Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Guodong nodded, getting married when the time is right is a normal thing.

”Xue, how many more years until we can get married?” He sighed; he’s only seventeen now.

Li Xue blushed and glared at Guodong, suddenly a thought came to mind. ”Guodong, do you think you might suddenly go back with Jing Chu?”

”You can go back with me then.”

”But what if we haven’t gotten married by then?”

”What’s the big deal? We’re still together, we can get married when we’re of age, right?”

Guodong comforted his fiancée, and Tao Yanzhen watched them from afar, feeling calm inside.

She was forcing herself to face reality, watching them being loving every day and telling herself it’s not hers.

It was really effective, she doesn’t feel as distressed as before. Seeing them being loving is just like watching ordinary people.

Today, Li Cunshan brought several older people to the watermelon field to see if they were ripe enough to sell quickly, otherwise they couldn’t go out for several days if it rains.

”Cun Shan, these watermelons are ready to be picked, we can gather enough for a truckload.”

”Alright, let’s start picking today and sell them tomorrow.”

”Where’s Yun Gui?”

”He’s gone to Zheng Family Village. He should be back this afternoon.”

Li Cunshan called over a few young men to move the watermelons out, laying a straw mat at the edge of the field for them to be placed on, covered at night and loaded onto the truck early the next morning.

”Captain Uncle, let’s try some of these watermelons.”

”Hold on, you’ll get your share in due time.”

”It’ll surely be when these vines are pulled up, letting us eat the leftovers.”

”Just having some is good enough, hurry up and watch your footing.”

The group joked and laughed. Wei Kaiyun’s family’s watermelons were also being picked, but they were stored in the cellar, kept for the children to eat. There really wasn’t much fruit here, but the cellar could preserve them for two months without issue.

Shi Jing and Jianbin could also carry them out now.

Feifei brought Shi Xian to play at the edge of the field. She hadn’t intended to bring him, but the little rascal knew they were going out and clung to her.

Seeing her brother itching to pick a melon, she quickly pulled him up; she really couldn’t take her eyes off him for a moment.

The small cart could only carry two baskets, once full, Old Yang pushed it back.

The second cart was Wei Kaiyun’s responsibility to push back. Shang Zhenkun was in charge of picking the watermelons.

Li Yungui and his wife arrived at Zheng Family Village to inquire about the whereabouts of Zheng Jixian.

”Our village head is in the field, right over there.” A child directed Li Yungui.

The couple rode their bike towards the indicated direction to find him.

Li Yungui saw Zheng Jixian tilling the field from a distance; it’s rare to see a village head working like this.

”Old Zheng, Zheng Jixian.” Li Yungui shouted from the edge of the field.

Zheng Jixian heard someone calling him and turned to see Li Yungui.

He quickly tossed aside the hoe and walked over briskly.

”Old Li, this is your wife, isn’t it? Let’s head home.”

Li Yungui nodded with a smile, though inwardly he knew this wasn’t likely to pan out, judging by Zheng Jixian’s somewhat embarrassed expression.

They talked about the crops in the field along the way, until they went inside the house where Zheng Jixian poured them water.

”Old Li, I’m really sorry, I just couldn’t bring myself to come find you.”

”It’s nothing, I was thinking you wouldn’t let this drag on for so long.”

”The family’s unlucky, that girl fell for a rural educated youth.”

”Don’t worry about it, don’t think too much, it’s just that the two kids weren’t destined.”

”Even if he’s decent, I wouldn’t be so upset; it’s just that she likes him because he’s handsome. What spell has this girl fallen under?

I told her about Manjiang’s conditions, only for her to hesitantly confess that they’re dating.

I got so mad I wrote to her mother, but haven’t received a reply yet.”

”Old Zheng, don’t overthink it, it really is just that the two kids weren’t meant to be.”

”Really frustrating, that educated youth doesn’t seem like a good guy; I hate how he always recites poetry, can that fill one’s stomach?

That naïve girl just wouldn’t listen. I kept wanting to let you know, but really felt embarrassed.”

”It’s okay, it’s okay. Kids grow up and have their own ideas. As an uncle, don’t meddle too much.

You see, I’ve brought you watermelons.”

Li Yungui promptly changed the topic.

He understood that no one was to blame, Zheng Jixian had good intentions, but simply hadn’t asked the kids upfront, and honestly, it’s no big deal.

Qu Xiaoli also tried to comfort Zheng Jixian, saying that fate is the most important thing in marriage; maybe the eldest son’s fate hasn’t arrived yet.

The couple stayed for a while, rejecting Zheng Jixian’s offer to have a meal.

”We have quite a few children waiting for meals at home. Next time if there’s a chance.”

Zheng Jixian felt even more embarrassed, regretting he hadn’t told Li Yungui sooner.

He finally sent the couple off. They ran into Yue Lanfeng.

”Second Uncle.”

”Hmm, why are you here at this hour? Shouldn’t you be at work?”

”I took a day off today.”

Li Yungui and Zheng Jixian nodded and the couple rode off.

”Lanfeng, what should I say to you? You’ve seen old Li just now. If things worked out, you’d be living a good life. They’re sensible folks, their eldest even serves in the army, isn’t that a good condition?”

Yue Lanfeng lowered her head, letting Zheng Jixian speak without rebuttal.

Looking at her like this, Zheng Jixian really felt frustrated. She seemed so good in the past, but now it’s clear she’ll be a worry in the future.

”Alright, I’m heading to work.” If she was his daughter, he’d scold and beat her, but she was his niece, he couldn’t say or hit her, let her mother worry instead. He can’t manage it.

Yue Lanfeng watched her second uncle leave, lowering her head. She just likes refined men, growing up in the army, she’d rather go to the countryside than stay there. How could she end up with someone serving in the army, even if she’s excellent, she wouldn’t agree.

”Spouse, why is our son’s marriage fate so tough?”

”The timing isn’t right yet.”

”But I’m worried, where on earth is my son’s fate? He’s not around here, if someone could be there to take care of him, wouldn’t that be great?”

”Your son’s rank doesn’t allow bringing family along.”

”See his third uncle, their family lives abroad and it’s fine isn’t it?”

”What’s good about it? That’s like rootless duckweed.”

”Stop talking nonsense. Third is really busy.”

”Hmph, I know him too well; he’s been distant from family since young, not sure why, look, no news for two years.

It’s like he doesn’t want this family.”

”Nonsense, having one’s spouse and kids around means having a family.”
