She is the Side Character! — Watch Her Change her fate!

Chapter 238: Chapter 238: Must You Marry Your Savior After Being Rescued from the Water? (Part 9)

Shi Wen wasn’t interested in continuing the conversation with Lin Chen, who had no filter in her speech, fearing she’d say something inappropriate. Although her reputation might not matter to Lin Chen, it mattered to her.

Even if she doesn’t marry Ying Xiucai, she still wants a good marriage.

Returning home, the house was temporarily empty; her father was out selling goods, her younger brother was at school, and her mother was helping someone with laundry. As she entered the room, someone suddenly grabbed her by the neck.

A voice sounded by her ear: ”Young lady, don’t scream; I need some healing medicine. After surviving this ordeal today, I will surely repay you greatly in the future.”

The voice sounded weak, but Shi Wen couldn’t resist at all, feeling utterly panicked inside.

After a moment, realizing the person had no intention of killing her, she took a deep breath and nodded gently. Her neck was released, and she gasped for air, coughed twice, then asked, ”Who are you? How can I help you?”

The person was very formidable; if she had any other thoughts or tried to scream, she would likely lose her life.

Why not take a gamble?

He seemed capable. If she helped him today, perhaps he might help her in the future.

As for whether he was good or bad, as long as he wasn’t bad towards her, it didn’t really matter.

This afternoon, as Ah Chen prepared to practice martial arts, she clearly felt a distinct gaze from the neighboring Shi Family. Ah Chen knew everyone in the Shi Family, and this gaze didn’t belong to any of them; it was a stranger. At the very least, she hadn’t seen them before, and searching through the commissioner’s memories found nothing; she sensed none of these hidden gazes.

Ah Chen didn’t pause, wondering who the person was. Could they be related to Shi Wen?

Nothing was available in the commissioner’s memory; at this time the person probably was lost waiting to marry into the Qin Family.

However, today’s martial practice wasn’t in front of Lin Daming; she was trying to exhibit something, clumsily chopping with a knife.

Soon after, the gaze was gone, probably deeming it unnecessary to observe her anymore.

Lin Daming returned to see Ah Chen sitting and resting: ”Chenchen, are you slacking off?”

”Dad, I’m tired.”

Lin Daming’s face filled with heartache, quickly saying, ”If you’re tired, we won’t practice.” Completely forgetting the importance of thoroughly teaching his daughter martial arts, only worried about her getting exhausted.

But soon he remembered previous matters, then said, ”We’ll practice again tomorrow. Okay?”

Practice is necessary, but resting for a day is fine.

Ah Chen nodded: ”Okay.”

Lin Daming sighed with relief, fearing his daughter might quit. Practicing martial arts isn’t something you can breeze through; not practicing seriously is equivalent to not practicing at all. He hopes his daughter can gain some self-defense skills.

Not only martial arts, she must also learn to swim.

It’s not too hot now; maybe after a while.

There are plenty of rivers and lakes here, might be useful someday.

Ah Chen heard Lin Daming’s thoughts, and didn’t object, following this kind father. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be at ease anyway, and it isn’t a big deal.

Just when Lin Daming entered, she perceived the neighboring gaze to reappear.

Lin Daming seemed aware but didn’t investigate further, which partly explained not forcing Ah Chen to continue martial practice today, and choosing not to exhibit more.

Of course, he had no intention to explore, lest exposing his unusual characteristics?

Who knew the person spying was? Why would they be at Shi Family’s? Did Shi Family know about them? Curious, yet he refrained from checking.

Roughly five days passed, and the gaze from next door hadn’t appeared again.

During those five days, Shi Wen hadn’t sought her out either.

In the past, it was mostly the commissioner who visited Shi Wen to play; after all, Shi Wen had chores at home, unlike the commissioner who had a doting father.

On this morning, Ah Chen was at the pork stall.

Lin Daming wasn’t there; he had gone to collect pigs. Having his daughter at the stall certainly made things convenient; no need to close the stall.

