Pregnant During An Apocalypse [BL]

Chapter 165: Chapter 165 - Sending in a rescue team

Hana’s frown deepened as she stared at him, searching his face for an answer. ”Yunfeng, what do you mean ancient times?” Her voice was quieter now, but it carried a weight that sent a chill down his spine.

Yunfeng swallowed hard. His mind raced.

How was he supposed to explain this? That the knowledge spilling from his mouth wasn’t entirely his own? That he had memories—fragments—of another time, another Yunfeng? That deep down, he wasn’t sure if he even was the same Yunfeng she had always known?

His thoughts spiraled. What If she asked what had happened to the Yunfeng of this world before he arrived? Did he die? Did he vanish? Was there ever a difference between them to begin with?

He had no answers.

And Hana wasn’t looking away. Her expression had shifted—still confused, but now tinged with worry.

He opened his mouth, scrambling for something, anything to say—

”Tsk.”

Jai’s voice cut through the tension like a knife.

”He’s talking about a novel he read,” Jai said lazily, stretching his arms above his head. ”I guess our situation is kind of similar to that, right?” He shot Yunfeng a look—quick, but sharp, a silent message hidden behind his nonchalance.

Yunfeng hesitated. Then, catching onto the lifeline, he forced out a chuckle. ”Y-Yeah. Exactly. It was this old novel I read a long time ago.”

Hana raised an eyebrow, skeptical. ”A novel?”

Jai nodded smoothly. ”Yep. About alphas and omegas fighting zombies. Super dramatic, very post-apocalyptic. He probably just got caught up in the moment.”

Yunfeng exhaled slowly, his shoulders relaxing.

Hana still didn’t look fully convinced, but she hummed thoughtfully. ”hoo... but why haven’ti read it.”

”because I loaned it to him,” jai supported him.

Hana finnaly let go of the matter with a roll of her eye.

The other school boy who remained silent till now moved forward. ”hey I’m Jiang, can you check me to.” He looked hopeful.

Yunfeng checked him and shook his head.

Jiang’s hopeful expression wavered as Yunfeng shook his head. The boy’s face went stiff, and his shoulders tensed as if bracing for disappointment.

”Oh...” Jiang murmured, his voice trailing off. He glanced down at his hands, clenching them into fists before forcing a weak smile. ”I guess that’s fine too...”

Yunfeng sighed internally, watching how the boy struggled to hide his emotions. He wanted to be stronger... he wanted to protect himself. And Yunfeng understood that. In a world that had changed so drastically, not having any mutation—any advantage—felt like a death sentence.

He turned his attention to Qiu Yue, the last one in the group. Taking a deep breath, Yunfeng leaned in and sniffed carefully. Then he frowned.

Nothing.

No pheromones. No scent. Nothing at all.

His mind raced. How is that even possible? Even Jiang, who hadn’t mutated, still had a natural human scent. But Qiu Yue? It was like smelling air.

The doctor adjusted his glasses, a small smirk tugging at his lips. ”What? Am I an omega too? That would be interesting...”

Yunfeng shook his head, his frown deepening. ”No... you haven’t mutated.”

Qiu Yue didn’t seem surprised. He simply hummed and leaned back, his expression neutral.

There were more pressing matters. He turned to Jai and gestured for him to call his family. ”Contact them now. Let them know where we are and ask for air support. Not by land. Got it?”

Jai visibly gulped. ”They’re gonna kill me...” he muttered, but he still pulled out his phone and dialed.

Just five minutes ago,

Shen Shinju rubbed his forehead, his fingers pressing against the bridge of his nose. The air in the meeting room was suffocatingly tense. Around the long, polished table, the highest-ranking officers sat in rigid silence, their expressions grim. No one spoke, no one moved. Even the usual chatter of lower-ranked soldiers outside the hall seemed distant—like the whole base had collectively held its breath.

The situation had spiraled out of control faster than any of them had anticipated.

Initially, this meeting had been called to discuss the infection spreading beyond civilian areas—something they had hoped to contain. But the latest reports were far worse than they had feared.

A few of their own soldiers—men trained to withstand the worst—had turned. And not just turned. They had bitten their own families before they were put down.

The aftermath had been catastrophic.

Families of the fallen refused to accept the truth. They accused the higher-ups of executing their loved ones too hastily. ”They weren’t even fully turned!” one grieving wife had screamed, trying to claw her way into the morgue. Rumors spread that the military was hiding something—that the infection wasn’t just spreading from the outside, but from within.

And now, the soldiers—who once stood obedient and disciplined—were growing restless. Some outright refused orders. Others murmured in hushed voices behind their commanders’ backs.

Insubordination.

That was the last thing they needed in the middle of an apocalypse.

