The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

The faceless figure stood at the edge of the golden mist.

Its white robes moved despite the absence of wind, their hems drifting over the polished floor without making a sound. Pale eyes watched Rin and Eryndor from a face that had no other features.

”Now,” the figure said, ”we shall see which of you was truly meant to survive.”

Rin instinctively stepped in front of Eryndor.

He did not know why he had done it. Perhaps it was the expressionless face, the strange pressure filling the chamber, or the memory of Aelion agreeing to sacrifice his future. Whatever the reason, Rin could not bear the thought of Eryndor standing alone before another being who spoke as if his life belonged to someone else.

Behind him, Eryndor caught his sleeve.

”Don’t.”

Rin glanced back.

Eryndor’s face was pale, but his eyes remained fixed on the stranger. The black mark on his hand had begun to glow beneath his sleeve. Its light was faint at first, no brighter than an ember beneath ash, yet it grew stronger with every passing moment.

”You don’t know what that thing is,” Eryndor whispered. ”Don’t approach it.”

”I’m not planning to.”

It was a lie. Rin was already considering how to reach the figure if it attacked.

The stranger tilted its head.

”How touching. Even now, you insist on standing between him and the consequences of your choices.”

Rin felt the words strike somewhere deep inside him.

Your choices.

Aelion had made a bargain with the Gods. One life would be saved, and one future surrendered. Rin had watched the memory unfold, had seen Aelion accept a price he could not fully understand.

But the memory had not revealed everything.

”What do you want?” Rin demanded.

”To witness the result.”

”Of what?”

”An agreement that should never have been made.”

The golden mist stirred. Beneath their feet, the polished floor became transparent, revealing a vast darkness below. Countless thin threads of light stretched through it, crossing and intertwining like paths through an endless forest.

Some glowed gold.

Others were silver, white, or a deep, unnatural black.

The figure raised one hand.

Two threads rose from the darkness.

One shone with a warm golden light. The other was nearly black, with a thin silver glow running through its center.

Rin recognized the second thread immediately.

It was connected to Eryndor’s mark.

The golden thread, however, made his chest tighten.

He had seen that light before—in the memories of Aelion, in the strange moments when the voice inside his mind became almost unbearably quiet, and in the reflection that had shown his own face with Aelion’s golden eyes.

The two threads twisted around each other.

Then the golden one began to break.

A sharp crack echoed through the chamber.

Eryndor flinched.

”What was that?”

Rin looked at the threads. ”I don’t know.”

The answer tasted bitter. He had come to this place hoping to find the truth, but every answer seemed to open another door behind which waited something worse.

The figure lowered its hand.

”The first thread represents the future surrendered. The second represents the life purchased with it.”

Eryndor stared at the black thread.

”My life?”

”Yes.”

His fingers tightened around Rin’s sleeve.

”And the other?”

”The future that was taken from Aelion.”

Silence fell.

Rin could hear Eryndor breathing beside him. He wanted to turn around, to tell him that none of this was his fault, that no one should have been forced to choose between a person they loved and their own future.

But Eryndor was already looking at him.

”Aelion,” he said quietly, ”what did you promise them?”

Rin’s throat tightened.

Eryndor believed he was Aelion. He had believed it since the beginning, and Rin had no way to explain the truth without destroying the fragile trust that had carried them this far. He could not tell Eryndor that he was someone else, someone who had awakened inside Aelion’s body with memories of another life.

Nor could he explain the voice that sometimes spoke inside his mind.

So Rin did the only thing he could.

”I don’t remember everything,” he answered carefully. ”But I’m going to find out.”

Eryndor studied him. There was fear in his eyes, but also something more painful: the fear that the person he trusted had already made a decision he could never undo.

”You keep saying that.”

”Because it’s true.”

”Then why does every answer make things worse?”

Rin had no reply.

The faceless figure watched their exchange with apparent satisfaction.

”Ask him about the garden,” it said.

Eryndor went still.

”What garden?”

”The place where you asked whether you could leave House Valen with him.”

The golden mist shivered.

A small garden appeared around them, replacing the chamber for a heartbeat. Rin saw an old stone bench beneath a flowering tree. Two boys sat beside each other, their shoulders touching, a half-eaten piece of bread resting between them.

One boy had golden eyes and a careless smile.

The other had dark hair and a black mark hidden beneath his sleeve.

Young Aelion held out the remaining bread.

”You can have it,” he said.

”You said you were hungry.”

”I changed my mind.”

”You’re a terrible liar.”

”And you’re ungrateful.”

The boy with the black mark laughed.

Rin’s heart ached at the sound.

