Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 412: Chapter 412: The Remarried Widow 5

Yuan Chun carried a basket full of goat grass on her back, with another large bundle tied with a rope in her hand.

This bundle of goat grass weighed as much as two full baskets. This morning alone, Yuan Chun earned six work points, making the scorer envious, ”Sister Yuan Chun, you’re amazing! You’ve picked so much pig grass in just one morning, and it’s so fresh and good. Where did you gather it?”

Yuan Chun sighed and forced a bitter smile, ”Such good pig grass, where else can it be found but in the deep mountains? Now I’m working alone, with five mouths to feed. If I don’t risk my life, my children will starve to death.”

The scorer, upon hearing this, looked anxious and advised, ”Sister Yuan Chun, how could you dare venture into the deep mountains? What if you encounter wild boars or wolves? That’s a matter of life and death. If something were to happen to you, your four children would become orphans. How would they survive then? Sister Yuan Chun, you shouldn’t go into the deep mountains anymore. Don’t risk your life just to earn a few more work points. Although your family is struggling right now, who isn’t? It’s just a matter of enduring these years. Once Da Qiang and Erqiang grow up, things will get easier for you. Please, don’t go into the deep mountains anymore, think more about your children.”

Hmm, the scorer is a good girl.

She’s the brigade leader’s youngest daughter.

A very kind girl, she treats everyone well and is a good person, but good people don’t live long.

In the previous life, this girl Lingling drowned in the river while saving a child from the same village. She never made it back out.

The brigade leader’s wife went mad.

The brigade leader’s hair turned white overnight, and he fell seriously ill.

That incident is supposed to happen in about three days.

Seeing how much this girl cares for her, she decided she would save her when the time comes.

After all, it’s a human life, and such a good girl at that. It’s such a pity for her life to end tragically.

By saving Lingling, she could also gain a connection with the brigade leader’s family. If the brigade leader shows her some favor when distributing work, it would make life easier. Although she possesses a superpower, which makes her fearless, life in the village would be simpler with a strong ally. At least with the brigade leader as support, no one in the village would dare to trouble her and her orphaned children.

”I understand, from now on I will only stay on the edge of the deep mountains and not venture inside.” After dumping the goat grass, Yuan Chun picked up her empty basket and shouldered it again, throwing the rope into the basket as well.

When she reached the doorway, Yuan Chun secretly tossed more than a dozen fist-sized potatoes into the basket.

At noon, she and her children boiled potatoes and ate them with a bit of sugar.

The sweet taste was enjoyed by the children, who ate with great delight.

After lunch, Yuan Chun went to buy fifty eggs from a few familiar aunties in the village, and then she went to the village chief’s house to order thirty chicks.

”Yuan Chun, raising so many chicks will need a lot of feed. People can’t even get enough to eat nowadays. Using grain to feed chickens—what if someone goes hungry? Why don’t you raise fewer, I’ll reserve sixteen for you?”

”Third Aunt, my Da Qiang said he would go to the mountains every day to dig wild vegetables and catch bugs to feed the chickens, so there’s no need to use grain. Third Aunt, please go ahead and reserve thirty for me.”

Yuan Chun insisted, so the village chief’s wife didn’t try to persuade her further.

When Yuan Chun was leaving, the village chief’s wife also gave her a small jar of pickled radish, ”I suppose you’ve run out of pickles at home. Take this jar to eat, and return the jar to me once it’s empty.”

”Thank you, Third Aunt.”

”What’s there to thank? It’s just a bit of pickles, not something precious.”

Third Aunt paused, then asked, ”You’re out of grain at home too, right? It’s just the beginning of spring, every household is short of grain. I still have some sweet potatoes in the cellar, let me get you a few to cook for the kids.”

Third Aunt quickly went to her cellar, brought out more than a dozen sweet potatoes larger than a fist, and said, ”Alright, take them with you. You can return the basket tomorrow.”
