Our Anniversary, You Chose Her – I Chose Divorce

The situation turned in an instant.

Walker, who had been walking toward them, froze. With lightning speed, he raised his handgun and aimed it at the man holding Chloe.

But the man was faster. He dodged behind Chloe, using her as a human shield.

”Miss Chloe!”

Daniel Hayes’s eyes widened in fury at the sight!

The other bodyguards, equally shocked and grim, raised their guns and took aim.

The dust swirling through the air began to settle, and the sound of a babbling river could be heard nearby.

Chloe’s heart nearly stopped.

She felt the brutal strength of the large hand on her neck, as if it could snap her bones at any moment.

The muzzle of the gun pressed against her temple was still warm. If he pulled the trigger, she would die instantly.

All the noise seemed to be fading away.

An eerie silence fell over the jungle.

She slowly closed her eyes. ’So, it’s finally come to this?’

’Am I... going to die here?’

She opened her eyes again and saw Walker staring intently in her direction.

His face was unusually pale, and his narrow, elegant eyes were glacial as he stared at them.

”Let her go. I’ll agree to anything you want.”

He spoke in a cold voice, immediately humbling himself for the sake of negotiation.

Chloe was in the man’s hands. As long as he was willing to make a deal, there was a way out of this.

The only fear was that he wanted nothing at all.

At that moment, Chloe’s eyes suddenly stung with unshed tears. Her mind drifted back through the years, to the time they had spent together.

Back in college, their love was new and innocent. She’d been overjoyed when he accepted her confession, and then shocked when he’d abruptly declared he wanted to be with her forever.

She’d been so surprised at the time, her face flushing crimson. She’d even wondered if he was being a little reckless.

’Promising forever right from the start?’

She still remembered the shy, tentative beginnings of their relationship, and their first kiss.

It was on a rainy day. They were leaving the library together. Other students were scrambling back to the dorms, but they were huddled under a single umbrella. Rain drummed against the canopy, creating a curtain that separated them from the rest of the world.

Looking at his handsome profile, she was suddenly overcome with the desire to kiss him.

And she had never been one to shy away from what she wanted.

So she leaned in and kissed him.

It was just a peck on the cheek.

The boy walking beside her, his arm around her shoulders, stopped dead in his tracks.

He looked down at her and raised an eyebrow. ”Did you just steal a kiss?”

Chloe blushed, her bright eyes twinkling. ”No, you’re imagining things.”

He laughed, then leaned in and kissed her back. One kiss wasn’t enough, so he gave her another.

”Alright, then. Must be my imagination. But I really do want to kiss you.”

Her face had turned impossibly red.

”...”

The scene before her blurred.

’The past was so beautiful, and our relationship just kept getting better. When did it all start to change?’

’Why is it that whenever I think about the past, whether the memories are happy or sad, I’m filled with such heartache?’

Perhaps she had never truly moved on.

She could never get over it. ’How could someone who loved me so much turn his attention to another woman?’

And it was a woman she had always despised.

He had always known that, yet he still did it.

She could never let it go.

She heard her own voice ring out. ”Was it Vera Holloway?”

The large hand on her neck paused for a fraction of a second, then a soft chuckle came from behind her. ”You certainly know a lot, don’t you?”
