”

Adrian stared at it.

The answer sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

The same principle his father had used.

The same principle the First Choice had used.

The same principle he had used with Aeron.

Freedom.

But something about this felt wrong.

Adrian looked at Eve.

”You taught them how to create.”

Eve nodded.

”But who taught you?”

Eve looked at the figure.

”I don’t know.”

The figure said:

”I did.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

”You taught Eve?”

”Yes.”

”Then you’re older than the Beginning.”

”Yes.”

”Older than the Before.”

”Yes.”

”Older than Choice.”

The figure nodded.

”Yes.”

Adrian took another step.

”Then what are you?”

The figure finally answered.

”I am not Origin.”

The ocean trembled.

”I am not Creator.”

The sky darkened.

”I am not Choice.”

The ground cracked.

”I am not a question.”

Adrian stared.

”Then what are you?”

The figure raised its head.

”I am the reason questions exist.”

Silence.

The words seemed to affect reality itself.

The Guardian stepped forward.

”That’s impossible.”

The figure looked at him.

”Everything you call impossible is simply something you haven’t chosen to understand.”

The Guardian frowned.

Adrian remembered something.

The First Choice had said Choice existed before existence.

The shadow had said the first question existed before Choice.

But now this thing was saying something existed before questions.

The hierarchy was collapsing.

Question.

Choice.

Existence.

Possibility.

Origin.

Creator.

All of them had believed they were standing near the beginning.

They weren’t.

There was always something before.

Adrian looked at the figure.

”What is before a question?”

The figure answered:

”Need.”

Adrian went silent.

Need.

Not desire.

Not emotion.

Not choice.

Something more primitive.

The need for something to be different.

The need for an answer.

The need for another existence.

The need for meaning.

The figure continued.

”Before anything asked why, something needed there to be a why.”

Adrian’s mind raced.

”So you needed existence.”

”No.”

”Then what did you need?”

The figure looked at him.

”You.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

”Me?”

”I needed to know whether something could exist without needing me.”

The words sent a chill through him.

”You created me?”

”No.”

”Then what did you do?”

”I created the condition that allowed you to appear.”

Adrian’s father suddenly stepped forward.

”You promised you wouldn’t.”

The figure turned.

”I promised nothing.”

His father looked furious.

”You said you would leave him alone.”

”I did.”

”You watched.”

”I watched from outside.”

”You manipulated the conditions.”

”I allowed them.”

His father clenched his fists.

”That is manipulation.”

The figure looked at Adrian.

”Your father still doesn’t understand.”

Adrian looked at him.

”Understand what?”

The figure pointed toward Adrian’s chest.

”You think your story is about discovering who created you.”

Adrian remained silent.

”It isn’t.”

The figure stepped closer.

”Your story is about discovering whether you require a creator at all.”

The words struck him.

Adrian remembered everything.

The Creator.

The Origin.

The First Choice.

His mother.

His father.

Eve.

Every being he had encountered had been connected to creation.

Someone made someone.

Someone taught someone.

Someone chose someone.

But Adrian had spent his entire journey trying to find the first person who made him.

Maybe that person didn’t exist.

Maybe the question itself was wrong.

His father looked at him.

”Adrian.”

Adrian turned.

His father looked tired.

”I should have told you.”

”What?”

”The truth.”

”What truth?”

His father stared at the figure.

”You weren’t created.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

His mother whispered:

”We thought you were.”

The old man spoke from behind them.

”We all did.”

Eve lowered her head.

”We misunderstood what we found.”

Adrian looked at the figure.

”Then what am I?”

The figure answered.

”You are the first existence that became aware of itself without being given a purpose.”

Adrian’s breathing stopped.

No purpose.

No command.

No Creator.

No destiny.

Nothing telling him what to become.

He simply became.

The figure continued.

”Your first act wasn’t creation.”

”It wasn’t choice.”

”It wasn’t desire.”

”It wasn’t even thought.”

Adrian waited.

”What was it?”

The figure pointed toward him.

”You refused to disappear.”

The ocean began rising behind the figure.

Every drop of water reflected a different Adrian.

A child.

Aeris.

The Creator.

The Nameless.

The human.

The seven versions.

Every possibility.

Every failure.

Every choice.

Then all of them disappeared.

Only Adrian remained.

The figure looked at him.

”That is your Origin.”

Adrian stared.

”So I don’t have a creator.”

”No.”

”I don’t have a predetermined purpose.”

”No.”

”I wasn’t chosen because of destiny.”

”No.”

”Then why did you need me?”

The figure smiled.

”For the same reason you once needed someone to answer.”

Adrian understood.

The figure had been alone.

It had needed something capable of answering.

And Adrian had become that answer.

Not because he was created for it.

Because he chose to become it.

Adrian slowly smiled.

”You needed me.”

”Yes.”

”Then you’re not my creator.”

”No.”

”You’re my first witness.”

The figure became still.

Adrian stepped closer.

”You were the first one to see me.”

The figure’s silence was enough.

Adrian smiled.

”And I was the first one to see you.”

For the first time...

the ancient being looked surprised.

The ocean stopped moving.

The cracks across its body began closing.

And something appeared where its face should have been.

Eyes.

Human eyes.

It looked at Adrian.

And whispered:

”I’ve been waiting for you to say that.”

A new message appeared.

Not from the System.

Not from the Story.

Not from the Origin.

Just words written across the sky.

ORIGIN IS NOT WHO CREATED YOU.

Then:

ORIGIN IS WHO WAS THERE WHEN YOU FIRST CHOSE TO EXIST.

Adrian looked at his father.

Then his mother.

Then the ancient being.

And finally at himself.

For the first time, he didn’t feel like a mystery that needed solving.

He felt complete.

Then the ancient being turned toward the sky.

Its expression suddenly changed.

Fear.

Adrian noticed.

”What is it?”

The being looked upward.

Something was appearing beyond the stars.

A massive crack.

Not in space.

In reality itself.

Something was opening from the other side.

The ancient being whispered:

”No.”

Adrian looked up.

”What?”

The being stepped backward.

”I thought you were the end of the story.”

The crack widened.

A voice came from beyond it.

A voice Adrian had never heard.

Yet somehow...

he remembered it.

The ancient being looked at Adrian.

”I was wrong.”

The crack opened completely.

And something on the other side whispered:

”Adrian.”

His father moved in front of him.

His mother summoned power.

The Guardian raised his weapon.

Aeron roared.

The forgotten children gathered together.

Everyone prepared.

Adrian simply stared.

Because the voice spoke again.

”You finally remembered your origin.”

A pause.

”Now remember mine.”

The darkness beyond the crack opened its eyes.

And Adrian realized something terrifying.

Whatever was coming...

wasn’t older than him.

It wasn’t younger.

It wasn’t his creator.

It wasn’t his enemy.

It was something that had existed alongside him.

Something that had been there from the very beginning.

Something that had been waiting for Adrian to remember it.

And then the voice whispered:

”Brother.”
