The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

The staircase ended at a door that had no handle.

Rin stopped in front of it, studying the smooth black surface. Unlike the other doors beneath the City of First Light, this one bore no names, no symbols, and no inscriptions. It seemed less like an entrance and more like a piece of darkness cut out of the world.

Behind him, Eryndor rubbed the mark on his palm.

”Do you think this is where we’ll find the first bearer?”

”I hope so.”

”You sound as if you expect something worse.”

”I’ve learned not to trust places that hide their doors.”

Eryndor gave a tired laugh. ”That’s the first sensible thing you’ve said since we entered this city.”

Rin turned toward him. ”You keep saying that.”

”Because you keep doing things that make me question your judgment.”

”I’m beginning to think you enjoy criticizing me.”

”Only when you deserve it.”

Their brief exchange eased the tension, but only for a moment. The air near the door had grown colder, and Rin could feel a faint vibration passing through the stone beneath his feet.

He raised his hand.

Before his fingers touched the surface, a voice spoke inside his mind.

Don’t open it.

Rin froze.

Aelion’s voice had been quiet since the chamber of the first covenant. Now it sounded almost frightened.

Why?

Because I remember what is behind it.

Rin’s heart quickened.

You said you couldn’t remember the first bearer’s face.

I couldn’t.

Then what do you remember?

A pause followed.

His last words.

Rin glanced at Eryndor. The boy was watching him closely, waiting for him to explain his sudden stillness.

Rin lowered his hand.

”What is it?” Eryndor asked.

”I’m thinking.”

”About the door?”

”About whether we should open it.”

Eryndor folded his arms. ”We’ve come this far. Unless you have another staircase you’d prefer to explore, I suggest we continue.”

Rin almost told him that the voice inside his mind had warned him not to proceed. Instead, he looked at the door again.

Aelion might be afraid because the memory behind it would reveal something terrible. Or perhaps he feared discovering that his own choices had caused more suffering than he remembered.

Either way, Rin couldn’t turn back.

”We open it together,” he said.

Eryndor nodded.

Rin placed his palm against the door.

The surface softened beneath his touch.

Black ripples spread outward, and a thin silver line appeared down the center. The door divided silently, revealing a room filled with pale flowers.

Rin stared.

He had expected another chamber of mirrors, perhaps a prison or an altar. Instead, a garden stretched before him beneath a sky filled with motionless stars.

White flowers covered the ground. Their petals glowed faintly, illuminating a narrow path that led toward a small stone house. A stream ran beside the path, its water clear enough to reveal countless tiny lights moving beneath the surface.

Eryndor stepped through the doorway.

”It’s beautiful.”

Rin followed, though he couldn’t shake the feeling that the garden was waiting for them.

At the center of the path stood a young man in white robes.

He looked almost exactly like the figure from the pool.

His hair was tied behind his neck, and his face carried the quiet exhaustion of someone who had spent too long carrying a burden alone. There was no mark on his skin.

He turned as they approached.

”You’re late,” he said.

Eryndor stopped.

”Who are you?”

The young man smiled faintly.

”That depends on what you remember.”

”I don’t remember you.”

”Of course you don’t.”

His gaze shifted to Rin.

For a moment, his expression changed. Recognition crossed his face, followed by something resembling sorrow.

”You brought him here again.”

Rin’s stomach tightened.

”Again?”

The young man didn’t answer. Instead, he looked toward the stone house.

”Come inside. The truth is easier to explain when you’re sitting down.”

Eryndor hesitated.

Rin caught his sleeve before he could follow.

”What if this is another test?”

Eryndor glanced at the young man.

”Then I suppose we’ll have to pass it.”

”You’re remarkably calm about this.”

”I’m not calm. I’m tired.”

That, Rin understood perfectly.

They followed the young man to the house.

Inside, the room was simple. A wooden table stood beside a window, and three chairs had been arranged around it. A small lamp burned without oil, casting warm light across the walls.

On a shelf rested a collection of old books.

Rin recognized the symbol carved into their spines.

The mark of the covenant.

The young man noticed his gaze.

”Those records contain the earliest agreements between the Gods and the World.”

”Why are they here?” Rin asked.

”Because the World could erase the events, but it couldn’t erase every record of them.”

Eryndor sat slowly.

”Who are you?”

The young man remained standing.

”My name was once written in the first covenant. It was removed when the World decided I had never existed.”

”Then what was your name?”

The young man looked down at his hands.

”Eryndor.”

The room became utterly silent.

Rin stared at him.

Beside him, Eryndor rose so abruptly that his chair scraped across the floor.

”No.”

The young man lifted his eyes.

”I know.”

”No,” Eryndor repeated. ”My name is Eryndor.”

”Yes.”

”Then you cannot be me.”

The young man didn’t argue.

Instead, he reached toward the shelf and took down a small book. Its cover was cracked, and the pages had yellowed with age.

He placed it on the table.

”Names are not always as simple as people believe.”

Eryndor didn’t sit again.

”Explain.”

The young man opened the book.

On the first page were two symbols: a black circle and a golden line.

”Before the World established the laws that govern this existence, there were countless possible futures. Some overlapped. Others contradicted one another. The Gods tried to preserve them all, but the contradictions threatened to destroy the boundaries between worlds.”

Rin listened carefully.

He had heard fragments of this history before, but never from someone who seemed to remember what had existed before the World imposed its order.

”The Gods needed a system,” the young man continued. ”A way to decide which possibilities would survive and which would be erased.”

”The World,” Rin said.

The young man nodded.

”The World was created to preserve existence. It was never intended to decide what existence should mean.”

Eryndor’s expression hardened.

