Ms. Diviner: The Prodigal Daughter's Return

Chapter 46: 46 I’ll explain, but I won’t listen

And when Mu Cheng learned that Fourth Miss Zhao had fallen prey to Mu Hanyan’s scheming and had been humiliated in public, he rushed to the Zhao Residence.

”Mu Cheng, how dare you come to see me? You plotted with Mu Hanyan against me, haven’t you caused me enough harm?” As soon as she saw Mu Cheng, Fourth Miss Zhao was furious. She grabbed the teacup beside her and hurled it at him. At this moment, she couldn’t care less about maintaining a fragile image; all she wanted to do was tear Mu Hanyan and Mu Cheng to pieces.

”What? Me and Mu Hanyan conspiring against you? Impossible! It’s not like that, you’ve misunderstood me. Listen to me, let me explain,” Mu Cheng said, startled, hastily dodging the projectile.

He was completely unaware of the course of events, and of course, he didn’t know that Fourth Miss Zhao had been duped precisely because of a letter written by Mu Hanyan, mimicking his handwriting.

”I won’t listen! Misunderstanding? How dare you talk about misunderstanding! If it weren’t for that letter you supposedly wrote yourself, how would I have fallen for Mu Hanyan’s trick, how would I have gone to the rendezvous? It’s all your fault,” Fourth Miss Zhao raged, cursing vehemently. She grabbed several more teacups and flung them at him. Remembering the shame she had suffered that day, there was no way she could calm down.

”What letter?” Mu Cheng was stunned and forgot to dodge, getting hit in the forehead by a teacup, causing blood to spurt out immediately.

”Still trying to deny it? I’ll kill you, you heartless, ungrateful bastard,” Fourth Miss Zhao found a target for her fury, continuing to scream angrily.

”You’ve really misunderstood me. When did I ever write such a letter? Besides, don’t you know how much I loathe Mu Hanyan? I’d rather see him suffer than plot with him against you,” Mu Cheng said anxiously, not even bothering to wipe the blood from his forehead as he tried to explain to Fourth Miss Zhao.

Fourth Miss Mu stopped in the act of grabbing a teacup, pausing abruptly. She too was blinded by her anger, lashing out at anyone from the Mu family, overlooking the fact that according to what she knew of Mu Cheng, he would never conspire with Mu Hanyan.

”Are you saying that I accused you wrongly?” Although Fourth Miss Zhao realized she had wronged him, she still pretended to be doubtful as she asked. She had plenty of tricks for dealing with men—when to speak gently, when to act spoiled and capricious, when to retreat strategically—she had mastered these arts.

”If anyone isn’t clear about my feelings for you, how could you not understand them? If you really don’t trust me, kill me right now. I won’t harbor a single complaint,” Mu Cheng said, feeling a rush of exasperation upon hearing Fourth Miss Zhao’s skeptical tone. He almost wished he could die on the spot to prove his innocence.

Oh, it seemed that in this world, proving one’s innocence was usually a woman’s concern, but to drive Mu Cheng to such a state showed how skilled Fourth Miss Zhao was at manipulating emotions. With just a few words, she had him this worked up.

”Mu Cheng, I think I may have really wronged you, I am sorry. You won’t be mad at me, right?” Fourth Miss Zhao looked pitifully at Mu Cheng, her eyes misty, her delicate and frail appearance made Mu Cheng’s heart flutter.

Mu Cheng’s eyes reddened, nearly moved to tears. With the preceding anger and sadness as a backdrop, his feelings were even more intense. At this point, asking him to bash his head to death, he probably wouldn’t hit it a second time.

”Ah, it’s my head that was clouded by anger, that made me lose my reason and blame you. I’m sorry, it’s all my fault, all of it. Will you please not be angry with me? It’s all my doing,” Fourth Miss Zhao said, looking woeful once more. Her tearful countenance almost broke Mu Cheng’s heart.