Ah Chen routinely sold pork, exchanged greetings with customers, chatted with familiar people.

Suddenly, a special voice echoed by her ear.

[Host, just complete a check-in task. You’re already bound, and it’s not asking you to do anything else; just go check-in and receive rewards, it’s very worthwhile, isn’t it? It’s like a windfall from the sky!]

Is it a system?

Ah Chen searched within the crowd, hearing the system was bound to a host reluctant to do tasks? Even unwilling to do a check-in task? She wasn’t surprised; there are all kinds of people.

Just the system seemed rather foolish; how could it choose a host unwilling to do tasks? Was it forcibly bound? Possibly.

She had identified the target; not far ahead, a young gentleman walking a dog with a servant was stylishly dressed.

She recognized this man; he was Shen Xuan, the County Magistrate’s young son, a carefree playboy who didn’t do any harm, just liked to have fun.

The County Magistrate actually served justly, treated the local people well, never bullied the citizens. He promoted talented individuals, punished wrongdoers.

Simply unfortunate, during a night in the future, his whole family was killed at the County Government, only Shen Xuan who didn’t live at the County Government narrowly escaped, but later disappeared; the commissioner didn’t recall details.

Reportedly, that night the extermination of County Magistrate’s family was for revenge, because the Count Magistrate had led people to annihilate local bandits, yet some escaped.

Coming here, Ah Chen noticed this memory portion and intended to take action; this County Magistrate holds decent official conduct, deserved to survive. Since she encountered them, she might as well save his life, planning an ambush at night to capture those so-called bandits. After the tragic family’s death, Lanru County’s situation worsened thereafter, and Emperor’s fury slightly fell on this region.

If not for Ying Bairong later emerging, Lanru County might not have seen prosperous days.

[I’m too lazy to go; I’m already fine, don’t need those things. My dad is County Magistrate, I’m County Magistrate’s son, my grandfather’s family has wealth, gave me estates, annually gifting me Silver. I could relax my entire life, why toil?] Shen Xuan mentally retorted to the system, having adapted well to this world at birth.

Official father, business family, ambitious elder brother, simply born to live comfortably.

Given such circumstances, not relaxing? Foolish?

[Host, do you not miss things from your previous world?] System helplessly questioned.

Shen Xuan: [Like what?]

System: [Cell phones, computers, although unconnected to the internet, I can download various videos for you...]

Shen Xuan: [Stop talking! Mentioning those electronic items makes me dizzy now, don’t want them!]

System was stumped, how was there even such a host? Why had it bound such a host? People crossing to ancient times generally miss those electronic gadgets!

Shen Xuan sighed internally, genuinely dizzy, seeing those items made him nauseous, always felt endless client calls, endless revisions. Most hateful was achieving entrepreneurial success, becoming a business magnate, yet not relishing life before perishing.

This life he aimed to relax.

Even having a check-in system binding him, he’d rather not participate.

Who could say whether check-ins would lead to other tasks in the future?

Clearly able to relax, why exert oneself?

Ah Chen couldn’t help but chuckle, catching Shen Xuan’s attention.

He didn’t think someone mocked him, simply this laughter stood out on the bustling street. He looked up, noticing the girl smiling in front of a small pork stall.

He glanced down at his dog, leading the dog over.

”What would you like, sir?” Ah Chen asked, glancing at the large dog beside Shen Xuan, eyeing the pork before them.

Shen Xuan indicated a bone with his finger: ”Just this, for my lucky dog.”

As Ah Chen handed over the bone, Shen Xuan passed it to the dog.

[Congratulations, host, for successful first check-in at Lin Daming’s pork stall! Reward: Silver Coin 1 tael, soap-making recipe 1 sheet.] System’s voice was excited.

Shen Xuan: Damn.

He hastened: [Reclaim those petty rewards now!]

Hearing this, Ah Chen’s laughter deepened.
