The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

”Rin.”

The voice came from the other side of the sealed door.

It was not loud, yet the sound passed through the chamber as though the walls had been made of paper. The silver thread around the book tightened. Every page trembled, and the ink spelling KAELITH began to bleed into the paper.

Rin could not move.

He knew that voice.

Not from his life on Earth, nor from the memories preserved beneath the sanctuary. He knew it from another existence, from the story he had read before everything changed.

Kaelith.

The demon king. The man who had spent lifetimes searching for someone who never returned.

Except this was not the voice Rin remembered from Betrayal. That voice had been described as cold and merciless, a ruler whose name made entire kingdoms tremble.

This voice sounded exhausted.

As though the speaker had crossed an impossible distance and discovered that the person he sought was standing on the other side of a door he could not open.

”Rin,” it repeated. ”Please.”

Eryndor looked at him.

”Who is that?”

Rin forced himself to breathe.

”I don’t know.”

The lie tasted bitter.

Eryndor’s expression tightened, but he did not challenge it. Instead, he moved toward the door and examined the silver lines spreading across its surface.

”Someone knows your name,” he said. ”And you look as though you’ve seen a ghost.”

”Maybe I have.”

”Is that supposed to reassure me?”

”No.”

”Good. I would have found it unconvincing.”

Despite everything, Rin almost smiled.

Then the voice outside spoke again.

”They have shown you the name.”

The book snapped shut.

”They have shown you the record. But they have not shown you what they took from us.”

Rin stepped toward the door.

Inside his mind, Aelion spoke with sudden urgency.

Do not answer him.

Why?

Because the World is using his voice to reach you.

Rin stopped.

Is it really Kaelith?

Aelion fell silent.

That silence told Rin more than an answer would have.

The voice beyond the door softened.

”I know you’re frightened.”

Rin closed his eyes.

”I know you don’t remember me,” Kaelith continued. ”You never do, at first.”

The words struck him harder than any threat could have.

”You have nothing to forgive yourself for,” the voice said. ”Whatever they told you, whatever they made you believe, you did not abandon me.”

Rin’s hands curled into fists.

The story he remembered had never explained why Kaelith became the monster the world feared. It had offered fragments: a lost lover, a broken promise, a summoning ritual that should never have existed.

But those fragments had belonged to a fictional character.

This voice sounded as if it had been waiting through an eternity of silence.

Eryndor turned away from the door.

”Rin, look at me.”

Rin did.

”Whatever is outside, it knows how to make you hesitate,” Eryndor said. ”That doesn’t mean we should let it decide what we do.”

”I know.”

”Do you?”

Rin had no answer.

Eryndor’s gaze dropped to the book.

”Perhaps the record can tell us whether he’s lying.”

He reached for it.

The silver thread immediately wound around his wrist.

Eryndor recoiled, but the thread did not tighten. Instead, it glowed, revealing a line of tiny characters beneath his skin.

He stared at them.

”What is this?”

Rin caught his hand.

The characters were ancient, but their meaning came to him with unsettling clarity.

THE SECOND BEARER MUST NOT WITNESS THE FIRST REUNION.

Eryndor read the inscription aloud.

”The second bearer?”

The chamber shook.

Aelion’s voice echoed inside Rin’s mind.

We have to leave. Now.

The door behind them vanished.

The walls folded inward, transforming the circular chamber into a narrow passage lined with mirrors. Each mirror reflected a different version of the room.

In one, Rin stood alone.

In another, Eryndor wore a crown of black branches.

In a third, a dark-haired man knelt before a shattered altar, his head bowed over an empty pair of hands.

Kaelith.

Rin approached the mirror.

The man lifted his head.

Their eyes met.

For a heartbeat, the reflection did not move.

Then Kaelith pressed his palm against the glass.

Rin raised his own hand without thinking.

The mirror cracked between their fingers.

A sharp pulse of light swept through the passage, and the reflection disappeared.

Rin stumbled backward.

Eryndor caught him before he fell.

”That’s enough,” Eryndor said. ”We’re leaving this place.”

”But the record—”

”Can wait.”

”The answer might be here.”

”And if the answer is trying to trap you, then finding it won’t help us.”

Rin looked at him.

Eryndor’s expression was stubborn, frightened, and entirely sincere.

It reminded Rin that the boy beside him was not merely a name in an ancient covenant. He was someone who had chosen to keep walking despite having every reason to turn back.

”All right,” Rin said.

They ran down the passage.

