Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 824: Chapter 824: Going Up the Mountain

Jiang Xinyu finally bit her lip, her greed overcoming her fear. She saw weapons beside the skeletons, all cold weapons, no telling how long they’d been there, but they still looked quite sharp. So she gathered them up.

She walked carefully, trying not to touch the skeletons, and went around the pile of boxes, discovering gold bars and silver coins, indicating these were probably from the Republic era, several decades old.

Jiang Xinyu looked around and found no signs of danger, so she collected all eighteen large boxes. Only she could gather them like this, given that the wooden boxes were decayed beyond touch.

After collecting the boxes, Jiang Xinyu felt her heart pounding; it was terrifying, and she’d better leave quickly.

Through the cave passage, she sprinted all the way and when she emerged, it was already past four, even later than yesterday, so she hurried to return.

Her heart was both excited and still fearful. But now all these treasures were hers, since she’d collected them.

No one saw Jiang Xinyu’s expression right now. Otherwise, they’d surely be frightened, seeing the mix of fear and relief.

She jogged down the mountain, arriving half an hour later than yesterday, with a basket full of dates and a bag of sour dates picked today.

Sister-in-law Liu was still worried as ever, with both kids awake, she was on edge.

Hearing a knock on the door, she rushed out to open it.

”Xiao Jiang, I really can’t take you scaring me like this, you really shouldn’t go up the mountain again.”

Jiang Xinyu nodded, ”Okay, I won’t go up the mountain again.”

Hearing this promise, Sister-in-law Liu finally felt relieved.

After dinner, the two of them sat on the kang with the kids.

”Xiao Jiang, I’m going home tomorrow to bring my mother-in-law some money, I’ll be back the day after tomorrow afternoon.”

”Alright, I picked some dates today, take some home with you.”

”No need, there are date trees in my mother-in-law’s yard.”

”We have some pastries at home, take them with you, you shouldn’t go back empty-handed.”

”No need, I’ll just buy a couple of snacks from the supply and marketing cooperative, it’s no big deal. There are too many people at my in-law’s place, I’ll just bring some food for my mother-in-law.”

Jiang Xinyu didn’t insist any further and let Sister-in-law Liu play with the kids while she went to bathe, feeling the need to wash away the filth. Wolves and human bones did that to her.

Shocked by today’s events, she had a nightmare in the middle of the night. After waking, she couldn’t recall the dream, but she couldn’t sleep anymore, lying awake until dawn.

The next morning after breakfast, Sister-in-law Liu went home.

Leaving Niang San by themselves at home, Jiang Xinyu waited until the children fell asleep before going to the empty side room and took out all the boxes.

With a crash, the wooden boxes fell apart. Everything inside mixed with the wood, covering the floor.

Seeing a floor covered with gold bars, Jiang Xinyu grinned widely.

She took out a roll of fabric from her space and cut it into squares, each package containing fifty gold bars, totaling one hundred packages. Wow, each bar weighed two taels, which meant a thousand jin. Can you imagine? A thousand jin of gold bars?

There were also so many silver coins on the ground. Earning even one ten-thousandth of this would be impossible in a lifetime. It’s true—people die for wealth, just as birds die for food; an eternal truth.

The silver coins were directly placed in burlap sacks because there was no place to store them. She had previously found a jar of silver coins at home and thought she was rich, but this didn’t compare to what she found here.

Before Jiang Xinyu could tidy up the silver coins, Shi Xian’s loud cries echoed, and she immediately took off her gloves, washed her hands, and went to attend to the little master.

Being alone at home, she didn’t feel like eating, with her mind preoccupied with the silver coins scattered on the floor. Once the children were asleep, Jiang Xinyu hurried back to the side room.

She filled five bags with silver coins and stored them in her space.

The last two small wooden boxes with locks were placed to the side.

She collected the decayed wood and burned it in the yard to avoid any awkward explanations.

Going inside and seeing the children still asleep, she boiled water and took a quick shower.

The wood in the yard was almost burned out when she heard a knock at the door.

”Teacher Jiang? Teacher Jiang?”

Jiang Xinyu responded, wrapped her hair with a towel, and opened the door. ”Village Chief Li.”

”I saw smoke from afar at your place, what’s going on?”

”It’s nothing, just burning some old things while cleaning the yard,”

”Oh, that’s all right then,” Li Yungui said and left.

Jiang Xinyu breathed a sigh of relief and went to the side room, took a cloth to wipe the two wooden boxes clean, and carried them inside the house.

The little ones were still asleep. Jiang Xinyu found pliers, and after much effort, managed to open the boxes.

Once again, Jiang Xinyu’s eyes were dazzled by the contents, filled with exquisite jewelry. None of them were gold or silver, but jade and gemstones.

She closed the box and stored it in her space. Opening the other one revealed something similar, with an additional stitched book inside.

Jiang Xinyu glanced at it and realized it wasn’t a book, but a diary.

It contained information about some high-profile individual who fled here, not knowing how it all ended up here, perhaps it was robbed?

After reading it, Jiang Xinyu stored the diary back in the box and into her space.

Lying beside her son, her face was full of smiles.

Forgive her peasant mentality; she’d never seen so many treasures.

The things in the Capital, even Wei Kaiyun’s belongings, couldn’t compare to this.

Now she realized she was hungry. She took out a serving of fish-flavored shredded pork rice from her space and ate contentedly.

At this moment, the two little ones woke up. After attending to their needs, she played with them, making sure they would sleep well at night.

Shi Xian was having a great time playing on the kang, rolling back and forth, while the little girl watched him, though her movements were not as agile as Shi Jing’s yet.

Night fell, and Shi Xian yawned, so she promptly fed them until they were full and tucked them in for the night.

Since the afternoon was spent only boiling water, the kang wasn’t warm enough, so she needed to light the fire, or else Niang San might feel cold in the middle of the night.

Merely boiling water felt wasteful, so she decided to steam some chestnuts. Once cooked, they’d be easier to peel, ready to be crushed into chestnut flour.

Hearing a knock on the door, after confirming it was Qu Xiaoli, she opened the door.

”Teacher Jiang, these are injured sweet potatoes everyone shared today; I brought some for you.”

”Thank you, sister-in-law. I’ve steamed some chestnuts; take some home with you.”

”No need, no need, my kids at home don’t have the patience to eat those. Teacher Jiang, I’m heading back.” Qu Xiaoli politely refused and promptly left.
