The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

The final sentence remained on the page.

HE WAS THE REASON IT HAD TO BE REWRITTEN.

Rin stared at the words until they seemed to burn themselves into his vision.

He had crossed worlds, fallen through forgotten sanctuaries, and watched memories that belonged to someone else. Every revelation had brought him closer to Aelion, yet somehow farther from understanding why he was here.

Now the original record claimed that the World had been rewritten because of him.

Not because of Eryndor.

Not because of the first bearer.

Because of Rin.

”Tell me you can explain this,” he whispered.

Eryndor was still holding the edge of the table. ”I was about to ask you the same thing.”

Rin forced himself to look away from the book. ”I don’t think we should touch anything else.”

”You said that before we entered the chamber.”

”And I was right then, too.”

”Yet here we are.”

”Unfortunately.”

Eryndor almost smiled, but his attention returned to the page.

”Why does it call you the returned soul?”

Rin’s heart lurched.

He had no answer that would not expose the secret he had guarded since awakening in Aelion’s body. Eryndor believed he was speaking to the person whose name appeared in the ancient records. He had no reason to suspect that someone else stood behind those familiar eyes.

”I think it refers to the person who came back after the World erased him,” Rin said carefully.

”Then Aelion?”

”Possibly.”

It was the safest answer he could give.

Inside his mind, Aelion remained silent.

Rin’s frustration sharpened. You could help me here.

Nothing.

You know what this means. You told me the World was listening, and now it has written my existence into its original record. How much longer are you going to keep quiet?

The silence stretched.

Then Aelion answered.

I don’t know why you were written into the covenant.

Rin froze.

For once, there was no bitterness in the voice. No guarded refusal, no attempt to redirect the conversation.

Only uncertainty.

But I know who wrote the first version.

Who?

Me.

Rin’s fingers curled against his palms.

Before he could ask another question, the book slammed shut.

Every page in the chamber turned at once.

The sound was like a thousand wings beating in the dark.

Eryndor stepped away from the table. ”What did you do?”

”Nothing!”

The walls began to change.

Names vanished from the hanging pages, leaving pale spaces where the ink had been. Dates rearranged themselves. Events were crossed out and rewritten before Rin could read them.

At the center of the chamber, a new inscription appeared above the book.

THE ORIGINAL RECORD HAS BEEN ACCESSED.

A second line formed.

UNAUTHORIZED MEMORY DETECTED.

Then a third.

CORRECTION WILL BEGIN.

The floor shook.

Rin seized Eryndor’s hand. ”We need to get out.”

”Where?”

”Anywhere that isn’t here!”

A narrow doorway opened in the far wall. Beyond it, a corridor flickered between existence and emptiness.

They ran.

Behind them, the chamber collapsed inward, not into rubble but into blankness. The walls lost their shape. The pages disappeared. Even the black table dissolved as though it had never been built.

Rin glanced back once.

The open book lay alone in the fading chamber.

Its cover lifted.

One final page rose from within, turning toward him.

Written across it was a sentence that made his steps falter.

AELION DID NOT CREATE THE WORLD. HE CREATED THE POSSIBILITY OF ITS FAILURE.

Then the chamber vanished.

Rin and Eryndor plunged through the doorway as the corridor sealed behind them.

They landed on a narrow bridge suspended over a vast, colorless sea.

For a while, neither moved.

Rin lay on his back, staring at the empty sky. Eryndor sat beside him, breathing hard, his hand still locked around Rin’s.

”Next time,” Eryndor said between breaths, ”you choose the direction.”

”Next time, we’re staying somewhere with ordinary doors.”

”You seem to attract extraordinary ones.”

”I assure you, it’s not intentional.”

”That’s what worries me.”

Rin sat up.

The bridge stretched in both directions, ending in mist. Far beneath it, the sea was perfectly still. No waves moved across its surface, and no reflection appeared beneath the bridge.

Yet something was written in the water.

Rin leaned over the edge.

Names.

Thousands of them, drifting beneath the surface like leaves trapped beneath ice.

Some were complete. Others had been reduced to a single letter. Many were so faint that they vanished whenever he tried to focus on them.

At the center of the sea, one name remained clear.

AELION.

Beside it was another.

RIN LEE.

Rin jerked backward.

Eryndor caught his shoulder. ”What did you see?”