The mirrors shattered one by one behind them, releasing fragments of voices that called their names. Some begged. Others warned. One laughed in a voice so similar to Aelion’s that Rin nearly stopped.

He kept running.

At the end of the passage, a staircase descended into a chamber filled with pale blue light.

They reached the bottom and found themselves standing before a vast wall covered in thousands of small, square compartments.

Each compartment contained a glowing crystal.

Some shone brightly. Others were dark.

A figure stood before the wall, dressed in a long robe the color of ash. Unlike the keeper of the library, this person had no crown, no silver veil, and no visible sign of authority.

They simply watched the crystals.

”You are late,” the figure said.

Rin slowed.

”Who are you?”

”The archivist of unfinished lives.”

Eryndor glanced at the wall. ”What are these?”

”Lives the World has not yet decided how to end.”

The archivist touched a dark crystal.

It flickered.

For an instant, Rin saw a young woman standing in a field of white flowers, looking toward someone beyond the edge of the image.

Then the crystal went dark again.

”Why bring us here?” Rin asked.

”I did not bring you.”

The archivist turned toward him.

”You followed the record. The record led you to the name. The name awakened the one who has been searching for you.”

”Kaelith.”

The archivist’s expression changed.

”You should not say that name here.”

”Why?”

”Because names are doors in this place.”

As if answering the warning, the entire wall began to glow.

One crystal burned brighter than all the others.

Its light was black at the center, surrounded by a thin ring of silver.

The archivist stepped back.

”No,” they whispered.

Rin approached the crystal.

A name appeared across its surface.

KAELITH — MEMORY INCOMPLETE.

Beneath it, another line formed.

SUBJECT HAS RETAINED A MEMORY THAT THE WORLD FAILED TO ERASE.

The archivist turned sharply toward Rin.

”What did you do?”

”Nothing!”

”Impossible. That memory should have been destroyed before the first covenant.”

Rin stared at the crystal.

”What memory?”

The archivist hesitated.

Then the crystal displayed an image.

A garden beneath a darkening sky.

Aelion stood beside Eryndor, both of them younger than the figures Rin had seen in the sanctuary. Eryndor held a small white flower. Aelion watched him with an expression of quiet affection.

Beyond them, a third person stood beneath the trees.

A young man with dark hair.

Kaelith.

He was not wearing a crown. He carried no weapon. He looked like someone who had arrived at the wrong place and had not yet decided whether to leave.

Aelion turned toward him.

The image trembled.

Kaelith said something, but the crystal produced no sound.

Then Aelion reached for his hand.

The memory went dark.

Rin stared at the crystal, unable to speak.

The archivist’s voice was barely audible.

”That is the memory the World failed to erase.”

Eryndor stepped closer.

”Why was Kaelith there?”

The archivist did not answer.

Instead, they looked at Rin with sudden understanding.

”He was not searching for Aelion,” they said.

Rin’s heart pounded.

”Then who was he searching for?”

The archivist lowered their gaze.

”You.”

The crystal shattered.

A shock wave tore through the chamber. Every other crystal went dark, and the archivist was thrown against the wall.

Rin grabbed Eryndor’s arm as the floor tilted beneath them.

From somewhere above, the library bell rang three times.

Then a voice filled the chamber.

Not the World.

Not the keeper.

Kaelith.

”I remember now.”

The black crystal fragments rose into the air, forming a doorway in the center of the room.

Beyond it stood a man dressed in dark robes, his long hair falling over one shoulder. His eyes were fixed on Rin with a look of disbelief so profound that it seemed to have emptied every other emotion from his face.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he took one step forward.

The doorway resisted him.

Silver chains appeared around his wrists.

Kaelith did not look at them.

He looked only at Rin.

”I remember the first time you came to me,” he said. ”And I remember what happened when the World took you away.”

His voice broke on the final word.

Rin could not find the strength to speak.

Kaelith pressed one hand against the invisible barrier.

”I won’t ask you to remember me,” he whispered. ”I only need you to know one thing.”

The silver chains tightened.

The doorway began to close.

Kaelith’s gaze sharpened with desperate urgency.

”You were never the person I was meant to lose.”

The light collapsed.

The doorway vanished.

And in the sudden darkness, Aelion finally confessed the truth Rin had been dreading.

Kaelith was the one who asked me to bring you here.

Rin stood frozen.

Why?

Aelion’s answer came like a verdict.

Because in the first timeline, you were the only person who could save him.

A pause.

And in every timeline since, he has been the one trying to save you.
