The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

The silver light released them without warning.

Rin stumbled onto a stone floor, catching himself with both hands. Beside him, Eryndor landed on one knee, his free hand pressed against the black mark on his wrist.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

The silence felt different from the quiet beneath the forgotten city. There was no distant whisper, no ancient mechanism turning somewhere beyond their sight. This place was utterly still, as though sound itself had been forbidden to enter.

Rin slowly raised his head. They stood in the middle of a circular platform suspended above a bottomless expanse. Thin silver lines crossed the floor, forming a pattern of interlocking circles. At the center lay a shallow pool filled with perfectly clear water.

Above them hung a sky without stars. Eryndor rose and looked back. There was no door behind them. Only empty space.

”Wonderful,” he muttered. ”Another place with no obvious exit.”

”Perhaps the exit is somewhere else.”

”Your optimism is beginning to concern me.”

”I’m trying to be encouraging.”

”Try being useful.”

Rin gave him an offended look. ”I just survived falling through a wall of light.”

”And yet you still have the energy to argue.”

”That proves I’m fine.”

”No. It proves you’re irritating.”

For one brief moment, the familiar bickering eased the tension between them. Then the pool rippled. Neither had touched it. A thin silver thread rose from the water and stretched toward Eryndor’s wrist. His black mark answered with a sudden pulse of light.

Rin moved closer.

”Don’t touch it.”

”I wasn’t going to.”

”You were leaning toward it.”

”I was looking.”

”Look from farther away.”

Eryndor sighed, but he stepped back. The thread remained suspended between them, trembling like a string pulled taut. Then a voice emerged from the pool.

”Bearer.”

Rin went still. The voice was neither male nor female. It sounded distant, yet every syllable seemed to come from inside his bones.

”Your debt remains unpaid.”

Eryndor’s expression hardened. ”What debt?”

The water darkened. Images appeared across its surface: the garden beneath the sanctuary, the seven chairs, the child whose face resembled Eryndor’s. Then came the memory of a young man kneeling before the Gods, offering his name in exchange for another person’s life.

Rin recognized the scene. The first covenant. But this time, the memory continued.

After the Gods accepted the sacrifice, the young man stood alone beneath a white tree. His name had disappeared from the world. The faces of those who had once known him blurred whenever they tried to remember.

He looked down at his empty hands. Then he turned toward the child he had saved. The child was crying.

The young man reached for him, but his fingers passed through the child’s shoulder like mist. The image shattered. Eryndor stared into the pool.

”He saved someone,” he said quietly. ”And the price was that nobody could remember him.”

”Not nobody,” Rin answered.

Eryndor glanced at him. Rin looked away before the boy could notice the fear in his expression. Somewhere inside him, Aelion stirred.

The covenant was never meant to work this way.

Rin kept his face still.

Then tell me how it was supposed to work.

The Gods promised to preserve the life that was saved. They never promised to erase the person who saved it.

So they changed the terms?

They changed the meaning.

The bitterness in Aelion’s voice made Rin’s chest tighten. Before he could respond, the silver thread snapped. A shock wave swept across the platform. The pool rose in a twisting column, and the images vanished beneath a flood of white light.

A figure emerged from the water. It wore a long robe that moved like smoke. Its face remained hidden behind a smooth silver veil, but its hands were unmistakably human.

Eryndor stepped in front of Rin.

”Who are you?”

The figure tilted its head.

”I am the witness to the first covenant.”

”Then you know what happened.”

”I remember what was permitted to remain.”

”That isn’t an answer.”

”No,” the figure agreed. ”It is the only answer this place allows.”

Rin studied the silver veil.

”What do you want from us?”

The figure turned toward him.

”From you, nothing.”

Its attention returned to Eryndor.

”From him, everything.”

The black mark on Eryndor’s wrist flared. He clenched his fist, but the light slipped between his fingers.

”I’m tired of people telling me what I owe,” he said. ”The Gods chose me. The covenant chose me. The World keeps dragging me into memories I never asked to see. If there is a debt, tell me what it is and let me decide whether I’ll pay it.”

The witness remained silent for a long moment. Then it bowed.

”You have learned to ask the question the first bearer never asked.”

”What question?”

”Whether the sacrifice was yours to make.”

The platform trembled.

Far below, something enormous began to move. Rin felt the vibration through the soles of his boots. The silver lines beneath them shifted, rearranging themselves into a symbol he had seen on the doors beneath the city.

Two interlocking circles. One broken. One whole. The witness raised its hands.