”And you were the first bearer?”

”I was the first person who agreed to carry a contradiction the World could not accept.”

He turned another page.

A drawing showed two children standing beneath a flowering tree. One had golden eyes. The other held a small black stone in his palm.

Rin recognized the scene from the earlier memories.

”Aelion,” he whispered.

The young man looked at him sharply.

”You remember him.”

Rin realized his mistake and lowered his gaze.

”I’ve seen his memories.”

It was a careful answer. It revealed nothing about the voice inside his mind.

The young man studied him for a moment, then continued.

”Aelion was not the first person to challenge the World. But he was the first to understand that its laws could be questioned.”

”Why did he make the bargain?” Eryndor asked.

”Because he believed he could save someone without surrendering the right to choose.”

The young man closed the book.

”He was wrong about the price. But he wasn’t wrong about what mattered.”

Rin leaned forward.

”Who was the child you saved?”

The young man’s face grew distant.

”He was the person the World had already decided to erase.”

”Why?”

”Because his existence threatened a future the World needed to preserve.”

Eryndor looked down at his marked hand.

”Was the child me?”

The young man was silent.

For a long moment, Rin thought he would refuse to answer.

Then he said, ”Not the Eryndor standing here.”

Eryndor’s face went pale.

”What does that mean?”

”It means that before this world settled into its current shape, there was another future. In that future, you were born under different circumstances. You were not chosen by the Gods in the way you were later told. You were simply a child who wanted to stay beside someone you loved.”

The room seemed to grow colder.

Rin thought of the mirror that had shown a different version of Eryndor, older and exhausted, accusing Aelion of taking away his freedom.

”Did Aelion know?” he asked.

”He learned the truth too late.”

The young man returned the book to the shelf.

”The World had already marked that future for erasure. Aelion tried to save the person he loved, and I offered myself as the first bearer. I believed the covenant would preserve the child without destroying the future he might have chosen.”

”And it didn’t,” Rin said.

”No. The World accepted the sacrifice, but it preserved only what its laws permitted. The child survived in one form. The future in which he could freely choose Aelion was severed.”

Eryndor’s hands curled into fists.

”So Aelion lost me.”

”He lost the future he imagined with you.”

”That’s the same thing.”

”No,” the young man replied gently. ”It isn’t. A future can be taken away without erasing the person who might have lived it. That is the cruelty of this covenant. It allows the World to claim that nothing has been lost because the people remain alive.”

Eryndor looked away.

Rin understood why the distinction mattered. Aelion had survived, and Eryndor had survived. Yet both had been left with a wound neither could explain.

The World had preserved their lives while removing the choice that gave those lives meaning.

Rin turned toward the young man.

”Why did the World erase you?”

”Because I remembered the original covenant.”

”That’s all?”

”I remembered who created it, what it was meant to protect, and the promise the Gods made before the World existed.”

Rin felt his heartbeat quicken.

”Who created the World?”

The young man looked toward the window.

”The person who feared that no one would ever stop the cycle of sacrifice.”

Before Rin could ask another question, the lamp flickered.

The garden outside began to fade.

White flowers turned gray, their petals dissolving into silver dust. The stream stopped flowing. Beyond the window, the stars vanished one by one.

The young man’s expression changed.

”It’s found us.”

Eryndor stepped toward the window.

”Who?”

”The World.”

A deep vibration passed through the house.

The books on the shelf fell open. Their pages turned rapidly, revealing the same sentence repeated in different ancient scripts.

THE FIRST BEARER MUST NOT BE REMEMBERED.

The young man seized Rin’s wrist.

”Listen carefully. You cannot let the World complete the erasure again.”

”What do we do?”

”Find the original covenant. Not the copy preserved in the city. The original.”

”Where is it?”

The young man looked at Eryndor.

”Inside the person who remembers the first sacrifice.”

Eryndor stepped back.

”No. You said you were the first bearer.”

”I was.”

”Then why do you look at me as though I’m the one carrying it?”

The young man released Rin.

”Because the World erased my name, but it could not erase the choice I made. The covenant survived inside the person I saved.”

He reached toward Eryndor’s marked hand.

”The first sacrifice was never meant to become a curse. The World turned it into one because it feared what would happen if the bearer learned the truth.”

Eryndor stared at him.

”What truth?”

The young man’s eyes filled with sorrow.

”That you were never the price.”

The house shook violently.

A crack appeared in the ceiling, revealing a darkness far deeper than the garden outside.

The young man stepped away from them.

”Go.”

Rin grabbed his arm.

”Come with us!”

”I can’t.”

”Why not?”

”Because I am the memory the World has come to erase.”

The crack widened.

The young man’s white robes began to dissolve at the edges, breaking into tiny fragments of light.

Eryndor reached for him.

”Wait! If you are me, then tell me what happened!”

The young man smiled sadly.

”I have told you what matters.”

”No, you haven’t!”

”I know.”

For a moment, the two of them stood facing each other—one bearing the name the World had erased, the other carrying the name it had allowed to remain.

Then the young man touched Eryndor’s palm.

The black mark flashed white.

A memory passed between them.

A child beneath a flowering tree.

A promise made in secret.

Aelion kneeling before the Gods.

And a voice speaking from beyond the boundaries of the world.

If one life must be surrendered, let it be mine.

Eryndor staggered.

Rin caught him as the house collapsed around them.

The young man vanished into a storm of silver light.

His final words followed them into the darkness.

”Remember, Eryndor. The World did not erase me because I failed.”

The garden disappeared.

”The World erased me because I remembered that it could be wrong.”

And somewhere beyond time, the World opened its eyes.
