My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers

Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Beau’s Testimony

For the first time, he hated his own sharp eyesight, which he’d always been proud of. The distance wasn’t great, so he could clearly see the torn flesh and exposed bone beneath the four heads.

”What are you looking at?! Go call the police!”

When his mother saw her son hadn’t left and had even disobeyed her by looking back, she slapped him hard on the back.

”Okay, okay, I’m going now.” The man didn’t dare delay any longer. His limbs feeling weak, he ran inside and dialed the number for his local police precinct.

By the time the police arrived, a crowd had already gathered around the house where the murders took place.

Everyone’s face was a mixture of terror and curiosity.

They whispered amongst themselves from time to time.

”Who called it in? Please come over here.” The lead officer motioned for his colleagues to cordon off the scene while the others dispersed to take statements from the onlookers.

”Me, officer. I’m the one who called.” The man raised his hand and walked up to the policeman.

After asking for his name as part of the standard procedure, the officer asked Vincent Logan to recount what had happened.

Vincent Logan couldn’t help but shudder as he recalled the four heads he had first seen.

”This morning, I got up like usual, brushed my teeth, washed my face, and was getting ready for work when I heard my mom scream.

I thought she might have slipped and fallen on the wet ground from the rain, so I rushed out to see if she was badly hurt. I’d just reached her side, before I could even say anything, and my mom was pushing me, telling me to hurry back inside and call the police. She insisted over and over that I shouldn’t look back.

I have a bit of a rebellious streak, and my curiosity got the better of me. The more she told me not to, the more I had to look back. That’s when I saw... that scene. And then I called the police, and you guys came.” Recalling that one glance, Vincent Logan clutched his chest in terror.

’I’ll probably see their terrified faces every time I close my eyes for the next few days.’

”Did you hear any unusual sounds last night?” the officer asked, jotting something down in his notebook.

’With a method this brutal, the family must have made a huge commotion while being attacked. Could it be that no one around here heard a thing?’

Vincent Logan thought for a moment, then shook his head. ”It was raining really hard last night. I found it too noisy, so I put on headphones and was on a call with my girlfriend while we fell asleep. I didn’t hear a thing.”

He had good hearing and could sometimes pick out unusual sounds even through the rain.

But last night, with the thunder and rain, he and his girlfriend had impulsively decided to wear headphones, wanting to fall asleep listening to each other’s breathing.

And so, they had missed the entire massacre.

Still, Vincent Logan was secretly glad he hadn’t heard anything. After all, if he had, he probably would have gone over to check, and there might have been one more body lying dead at the hands of the killer.

It was a terrible thought, but Vincent Logan felt he had to prioritize the safety of himself and his parents.

The officer detected the relief in Vincent Logan’s voice and understood his reasoning.

In a situation like this, ensuring one’s own family’s safety was always the priority.

”If you ever hear something like this again, remember not to rush over. The first thing you do is get away, then call the police and leave it to the professionals,” the officer said, closing his notebook.

He didn’t deny that the kindness of passersby had saved some victims.

But most of the time, a lone bystander was no match for a killer with a weapon, especially one in a murderous frenzy.

The correct course of action was to hide, avoid being discovered, and then call the police.

Once he was sure Vincent Logan had taken his words to heart, the officer patted him on the shoulder and told him to go comfort his mother. As the first witness, she must have suffered the greatest shock.

He also reminded him that it would be best not to leave the house for the next couple of days, as the police might need to come back for more questions.

Vincent Logan nodded to show he understood.

Even if the officer hadn’t said anything, he had already planned to take a few days off to stay with his mother.

Just as Vincent Logan left, a young officer who had been waiting nearby came over, holding the statements he’d collected.

”Cap Wright, I’ve questioned all the neighbors. They all said it was thundering and raining heavily last night, and they didn’t hear anything out of the ordinary,” the young officer reported, looking at his notes.

He then flipped to the last page, his tone hesitant. ”Finally, there was a nineteen-year-old girl, with the mental age of a four or five-year-old... she said she saw a tall man come out of the Lee family’s house last night.”

’A patient with developmental disabilities... can this testimony be trusted?’

The young officer was conflicted, but in the end, he reported it faithfully.

Cap Wright’s head snapped up, and he looked at the young officer. ”Where is this girl? Take me to see her.”

’A mental age of four or five? That’s basically a child.’

Captain Wright didn’t have high hopes, but he decided to go and see for himself anyway.

’He couldn’t let a single clue slip by!’

Soon, Captain Wright followed the young officer into the Logan family’s yard.

Two elderly people were sitting in the yard, protectively flanking the witness the young officer had mentioned.

The girl’s clothes were a bit old, but it was clear her grandmother kept her neat and tidy. Her hair was braided into two pigtails that rested on her chest.

When she saw the young officer approaching with someone else, she shrank back into her grandmother’s arms in fear.

”Beau, can you repeat what you told me earlier for this officer here?” The young officer crouched down to be at eye level with Beau.

Soothed by her grandmother’s gentle hand, Beau peeked out and looked at Captain Wright, who stood before her. She spoke cautiously, ”Last night, I waited until Grandma was asleep and was about to go upstairs to watch TV.

Just as I was about to turn on the light, I saw a very tall man come out of Uncle Lee’s house, get in a car, and drive away.”

Surprisingly, Beau’s statement was simple, concise, and logical. She didn’t sound at all like a four or five-year-old child.

Perhaps noticing Captain Wright’s skeptical gaze, Beau’s grandfather explained, ”We’ve always deliberately worked with Beau on her speaking. After all, her grandmother and I won’t be around to accompany her forever. If we were to pass away and she couldn’t clearly express herself, she would go hungry.

You can rest assured. Beau is a good girl and doesn’t lie. If she says she saw it, she saw it.”

It was precisely for this reason that the two of them had constantly trained Beau to clearly articulate what she needed or what she had seen.

Captain Wright nodded in understanding. Parents’ love for their children makes them plan far into the future.

The same was true for grandparents.

Since that was the case, Beau’s testimony was now much more credible.

Captain Wright stroked his chin, thinking.

Perhaps sensing Captain Wright’s lingering disbelief, Beau looked up, her tone full of defiance.

”I can draw it for you!”
