Ms. Diviner: The Prodigal Daughter's Return

”Senior Qu, didn’t you just say that my destiny was good?” Mu Huaidong simply couldn’t swallow his indignation and questioned Qu Shanling.

”Your destiny is indeed good, but his is even better. Yours is the destiny of a mortal destined for wealth and prominence, yet his is entrusted by the stars above. If triumphant, he could be an emperor, a general, or the richest under heaven. If defeated, he could be a chaotic hero, remembered eternally. Excellent, excellent indeed. I’ve studied the Star Divination Technique for nearly a hundred years, and through my hands, face and bone reading have predicted life and death for no less than ten thousand, if not eight thousand souls. Yet such a good destiny is but my first encounter, truly remarkable. Such a fate should exist only in the heavens. How many times could it be found in the human world...” The old god-man, grabbing Mu Nan’s hand and shaking it, was spitting so much that it almost flew onto his face.

...

Mu Huaidong’s face was certainly dark with fury, and Mu Nan too had a head full of black lines.

Those oxen at the household of Qu the God surely had the most bitter and arduous lives, frequently flying through the heavens, indeed not an easy feat.

He had already heard from Mu Hanyan that this old man’s head of white hair was all dyed, and the wrinkles were ironed on, his actual age merely in his forties. Now, quite accidentally, he has been studying the Star Divination Technique for nearly a hundred years, and he has performed face and bone reading on no less than ten thousand, if not eight thousand. He could really blow his own trumpet.

The Third Elder’s expression was somewhat strange. He had already completely lost hope in Mu Nan, but now that Qu Shanling valued him so highly, he was suddenly uncertain how to proceed.

”Master Qu, please take a seat first. Let’s eat while we talk,” said the Third Elder to Qu Shanling, as the servants began to serve dishes one after another.

The Third Elder took the seat of honor, with Master Qu as the guest of honor. Although Mu Huaidong had been pronounced by him to have an inferior destiny compared to Mu Nan, as the Changsun he still held his position until the heir of this branch was confirmed, so he too sat alongside them. The other brothers and sisters sat at a separate table to accompany them.

The fathers of Mu Nan and of Mu Huaidong were managing the family business in other regions, so these younger generations had taken their places.

”You are called Mu Nan, right? Come and join us.” Qu Shanling was now scheming to ingratiate himself with Mu Nan. Although Mu Hanyan had already promised to help him, promises after all carry no weight, and having one more person to speak for him was always beneficial.

”Mu Nan is still young, and merely the sixth child of the family. How could he have the qualification to share a table with Senior Qu?” Mu Huaidong, already harboring resentment towards Mu Nan, now put on the airs of an elder son and grandchild.

”Being young, he will eventually grow up, won’t he? And it doesn’t matter if he’s lower in the order of birth. He is entrusted by the stars, with a destiny so remarkable even I envy it profoundly. This lad will achieve extraordinary success, and I, too, wish to get close to him before he has come of age, to benefit from some of his fortune. We Star Divination Masters observe the Heavenly Secret, and cannot avoid divine retribution. If I could gain some luck through him, it might resolve some of the divine punishments in the future.” Qu Shanling’s intention to have Mu Nan come over was nothing more than to curry favor with him, but seeing Mu Huaidong harboring resentment, his heart was displeased, and his words were even more blunt—practically dismissing him completely.

”Hmph, achieves extraordinary success? You wouldn’t say that if you knew what he had done. If you did know, you probably wouldn’t even want to glance at him again, let alone cling to his good luck. More likely, you’d attract bad luck,” retorted Mu Huaidong, unable to hold back his scorn.

If not for the covert deal just made with Qu Shanling before, Mu Huaidong might have believed his words, but after some subtle maneuvering between the two, he had already understood what kind of character this old god-man was. How could he possibly believe his nonsense about being entrusted by the stars?
