Mr. CEO, You Look Strangely Familiar

Charlotte Young seemed to have anticipated this question. ”Once I kill you, the elevator will ascend rapidly. I just need to get out on the third floor and take the stairs down.”

Nora Ainsworth shook her head. ”I have a feeling someone is trying to kill two birds with one stone. You might never get out of this elevator.”

Charlotte Young didn’t believe her. ”Cut the crap, Nora Ainsworth. Honestly, you should be content. You captured the heart that I’d die for but could never have. His heart belongs only to you, yet you don’t cherish it. You just trample all over it. Nora Ainsworth, I’m going to kill you today. I failed to lure you somewhere else last time, but tonight, there’s no escape!”

With that, her index finger tightened on the trigger. The bullet was ready to fly. The slightest move and Nora Ainsworth would be dead, no question about it!

”But everyone knows you went to the restroom with me.”

”Stop struggling. No one will believe you,” she argued confidently.

Nora Ainsworth stared at her, her expression calm. Inwardly, however, she was anything but. She still had so much to do. She couldn’t die here.

”Charlotte Young, there’s a kind of love that means letting go. It’s not too late for you to stop. Don’t do something you’ll regret.”

She tightened her grip on the pistol. ”You’re right. I won’t do anything I’ll regret. Time to die, Nora Ainsworth.”

Nora Ainsworth’s hands were pressed tightly against the elevator wall. She stared at Charlotte Young. Just as the bullet was about to be fired, the elevator suddenly lurched, and Charlotte Young stumbled.

Just then, the elevator doors opened without warning.

Charlotte Young immediately hid the gun on her person.

The attempt had failed.

She shot Nora Ainsworth a vicious glare and muttered, ”You got lucky!”

The elevator had stopped at the second floor again. Just as the people outside were about to step in, she shifted and said to them, ”Don’t come in yet. Let me get out first.”

Nora Ainsworth stood there, watching as Charlotte Young put one leg out of the elevator. In the blink of an eye, the doors slammed shut like a guillotine, closing with incredible speed. Then, in front of everyone, Charlotte Young’s body was caught between the closing elevator doors.

It shot rapidly upward.

”AHHHHHH!!!!” Her terrified scream was cut short before it could even continue.

A shocking stream of bright red blood slowly flowed from the seam between the doors, a horrifying sight.

The elevator seemed to have lost control, shooting up and then plummeting down, over and over. Charlotte Young, caught in its grasp, died instantly, her blood splattering everywhere.

Nora Ainsworth’s white evening gown was spattered with blood.

She stood there, having witnessed the entire elevator horror firsthand.

The elevator doors were still moving up and down. Despite her professional training, Nora Ainsworth was still shaken to the core, watching as Charlotte Young’s trapped body was dragged relentlessly up and down, down and up, before her very eyes.

With a CREAK, the elevator stopped at the second-floor entrance.

It slowly opened again. Charlotte Young’s body went limp. Her neck had been crushed.

Her eyes were wide with terror, even in death, as if she could never rest in peace.

Her lips were parted, as if she had been in the middle of saying something.

Screams erupted from the people by the entrance, and a large crowd swarmed the doorway.

Everyone had witnessed this accident, so it was clear at a glance that Nora Ainsworth had not planned it.

Quentin Grant, Ethan Ellsworth, Catherine Callahan, and all of The Grants appeared at the entrance.

They looked at Nora Ainsworth standing inside.

Quentin Grant’s heart, which had been lodged in his throat, finally settled.

A few minutes later, the police arrived and quickly put up a cordon. After questioning the crowd, they learned that this was an accidental death caused by a malfunctioning elevator.

But everyone knew deep down that it might not have been an accident. They all had their doubts.

Everyone could testify that when they saw Charlotte Young, she seemed fine and had even told them she was coming out first.

This incident had nothing to do with Nora Ainsworth.

The police contacted Charlotte Young’s family and asked them to come to the scene. Meanwhile, people were calling for Nora Ainsworth to come out.

She stood there, motionless.

’No one could know the regret in my heart. The moment Charlotte Young was caught by the elevator, I had already realized it: this was a plot to kill two birds with one stone.’

’I could also guess who was behind it.’

’It was just a shame. Charlotte Young’s death was too gruesome.’

’She failed to kill me, and in the end, sent herself to the guillotine.’

’The ’kill two birds with one stone’ plan was probably this: have Charlotte Young secretly kill me in the elevator, then stage an elevator accident in front of everyone. They’d find the gun on Charlotte’s body, and the whole matter would be quietly dropped.’

’But,’ Nora thought, ’Catherine Callahan probably never expected that Charlotte Young would fail to kill me and get herself killed instead.’

Countless media outlets could only wait outside the Grant Residence, getting only a rough idea of the situation inside.

Next, after Charlotte Young’s body was photographed and the scene was investigated, the police had the corpse taken away. From beginning to end, Nora Ainsworth’s gaze remained fixed on Catherine Callahan at the doorway, never wavering.

The blood at the scene was cleaned up.

Her legs had grown numb and weak from standing.

Quentin Grant came forward, stepped into the elevator, and grabbed her hand.

Nora Ainsworth’s legs gave out, and she nearly collapsed.

Quentin Grant supported her by the shoulders and led her out of the elevator.

The party guests had all left.

In the Grant family’s main living room, Master Grant was raging.

Master Grant, Mrs. Grant, and the three Grant brothers and their wives were all present.

”I must find out whose dereliction of duty this was! Whoever is responsible must be severely punished! I will absolutely not tolerate anything that damages the Grant Family’s reputation! Furthermore, we must express our condolences to the Young Family and ensure the compensation reaches her parents.”

Mr. Grant nodded. ”Taking care of the aftermath is essential.”

Mrs. Grant said sheepishly, ”What’s done is done. We shouldn’t publicize this. Just handle it quietly.”

Master Grant clearly disagreed with his daughter-in-law. ”An incident like this, witnessed by so many people... how can we possibly keep people from talking? We must express our condolences to the Young Family. Our entire family will go tomorrow. That will show our sincerity. Also, the guest elevator is supposed to have a security camera, but suddenly it doesn’t. Not to mention, the elevator was installed just a few years ago. Something like this shouldn’t happen unless it was deliberate. I will get to the bottom of this matter.”

Hearing this, Mrs. Grant didn’t dare say anything more.

At this moment, Second Grant had a question. ”Father, we’re all a little confused. Celebrating the birthday of that Cassandra Callahan, a woman of unknown identity, here at the Grant Estate... Was this Mrs. Grant’s idea?”

Master Grant clearly didn’t want to discuss the topic. ”It doesn’t matter whose idea it was. An incident has occurred. Let’s focus on dealing with the aftermath first.”

Grant picked up where she left off, her expression flippant and her words bitingly sharp, cutting straight to the point. ”Father is right. We don’t even get to use the Grant Estate for our own birthdays, yet tonight we’re throwing a party for a complete stranger. Could this woman be Eldest Brother’s illegitimate daughter?”