”The World has awakened,” it said. ”It has begun to restore the sequence of events it once erased. When the restoration is complete, every choice that contradicted its design will be removed.”

Rin’s mouth went dry.

”Removed how?”

”By making it as though those choices never occurred.”

Eryndor’s hand tightened around Rin’s sleeve.

”And what happens to the people who made them?”

”They will be returned to the places assigned to them.”

”That sounds suspiciously like a threat.”

”It is a warning.”

”Then warn us properly.”

For the first time, the witness seemed almost amused.

”Very well. The World does not fear your death, Eryndor. It fears your freedom.”

The boy’s expression changed. Rin understood why. For the first time since they had entered the sanctuary, someone had acknowledged that Eryndor was more than a vessel for an ancient curse. More than a name on a door. More than the surviving half of a bargain made before he could understand it.

He was a person who could choose and the World had built its entire design around preventing that choice. The witness turned toward the empty sky.

”There is one memory the World cannot restore without destroying the foundation of its own creation. That memory was sealed beyond the first covenant, where even the Gods could not reach it.”

”Where?” Rin asked.

The witness pointed down. The platform split along its silver lines. Beneath the stone lay a staircase descending into darkness.

At its entrance stood a small white marker. Unlike the other inscriptions they had encountered, its words were written in a language Rin recognized from Earth.

Not the language of the book. Not the language of this world. His own.

THE ORIGINAL RECORD.

Rin stopped breathing for a moment. He knew those letters.

He knew the shape of them, the familiar arrangement of their strokes. He had seen the same writing on printed pages, screens, signs, and the book that had changed his life.

”How is that possible?” he whispered.

Eryndor leaned closer to the marker.

”Can you read it?”

Rin forced himself to nod.

”What does it say?”

He hesitated. The witness answered for him.

”It records the moment the World was given its purpose.”

”And who gave it that purpose?” Rin asked.

The figure’s veil reflected the silver lines beneath their feet.

”Someone who believed that preserving a world was more important than preserving the truth.”

Aelion’s voice rose sharply inside Rin’s mind.

We must leave.

Rin stiffened.

Why?

Because I know what lies below.

The witness looked directly at Rin, as if it had heard the silent exchange.

”Your companion remembers,” it said. ”But memory is not the same as understanding. You must see the record yourself.”

Rin swallowed.

”What if we refuse?”

”Then the World will continue its restoration without you.”

”And if we go down?”

”You will discover why the first bearer sacrificed his name, why Eryndor survived, and why the World has begun searching for you.”

Eryndor looked at Rin.

”We’ve come this far.”

Rin wanted to tell him that this was different. That the strange writing, the voice in his mind, and the witness’s attention all pointed toward something far more dangerous than another memory.

But Eryndor was already moving toward the stairs. Rin followed. At the first step, the witness spoke once more.

”Remember this, returned soul. The World may alter history, but it cannot create a choice that was never made.”

Rin looked back.

”Then what can it do?”

The silver veil turned toward him.

”It can make you forget that you ever had one.”

The witness dissolved into the pool. Behind Rin, the platform sealed itself, leaving no path back. He descended beside Eryndor into the darkness, while Aelion remained silent in the depths of his mind.

At the bottom of the staircase, a narrow chamber waited. Its walls were covered in pages.

Thousands upon thousands of them, layered from floor to ceiling. Some were blank. Others contained names, dates, and descriptions of events Rin had never heard of. At the far end stood a black table, and upon it rested a single open book.

Its cover bore no title. Only a familiar symbol. The same mark that had appeared on Rin’s hand. Eryndor approached the table, drawn toward it as if by an invisible thread.

Rin caught sight of the first line on the open page.

Before the World existed, there was a promise.

The next line appeared as he watched.

Before the promise, there was a man who refused to let another life be decided for him.

Then the ink began to move. Letters gathered into a name. A name Rin had spent this entire journey trying to understand.

AELION.

Beneath it, a second name appeared.

ERYNDOR.

And beneath both, written in the language of Rin’s old world, the final line slowly formed.

THE WORLD WAS CREATED TO KEEP THEM APART.

The chamber shook. Eryndor reached for the book. Rin grabbed his wrist.

”Wait.”

But the page had already turned by itself. A new sentence appeared.

THE RETURNED SOUL WAS NEVER PART OF THE ORIGINAL COVENANT.

The words blurred. Then one final line emerged, dark as spilled ink.

HE WAS THE REASON IT HAD TO BE REWRITTEN.