”Nothing.”

”Rin.”

The name escaped Rin before he could stop it.

Eryndor stared at him.

For one terrifying instant, Rin thought he had revealed too much.

But Eryndor’s gaze had shifted toward the water.

”Is that your name?” he asked.

Rin hesitated.

”Yes.”

The word sounded strange spoken aloud in this world, where everyone called him Aelion.

Eryndor looked back at him. ”Then why does the record call you the returned soul?”

”I don’t know.”

This time, it was the truth.

Eryndor studied him, searching his face for something he could not identify.

”You have been keeping things from me.”

Rin’s stomach tightened.

”I know.”

”Are you going to tell me what they are?”

”Not yet.”

Eryndor released his shoulder.

Rin wished he could take the answer back. He wanted to explain everything: the voice, the memories, the fact that he was not the person Eryndor thought he was.

But every time he considered telling the truth, he remembered Aelion’s warning.

The World was listening.

And if the original record could be rewritten, Rin could not be certain what revealing his identity would cost.

Eryndor rose.

”Fine,” he said. ”But when the time comes, don’t decide for me what I can handle.”

Rin looked up at him.

The words struck too close to the heart of the covenant.

Aelion had surrendered his future to save Eryndor. The Gods had taken that sacrifice and turned it into a chain. The World had erased the person who dared to question its design.

And now Eryndor was standing before Rin, asking not to be protected through another lie.

”I won’t,” Rin promised.

The bridge trembled beneath their feet.

A distant bell rang once.

At the opposite end of the bridge, a figure appeared in the mist.

It was a woman dressed in pale blue robes, with long silver hair and a crown made of interlocking rings. Her eyes were covered by a strip of white cloth.

She walked toward them without making a sound.

Eryndor immediately moved in front of Rin.

The woman stopped several paces away.

”So,” she said, ”the record has finally recognized the name it was ordered to forget.”

Rin stood.

”Who are you?”

”I was the keeper of the first archive.”

”Were you one of the Gods?”

”No.”

The woman tilted her head toward the sea.

”I was the person who preserved the pages after they decided to destroy them.”

Rin glanced at the names beneath the water.

”You saved these people?”

”I saved their names. Whether that saved them is another question.”

”Why is mine here?”

The woman turned toward him.

”Because you were never supposed to enter this history.”

Rin felt cold spread through his chest.

”I know that already.”

”No,” she replied. ”You know you came from another world. You do not know why the boundary opened for you.”

Inside his mind, Aelion stirred.

Ask her who opened it.

Rin swallowed.

”Who opened the boundary?”

The woman’s expression changed.

For the first time, she seemed afraid.

”The person who created the possibility of the World failing,” she said. ”Aelion.”

Rin’s pulse quickened.

”But if Aelion did that, why would he bring me here?”

”He didn’t bring you here.”

The woman raised one hand.

The mist parted behind her, revealing a towering structure at the far end of the sea. It resembled a library, but its shelves extended upward beyond sight, and its windows were filled with moving stars.

At its entrance stood a single black door.

No name was written upon it.

”The World brought you here,” the woman continued. ”It searched every possible future for someone who could enter the original record without being bound by its rules. Someone whose existence began outside the history it controls.”

Rin stared at her.

”You mean me.”

”Yes.”

”But why would the World bring someone here who could make it fail?”

”Because it believed you would repair what Aelion broke.”

”And if I don’t?”

The woman’s voice grew quiet.

”Then the World will try to erase you before you discover what he actually did.”

The sea stirred beneath the bridge.

For the first time, the thousands of names began to rise toward the surface.

Eryndor took Rin’s hand again.

”Whatever happens,” he said, ”we face it together.”

Rin squeezed his fingers.

Ahead, the black door opened.

A golden light spilled across the bridge, illuminating the path to the impossible library.

From somewhere inside, a voice called out.

Not Aelion’s.

Not the keeper’s.

A voice Rin recognized from the deepest part of his own memories.

His mother’s.

”Rin,” it said gently. ”You’ve taken so long to come home.”

Rin stopped breathing.

He had not heard that voice since his life on Earth.

And before he could take a single step toward it, Aelion finally spoke inside his mind.

Do not enter that library.

For the first time, Rin heard something worse than fear in Aelion’s voice.

Recognition.

That’s where the World keeps the people it has already erased.