He had seen this memory before, but never from this angle. This time, he noticed the way young Aelion watched the other boy after pretending not to care. He noticed how Eryndor leaned closer without realizing it, how their hands almost touched before both boys looked away.

The scene shifted.

The garden was empty now. Only Aelion remained beneath the tree, older by several years. Eryndor stood before him, uncertain and hopeful.

”If you leave House Valen,” Eryndor asked, ”can I come with you?”

Aelion smiled.

”Of course.”

”You haven’t even thought about it.”

”I don’t need to.”

”What if your family refuses?”

”Then I’ll refuse them back.”

Eryndor lowered his head, trying to hide his smile.

The memory faded.

Rin stood once more in the golden chamber, his heart beating painfully against his ribs.

The figure’s voice cut through the silence.

”That was the future he surrendered.”

Eryndor’s expression changed.

”No.”

”He chose to save you. In exchange, the Gods severed the path that would have allowed you to remain at his side.”

”No,” Eryndor repeated, more fiercely this time. ”That isn’t a future. It’s a possibility.”

”A possibility he wanted.”

Eryndor released Rin’s sleeve.

For a moment, Rin thought he might retreat. Instead, Eryndor stepped toward the figure, his glowing mark exposed.

”You speak as if you were there,” Eryndor said. ”Were you?”

The figure did not answer immediately.

”I witnessed the bargain.”

”Then you know he didn’t agree to lose me.”

”He agreed to surrender his future.”

”To save my life!”

”And you believe that makes the bargain just?”

Eryndor faltered.

The figure moved closer. Its robes slid over the floor, and the golden mist parted before it.

”Tell me, Eryndor. If you had known the price, would you have accepted it?”

Eryndor’s mouth opened, but no answer came.

Rin wanted to intervene. He wanted to tell the figure to stop, to leave Eryndor alone. Yet he knew that a simple denial would change nothing. The stranger was not merely asking questions. It was forcing Eryndor to confront the possibility that his survival had cost Aelion everything he might have become.

At last, Eryndor spoke.

”I would have told him not to do it.”

”Even if refusing meant your death?”

”Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

The golden mist stopped moving.

Eryndor looked down at the black mark on his hand.

”I never asked him to save me at that price. I never asked him to bargain with the Gods. If he did it because he thought my life mattered more than his future, then he was wrong about one thing.”

His voice trembled, but he did not look away.

”My life was never worth more than his.”

Something inside Rin broke.

He thought of Kaelith—not the terrible king others feared, but the man whose absence had followed him through every strange revelation. He remembered the ache of missing someone he could barely reach, the loneliness of knowing that every answer seemed to place another wall between them.

He understood, suddenly, why Aelion’s bargain frightened him so much.

It was not simply that Aelion had sacrificed his future.

It was that someone had convinced him love required a sacrifice of that magnitude.

A voice stirred inside Rin’s mind.

He believed there was no other way.

Aelion.

The voice sounded distant, strained, as if it had been forced to speak through a wall of stone.

Rin closed his eyes briefly.

You knew about the bargain?

There was a long silence.

I remember making it. I don’t remember everything that came before.

Then help me understand.

I wanted him to live.

The words carried a grief so old that Rin felt it as his own.

I thought that if I surrendered my future, the Gods would leave him alone. I thought they would take what I offered and let him choose the rest.

Rin swallowed.

But they didn’t.

No.

Aelion’s voice became quieter.

They took more than I understood.

Rin opened his eyes.

Eryndor was watching him with concern.

”Aelion?”

Rin realized he had been standing silently for too long.

”I’m listening,” he said, disguising his answer as a response to Eryndor rather than to the voice in his mind.

Eryndor frowned. ”To what?”

Rin glanced toward the stranger.

”To what it says.”

It was not entirely a lie.

The figure raised both hands.

The threads beneath the floor began to move. Hundreds of golden paths rose from the darkness, each showing a different version of the same world.

In one, Aelion stood before a great hall while Eryndor waited behind him.

In another, the two walked along a country road, their clothes dusty from travel.

In another, they stood beneath a sky filled with stars, speaking quietly as the world slept around them.

Then each vision disappeared.

The threads snapped one by one.

Eryndor stared in horror.

”What are you doing?”

”Showing you what was lost.”

”Stop!”

His shout shook the chamber.

The figure lowered its hands, but the threads continued breaking.

”You mistake me for the one who made the bargain,” it said. ”I did not choose what Aelion surrendered. I merely remember what the Gods intended to erase.”

”Then why show us?”

”Because the bargain was incomplete.”

Rin’s stomach tightened.

”What does that mean?”