Shen Shinju exhaled slowly, his temples throbbing.

The phone call came right then. It was his son. He connected the call instantly.

Yunfeng watched his best friend intently.

the other end of the line was silent for a long time.

Jai let out a nervous chuckle. ”Hi, Dad, ummm... I’m kinda in a sticky situation.”

A heavy sigh came through the speaker. Then a stern voice. ”Did you give trouble to Mrs. Lin?”

Jai froze. Shit. His father still thought he was at Yunfeng’s place. Well, that was believable—he had a habit of sleeping over there often.

He forced a dry laugh. ”Hahaha, Yunfeng was very funny—he thought an EMP attack was launched when he couldn’t switch my phone on properly.”

Yunfeng scowled and nudged him from the side. ”Give me the phone.”

Jai yelped and tried to pull away, but Yunfeng was faster, snatching the phone from his grasp.

”Mister Shao.”

The voice on the other end immediately softened. ”Yunfeng. Hope my son hasn’t been a trouble to your family.”

Yunfeng’s jaw tightened. ”Sir, we are in City A, inside an Amazon warehouse. Please send air support immediately. There are eight of us. By the time you get here, we might not have a live signal—the country is trying to contain the news. Please hurry. And do not, I repeat, do not send a land crew. They will be killed in minutes.”

The other end went deathly silent.

Then a sharp inhale. A deep, strained breath.

”...You both...” Shao’s father’s voice trembled with anger. ”Fuck. I’ll smack your butts when you come home.”

Jai winced.

Then the man’s tone hardened. ”Are you secure now? Are the doors locked?”

”yes sir,”

”Good stay in there and don’t move,”

____

Shen Shinju’s breath was shallow, his heart pounding so hard he could feel it in his throat. The moment he cut the call, his fingers twitched as if he had been burned. Jai is in City A. His mind refused to process it properly. It was a nightmare—no, worse than a nightmare. A nightmare, at least, ended when one woke up. This? This was real.

The room around him felt smaller, the walls pressing in, suffocating. The officers who had been frozen moments before were now shifting uneasily. They had never seen their captain lose composure—not like this.

Then, without hesitation, he barked, ”The chopper. Prepare the chopper! Team Alpha, gear up. We leave in ten minutes.”

No one questioned him. The urgency in his voice sent soldiers scrambling, boots pounding against the floor as the room burst into action.

But as Shinju turned, ready to storm out, a voice stopped him in his tracks.

”Son,” the deep voice of Shin Kailin, his father, rang through the room. The old man, despite his age, still held the commanding presence of a seasoned general. His piercing gaze settled on his son’s frantic movements. ”What happened? Why are you—”

”It’s Jai.” Shinju’s voice cracked slightly, and that alone was enough to silence the room again. He never sounded like this. He never let himself sound like this. ”He is in the city!!! Fuck!” His fist clenched. ”I’m taking the chopper.”

Shin Kailin’s frown deepened. His expression remained unreadable, but his fingers tapped against the table—a slow, steady rhythm that contrasted Shinju’s shaking hands.

”Calm down,” the old man said, voice firm but not unkind. ”If you leave right now, the unrest in the base will become uncontrollable. Do you understand that?”

Shinju barely heard him. His feet were already angled toward the door, his body ready to sprint to the hangar. ”Father, he’s my son—”

”And you are a commander.” The words were like steel, slicing through his panic. ”You have a duty to fulfill, Shinju.”

Shinju’s hands trembled as he raked them through his hair. He knew his father was right. He knew. If he left now, when tensions were already at their peak, it would be like throwing gasoline on a fire. The men were already questioning their orders. If they saw their commander abandoning them, it would confirm their worst fears.

But Jai.

His boy—his only son—was out there in a city that had been written off as lost. A city crawling with the infected.

Shinju’s breath hitched. His mind betrayed him, flashing to an image of Jai as a kid, chasing after his boots, laughing, tugging on his uniform, ”Daddy, I wanna be a soldier too!”

Now that same kid was fighting to survive in a wasteland.

”I can’t just sit here,” Shinju whispered, voice raw.

”I’m not telling you to sit here,” Kailin said, more gently this time. ”Send your best men. Send the ones you trust with your life. You trained them, did you not?”

Shinju’s jaw tightened.

The old man placed a firm hand on his shoulder. ”And trust me, my grandson is no weakling.”

Shinju closed his eyes briefly, trying to rein in his emotions. His father was right—Jai wasn’t weak. He had trained alongside the best, learned under the toughest hands. He wasn’t just a spoiled heir; he was a fighter.

Exhaling, Shinju finally nodded.

”Team Alpha,” he ordered, voice stronger now, more composed. ”Prepare for immediate departure.”
