Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Li Yunqiang still has some self-awareness.

”Then remind Xiang Dong.” Liu Cuilan was anxious too. This opportunity for her son is really good now.

”I’ve already reminded him, but Xiang Dong’s personality is just like that. I hope Xiao Wei can see the good side of Xiang Dong.”

Liu Cuilan was a bit worried, and Li Yunqiang, seeing her like this, doesn’t have a way either. After talking it through, the couple harmonized again, which finally allowed her to calm down.

Liu Dazhi’s home in Liu Village was also not peaceful. All the village officials were at his house.

Liu Dazhi was utterly fed up, these people were truly indescribable.

”Da Zhi, if you give the money, our dividends at the end of the year will be less.”

Liu Dazhi sneered, ”I’m not as shameless as you guys. We’ll let this year pass, but next year, even if I’m worked to death, I won’t go looking for a seeding machine. You can figure it out yourselves. I know what you mean, either you don’t want to pay or some of you want to owe it.

Are you dreaming? When Li Yungui kicks up a fuss at the township, you’ll still have to give every cent and won’t be able to show your face.

I know how you’re thinking, you think Li Yunqiang is our Liu family’s son-in-law. It doesn’t matter if he can’t say anything now, even if he could, on what grounds would he let you owe anything?

Alright, go back. I’ll say it again, next year we’re not getting anything, we’ll just work it little by little ourselves. Isn’t Tangjiazhuang doing just fine without a seeding machine?”

Everyone felt very embarrassed by what Liu Dazhi said. But seeing him truly upset, no one said anything for a while.

”Go back, we still have work tomorrow. If we don’t turn in the public grain, we won’t have a single idle day. You may not be tired, but I am.”

They all felt ashamed, Liu Dazhi lay on his kang, still sulking inwardly.

”Dear, now that the matter’s over, it doesn’t count. You know what kind of people they are, our own health is most important.”

Liu Dazhi didn’t respond. He was deeply unhappy.

”Dear, go to sleep, we’ve still got busy days ahead.”

”I’ve truly had enough of being the village head. But thinking that if I quit, considering those few families, we won’t have a decent life in the future.”

”Dear, if you don’t want to do it, then don’t, it’s no big deal.”

”Go to sleep. I understand.”

The next day, Li Yungui and his brother’s households were quiet; even eating was done carefully, afraid of making noise and waking the three children.

After breakfast, they all went out. Today, the task was to cut sweet potato vines in the fields, feed for village cattle and horses, so half of the people were doing this work.

Wei Kaiyun also came out to work. Older people have tricks for working; more than ten formed a line, scythes in hand, walking backward, rolling sweet potato vines into a big bundle, cutting the parts connected to the sweet potatoes with the scythe.

Wei Kaiyun drove a tractor to transport sweet potato vines, directly hauling them to the livestock shed where they were laid out to dry.

Waiting here to unload the cart were all women; they often privately talked about Wei Kaiyun, and with his looks, aura, and capabilities, no woman, even if not in love, could resist stealing more glances.

Handling things here was Li Yungui’s wife, Qu Xiaoli. Seeing these women gossip, she didn’t take it to heart.

But when Wei Kaiyun approached, this group of women became timid, working earnestly without the idle gossip.

Once Wei Kaiyun drove the tractor away, the women began gossiping again.

Qu Xiaoli found them rather amusing, but it’s good this way. If someone made advances, it would be troublesome, and unpleasant outcomes wouldn’t be ideal.

”Why doesn’t someone as capable as Master Wei, even after being exonerated, leave?” Woman A gossiped.

”Who knows? Could it be their family truly wants to stay in our village?” Woman B chimed in.

”I returned to my mother’s home yesterday; my niece came back from school, scared like a little chick, said the city is too chaotic.

Master Wei’s family might be staying because they’re afraid of the chaos outside?”

”Actually, thinking that Master Wei’s family not leaving is a good thing, when I took my kids back to my mother’s house. My kid Zhuzi recited more ancient poems than my nephew in fifth grade, plus the Red Book is just as memorized.”

Now, more than ten women praised their kids.

”Once we finish the fieldwork, let’s gather firewood. This year Teacher Jiang will surely teach the kids again. We’ll get the men to fix up the room, while we handle the firewood so the kids won’t be cold during classes.”

”Definitely, definitely, every household must contribute some firewood.”

The village had about two hundred acres of sweet potatoes, spread out plot by plot, since sweet potatoes aren’t picky about terrain, they were planted in various nooks and crannies.

Li Yungui was busy working when Wang Shulin came over. He drove a horse cart, faster than an ox cart. Wang Shulin was anxious, and quickly turned in the public grain to avoid being criticized at a meeting.

Unlike those who got criticized annually without concern, with their thick skin, he couldn’t accept it; he still had dignity.

”Are you guys starting on sweet potatoes?”

Li Yungui wiped the sweat from his forehead, ”Yes, once harvested, we’ll quickly get them into the cellar for peace of mind. Does your village have many sweet potatoes, are they finished harvesting?”

Wang Shulin shook his head, ”Not yet, most people are husking corn now, other grains are ready, only waiting on corn. I came to get the corn husker machine.”

”Come on, I’ll take you there. I can give you an extra machine.”

”Really?”

”Yes, I could even give you more, but I worry about other villages dropping by, causing trouble.”

”Old Li, that won’t do. I brought money for ten machines, so give me ten. What’s our relationship? We’ve never quarreled over the years, now you have this capability, you must pull me along.”

”What do you need so many for?”

”It’s not too much at all. Let me tell you, these corn husker machines are great stuff, they won’t spoil easily and can still be used later.

Old Li, give me ten machines, they’re not coming today.”

Li Yungui felt ecstatic inside, yesterday alone he made ten machines, today he’s still producing.

But feigned a bit of difficulty, ”There are only ten machines in the warehouse.”

”Give them to me first, I’m reasonable, and I came first, all should follow a first-come-first-served rule, right?”

”Fine, stop talking, I’ll give them to you. If someone comes, we’ll give them ones we’ve used.”

Wang Shulin was pleased, ”Old Li, rest assured, I appreciate it.”

The two went straight to the team headquarters, Li Yungui pulled out the keys, and Wang Shulin, seeing the ten corn husker machines inside, grinned from ear to ear. Without waiting for Li Yungui’s words, he instructed the lads who came along to start loading onto the cart directly.