”The Gods accepted his future as payment. They did not promise that the consequences would end there.”

The golden thread shuddered.

A thin fracture appeared along its length, spreading like ice cracking across a frozen lake.

”The bargain saved Eryndor’s life,” the figure continued. ”But the severed future did not disappear. It became a wound in the order of the world. Every memory connected to that future became a threat to the agreement.”

Rin remembered the city beneath the sanctuary, the memory crystal, and the woman who had spoken as if she had known Aelion long before the world had begun to forget him.

”The city,” he whispered.

The figure turned its pale eyes toward him.

”Yes. The City of First Light preserved what the World tried to erase.”

Eryndor looked between them.

”Then the city remembers what happened to us?”

”It remembers fragments.”

”Can we see the rest?”

”That depends on what you are willing to lose.”

Eryndor’s face hardened.

”Nothing else.”

The figure’s head tilted.

”Then you will learn nothing.”

Rin stepped forward.

”Enough with the riddles. You brought us here. You showed us these memories. Tell us what you want from us.”

The stranger looked at him for a long moment.

”You speak as though you have the right to demand answers.”

”I have the right to refuse your game.”

”Do you?”

The floor vanished.

Rin’s stomach lurched as the chamber dissolved beneath his feet. Golden mist rushed upward, wrapping around his legs, his waist, and his chest. He reached for Eryndor, catching his hand just as the darkness opened beneath them.

Eryndor gripped him tightly.

For one terrifying instant, Rin thought they were falling into the same endless void that had swallowed them before.

Then the world stopped.

They stood on opposite sides of a narrow bridge suspended over darkness.

A pale light shone at the far end. Beyond it waited a door made of white stone, covered in lines of ancient writing.

The faceless figure stood before the door.

Between Rin and Eryndor, the bridge began to crack.

”Choose,” the figure said.

Eryndor stared at the widening gap.

”Choose what?”

”One of you may cross. The other must remain.”

Rin’s blood ran cold.

”No.”

”The door will reveal the truth behind the bargain. Only one may enter.”

”Then open another door.”

”There is none.”

”I’m not leaving him here.”

The figure’s pale eyes remained fixed on Rin.

”You speak as though this choice belongs to you.”

The bridge cracked again.

Eryndor staggered as a piece of stone broke away beneath his foot. Rin lunged forward and caught his wrist. The sudden movement nearly dragged them both toward the edge.

”Hold on!” Rin shouted.

Eryndor’s free hand caught the bridge.

For several seconds, neither dared move.

Then Eryndor pulled himself upright, still gripping Rin’s wrist.

His gaze moved from the broken bridge to the door.

”Aelion,” he said quietly, ”if this is another test, we don’t have to obey it.”

Rin stared at him.

Eryndor believed that the person standing before him was Aelion. He had no reason to doubt it. He could not hear the voice inside Rin’s mind, could not know that Rin was struggling to keep two identities from colliding within a body that did not originally belong to him.

Yet his words reached Rin with unexpected force.

”We don’t have to obey it,” Eryndor repeated. ”Whatever the Gods wanted, whatever they wrote into our lives, we can refuse.”

Rin tightened his grip on Eryndor’s hand.

”Together.”

The word escaped before he could think about it.

Eryndor gave him a small, exhausted smile.

”Together.”

The bridge cracked from end to end.

The white door opened.

Beyond it, Rin saw a vast room filled with shattered mirrors. In every reflection, Aelion stood alone beneath a different sky. Some versions were young. Others were older. In several, his golden eyes were empty. In one, he knelt before a figure hidden beneath white robes.

And in the deepest mirror, Aelion stood before the Gods, his hands trembling as he accepted the bargain.

Behind him stood Eryndor, reaching for him.

But Aelion could not turn around.

A wall of light separated them.

Rin heard Aelion’s voice inside his mind.

That was the moment I lost him.

The bridge trembled beneath Rin’s feet.

Not when I made the bargain, Aelion continued. Not when the Gods took my future. It was when I believed saving him meant I had to let them decide what happened afterward.

Rin looked toward Eryndor.

Eryndor was still holding his hand.

The figure watched them from the open doorway.

”You have found the beginning of the truth,” it said. ”But beginnings are not answers.”

”What happens if we refuse to choose?” Rin demanded.

The stranger’s pale eyes narrowed.

”Then the chamber will decide for you.”

The bridge broke apart.

Rin and Eryndor fell together, their hands still locked between them.

As darkness swallowed the white door, Rin heard Aelion’s voice one last time.

Don’t let them make the same choice again.

Then the voice disappeared.

And somewhere far beneath the City of First Light, something ancient began to wake.
