My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers

Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Could It Be Random Killings?

Captain Wright, who had been feeling a little drowsy, was suddenly wide awake. ’What the hell?!’

Another one had happened!

”Chief, say that again.” Captain Wright wiped a hand over his face, his expression turning exceptionally grim.

’How long has it been? And now there’s another one!’

”In Nigor, behind Quillan. Last night, a young couple was killed. This morning, their next-door neighbor woke up and saw the two of them displayed on the windowsill.

The team we sent over has already reported back. The scene is identical to the Lee family’s yesterday, except none of the furniture was damaged.

They even forcibly removed the baby from the pregnant woman’s womb and placed it right in the middle of the dining table.” The Chief’s voice was filled with fury. ’This is pure sadism!’

This time, there was no Beau in Nigor to witness the killer leaving. Plus, each house was a detached building, and with no furniture being smashed, none of the neighbors noticed a thing.

Captain Wright rubbed the bridge of his nose. ”Are there any security cameras over there? Here in Quillan, only a few houses had exterior cameras, but they didn’t capture the killer. What about Nigor?”

”It’s a similar situation. I’ve already requested assistance from our superiors. They said they’re sending people down to help.

You should get some sleep first. When you wake up, organize the files from the past two days. They should arrive around noon. I’ve already arranged for someone to pick them up.” The Chief knew Captain Wright hadn’t slept all night. He cared for his own men, and he made sure to add this last instruction before hanging up.

Captain Wright looked at the files in front of him. ’Forget it. I’ll organize this stuff first and think about resting later.’

’The sooner we solve this, the sooner we can give the victims justice.’ ℯℯ𝘭.

Meanwhile, Zoe Sawyer and her team were on a high-speed train, each holding and reading through case files.

”Do you know why we’re being sent for this cross-province support mission?” Heath Hale put down his file and asked Zoe Sawyer.

Zoe Sawyer shook her head. She had been in class as usual just yesterday. This morning, before her alarm even went off, Sean Hughes had dragged her out of bed. He said there was an urgent and important mission for them, and if she was really tired, she could sleep on the plane.

As soon as they got off the plane, they jumped into a car that had been waiting for them and rushed to catch the earliest high-speed train.

Zoe Sawyer had spent the entire car ride catching up on sleep, leaning on Sean Hughes’s shoulder. It wasn’t until she boarded the train that she finally received the file for this emergency mission.

She hadn’t even finished reading it when she heard Heath Hale’s question.

”After these last two cases, the Chief, Elder Crowe from the provincial department, and some other leaders feel your ability shouldn’t be kept under wraps. The more it’s used, the more of its potential can be discovered and utilized to its fullest. But that also means more people will find out about it.

So, this case is to determine your security level.” Heath Hale pointed at Zoe Sawyer, then at the file in her hands.

To put it bluntly, by revealing her abilities, Zoe Sawyer had become a piece in someone else’s game. The Chief, being on her side, naturally had to fight for more benefits for her.

This way, if anything happened, there would be people ready to protect her, maximizing her safety.

Elder Crowe was the one who, after learning about this case, immediately discussed it with the Chief and fought to get them assigned to it.

Once they arrive, they are to cooperate with their local colleagues and solve this case as quickly as possible to prevent any more tragedies.

”Huh? Me?” Zoe Sawyer pointed at herself, looking confused.

’I usually just stay at the station. If something special really did happen, Heath Hale and the others could provide support immediately. It shouldn’t require an official security detail, should it?’

Zoe Sawyer couldn’t quite wrap her head around it. ’I need bodyguards now?’

”Don’t underestimate yourself. Your ability is very precious.” Heath Hale reached out, took Zoe Sawyer’s hand, and shook his head slightly. At the same time, he glanced to the side and tapped her on the back of the hand.

’Someone is eavesdropping on us!’

Zoe Sawyer instantly understood the message Heath Hale was conveying, and a flash of realization crossed her eyes.

Zoe Sawyer lowered her head and went back to reading the file.

Evan Keller, sitting on the aisle, crossed his arms and sat up a little straighter, blocking the view from other passengers in the adjacent seats.

The high-speed train was fast. Two hours later, they were in a car heading to Quillan.

The driver who picked them up was the same young officer who had taken the statement from Beau’s family yesterday.

Along the way, Sean Hughes and the young officer went back and forth with questions and answers, getting a solid grasp of the situation at the scene.

Soon, the car pulled up in front of the Lee Family’s house. Captain Wright was already waiting there.

They were originally supposed to meet at the station, but both sides felt that would be a waste of time and agreed to meet directly at the crime scene.

”Thank you all for coming all this way. Here are the files on what we’ve found. Please take a look.” Although Captain Wright didn’t understand why they subconsciously formed a protective circle around one person as soon as they got out of the car, it didn’t stop him from handing the files over.

’She seems to be the center of their group. Giving it to her must be the right move.’

Zoe Sawyer and her three colleagues divided the files and quickly began to review them.

”Captain Wright, in the section on social relationships, why is there a question mark next to the male homeowner’s entry?” Evan Keller was the first to spot the discrepancy and pointed it out.

”Right, about that. According to the deceased, Henry Lane’s, colleagues, he was a decent person, but he could be rather harsh with his words at work. He often pointed out people’s flaws without any regard for their feelings, embarrassing them in front of superiors, colleagues, and even clients.

But then, afterward, he would always apologize and treat them to a meal to make up for it.

When we were questioning them, many people expressed conflicting emotions. They said frankly that they hated his merciless criticism, but they also frequently received his help. Their feelings toward him were complicated, and they couldn’t find the right words to describe it to us, so I just put a question mark there for now.” Captain Wright had clearly looked into this specifically; despite the question mark, he could explain the situation in detail.

’Got it. The sharp-tongued colleague who ”means well”—embarrasses you first, then makes a point of apologizing later. Yeah, that kind of person is hard to judge.’

”We’ve investigated the social circles of all four victims and found no one they were on bad terms with. At the same time, no one around them matches the killer’s profile.

The technicians also pulled the two adults’ internet records. So far, we haven’t found any online disputes or arguments with anyone, so we’ve ruled out revenge stemming from an online quarrel,” Captain Wright explained, pointing to another part of the file.

They weren’t on bad terms with anyone, were known to be friendly, and had only just moved in.

It was truly difficult to imagine why the killer would have targeted them.

”Where’s the file on the second case?” Evan Keller asked, flipping through the papers and not seeing it.

”Could it be a random killing?” Zoe Sawyer’s voice rang out, perfectly in sync with Evan Keller’s.
