Our Anniversary, You Chose Her – I Chose Divorce

Chloe Reed’s expression was placid as she said, ”You just need to stay with your uncle.”

”But...” Hesitation clouded Noah’s small face. ”I’m still just a kid. I can’t stay with my uncle all the time. You’re his wife, so you’re supposed to stay with him.”

The little boy spoke with increasing fluency, his thoughts growing more agile. He was too clever for a child not yet four.

Chloe Reed’s lips curved into a smile. ”Noah, not everyone can stay with someone else forever. People are individuals, and we all have to accept being on our own sometimes.”

A look of confusion appeared on Noah’s face, and he simply blinked his big eyes at her.

”Alright, you don’t understand these things yet, but you will when you’re older.” Chloe Reed gave a small smile, exchanged a few more pleasantries, and then hung up the phone.

Chloe Reed glanced outside. When she had first arrived, she had been filled with a certain sense of anticipation. But now, for some reason, the image of Walker Grant’s pale, sickly face kept flashing through her mind.

’He was fine yesterday.’

’How could he get so sick just from being out in the wind?’

KNOCK, KNOCK!

Just as her thoughts were running wild, there was a knock on the door.

She asked, puzzled, ”Who is it?”

”It’s me, Miss Chloe.”

Daniel Hayes’s voice came from the doorway.

Only then did Chloe Reed relax and open the door. Seeing him, she asked in confusion, ”Is there something you need?”

Daniel Hayes pointed to the room next door and said, ”Mr. Grant is looking for you. He has something to tell you.”

”Okay.”

Chloe Reed nodded and started toward the room next door. But before she reached the door, she turned back to Daniel Hayes and asked, ”When did you two get so friendly?”

Daniel Hayes froze, instinctively scratching the back of his head. ”Well...”

Chloe Reed’s eyes were clear and calm. Seeing his hesitation, she immediately curled her lips into a smirk. ”I thought my grandmother sent you to protect me. It turns out you’re spying on me for Walker Grant.”

Hearing this, Daniel Hayes panicked and quickly waved his hands. ”No, Miss Chloe, it’s not what you think! Please, let me explain...”

”There’s no need to explain.” Chloe Reed cut him off coldly. ”Even the smallest betrayal is still a betrayal. No matter what your reasons were, you betrayed me. No amount of explaining will change that.”

Daniel Hayes’s expression fell instantly. ”Miss Chloe, I really had my reasons.”

But Chloe Reed didn’t want to hear any more. She pushed open the door to Walker Grant’s room.

”COUGH, COUGH...”

As soon as the door opened, the sound of a man coughing drifted out. He was wearing a jacket, and when he saw her, he said, ”Pack your things. We’re leaving in ten minutes.”

Chloe Reed nodded. ”Okay.”

’He’s decided we should leave, so he must have found something out. It must not be safe to stay here.’

Chloe Reed turned and went back to her own room, where she saw Daniel Hayes still standing there with a look of utter misery. When he saw her, he looked like he was about to speak.

”Let’s talk about this later,” Chloe Reed said, looking at him. ”Whatever deal you made with Walker Grant, you were at least protecting me, right?”

”Yes. I have always been protecting you.” Daniel Hayes’s answer this time was crisp and clear.

”Good. That’s enough, then.” Chloe Reed nodded, went back into her room, and packed her things.

She packed just a small bag, then immediately went to Walker Grant’s room again. He was still coughing, his face pale.

She looked at his face and hesitated for a long moment.
