Chapter 1015: Chapter 1015: Fighting over a House

Madam Liang let out a dry laugh and shook her head, “He doesn’t know.”

The old lady immediately grew displeased. “Well, borrowing so much money, and neither of you even discussed it as a couple? If you quarrel over this later, are you going to blame Yu for giving too much money?”

She waved her hand, preparing to send Madam Liang away.

Madam Liang knew the old lady well. One look at her expression and she understood what she was about to say, so she quickly explained before the old lady could speak.

“Mother, you can’t blame me. I was planning to discuss it with the child’s father, but the situation was urgent.”

“What’s so urgent? Did someone try to snatch the house from you?”

To everyone’s surprise, Madam Liang nodded forcefully and explained to Shu Yu, “Originally, the child’s father and I had our eyes on a small courtyard in our alley. Although the house isn’t big, it has four or five rooms, which are plenty for our family of four. The thing is, the seller’s asking price was high, so we thought we’d wait and see if we could bargain it down. But then…”

But then, not only did the seller refuse to lower the price, this morning, the house was sold just like that.

Madam Liang was filled with regret and rushed to the original homeowner to negotiate again, offering to add two taels of silver to the price to buy the house back.

The original homeowner was so exasperated that they laughed. Two taels of silver? How could she even think of saying that?

But Madam Liang’s knack for pestering people was truly aggravating. Coincidentally, the intermediary who had helped finalize the deal with the buyer was present. Seeing that Madam Liang wanted to buy a house, he said to her that he had another property in hand, an even better one. The catch: it was pricier. He asked Madam Liang if she wanted to take a look.

When Madam Liang heard it was more expensive, she hesitated.

The intermediary proposed taking her to see the house first. And sure enough, once Madam Liang saw it, she was reluctant to leave.

But pricey it truly was. She said she needed time to think. The intermediary, a seasoned negotiator, immediately warned her: the house was in high demand, and if she didn’t make a decision soon, someone else was likely to snatch it up.

Madam Liang saw several other families also looking at the house, and she became worried it might end up just like the previous courtyard, taken by someone else.

She asked the intermediary to wait while she discussed it with her husband.

After all, buying a house is no small matter; it’s certainly not something she could decide on her own. On this point, the intermediary was understanding but urged her to act quickly.

At this point, Madam Liang put on a bitter face. “I went straight to the peach forest to find the child’s father, but who could’ve known? Today, he went out of town with Boss Ji on some business and won’t be back until evening.”

Even if he came back, they’d still be short on money.

After thinking it over, Madam Liang decided to come to Shu Yu.

One reason was to borrow money; the other was to ask for her advice. As long as Yu approved, Lu Sanzhu would definitely not object.

She even painfully spent ten or twenty coins on a donkey cart just to get to Ningshui Street.

The old lady furrowed her brow slightly after hearing this. “Is that house really so good?”

“Mother, if we miss this chance, there won’t be another. I heard from the intermediary that the homeowner urgently needs money. If not, the price would’ve been even higher. Right now, it’s only two hundred and eighty taels—the lowest price already.”

At this, Lanhua gasped sharply. Two hundred and eighty taels—low?

Lanhua had never seen so much silver in her life; it was terrifying.

Madam Liang anxiously looked at Shu Yu. She had heard from her husband that Yu was very much in favor of buying a house, as she believed that before long, property prices in Jiangyuan County were certain to rise.

Sure enough, Shu Yu remained silent for a moment and then nodded. “Fine, I’ll go with Third Aunt to check it out.”
